Energy efficiency is one such area where the economic return on investment could be substantial, creating thousands of jobs and supporting new and existing businesses while saving people money that can be reinvested locally.

Yes, coal powered plants are reaching the end of usefulness and mining needs to stop "from education and workforce training to community health and small business support"
A great example of change is The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail,

"Efforts to build a foundation to transition the Appalachian economy must focus on a broad set of initiatives ranging from education and workforce training to community health and small business support, and there are examples in every corner of the region.

But there are economic opportunities that can be developed over the short-term that will have an immediate economic impact with significant benefits for local economies. Energy efficiency is one such area where the economic return on investment could be substantial, creating thousands of jobs and supporting new and existing businesses while saving people money that can be reinvested locally."

While Big Coal and Big Oil live better than any king while we pay their taxes for them, the fact is that they're keeping us in the Stone Age. I am convinced that biodegradable fuel could be developed, but it's not being researched and produced because the Biggies would have one hell of a fit if they found out they'd be toppled off their thrones. How much do you want to bet that they have hit men backstage? Well, something had better be done because they're playing with our heads big time as they lower and raise the price of fuels. It'll go higher and higher while our ability to pay their prices go lower and lower. Monsters that they are.

They should use what is available to them for power. Coal is cheaper and readily available then use it. Moving into the energy needs of the future are not going to be met by technological progress alone.. Right now the oil coal and natural gas are good for 200 years or more but not enough for the other advances. Newer designs are coming on line and it will take time. Fusion is the current holy grail and is the game changer. Everything is leading to that breakthrough.

The cynical part of me says that the powers that be will resist change to the bitter end, and I hope they have a bitter end.

Noted & posted and yes Anna the PTBs will resist any change that negatively affects their balance sheets.I agree with you in principle Scott. Clean coal technology will greatly reduce the emissions but not altogether. I've been through Appalachia and it is the aftermath of mining just like fracking that is the big problem. The poisonous byproducts from all mining and fracking operations are never maintained properly or cleaned up to a satisfactory level. These companies are prevaricators of the first water and lying to the public and denying any responsibility is SOP. Scalar wave is the way to go. Tesla proved it works and his schemata and technology are being held in reserve until every last red cent and drop of resources has been squeezed by the robber barons from our planet. We are nothing more to them than disposable assets. That's part of austerity economics and disaster Corporatism.
