This is a very informative site that analyzes the actual operations/fund disbursements of hundreds of charities of all kinds. It can help you choose wisely when allocating your charitable contributions.

This site is GREAT -it offers non-partisan, non-judgmental facts on the financial structure of hundreds of different charities, enabling us to see where and how our donated dollars are spent. A must-bookmark for those who contribute to any kind of organization!

I have a hard time understanding how they rate a charity, like 4 stars for efficiency, but over all rating 2? I usually look at how much the top administrators receive. Most get a percentage of income, so large charities pay outrageous sums to their top people even though their performance may not be any better than someone running a small charity. This is a good rating site over all.

Cate i wish I was able to post more for I get so much info on corruption in every area of interest. I only donate to very few charatiies as I am disgusted that when I need or needed help I don't get any especially from agencies that offer free help to illegal immagrants and here I am a U.S. Citizen. I know personally that a freinds ex wife is an executive with the United Way in New York City and she makes over $300,000 a year not including the ritzy fundraisers she attends.

Great information here. Especially useful to me personally now that I am retired and have to make the hard decisions on how to alocate limited budget for charity. Thanks, Cate! I will alert all in my friends group--they have all turned into white boxes with little red Xs today!

Charity Navigator offers useful information about large nonprofit organizations (with total annual support of $500,000 or greater). For smaller organizations, and for the larger ones, too, I go to GuideStar, where a free online registration gives access to the federal tax filings of all nonprofit organizations except those, such as very small or religious organizations, that are not required to file.
