Another, but possibly temporary, victory for the environment. The ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will stop Dutch Shell's efforts for now, at least.

Let't keep working together for the preservation of fragile sites like this one, and keep hoping the courts see it our way.

Right on Cate!! But man can not help destroying anything. Seemingly man cannot leave the environment as it is ment to be...........
The other component to all this new land there are many countrie now who want to stake out territories for themselves.

Lord help us all and the sea creatures!!!!

PLANT LIFE........PLANT TREES...........

This is, indeed, wonderful news. Dutch/Shell is a huge conglomerate and mounted an expensive defense and used its enormous influence, yet they lost in the courts...at least for the time being. Because of what is at stake we can count on an ongoing battle behind closed doors. But for today, we should accept this blessing and celebrate it. Thank you for calling the story to our attention, Cate!

Thank You Cate, this is wonderful news for our enviornment. It is also wonderful news for me. This is an issue that I have worked on since January,2001. In fact I was supposed to be in DC from 9-08-01 until 9-12-01. At the last minute I couldn't make it. We all know what happened on 9/11. I have seen the video of the tundra and the pristine conditions and it would be ludicrious to disturb any of it.

Truly good news, but we can't let our guard down. These big businesses are after the almighty dollar, and they will do whatever it takes to achieve their goal.

When I win the lottery I want a Tesla....an electric car made in the Bay Area that goes from 0 - 60 in 4 seconds, goes 200 miles before having to be recharged and it's a sports car that looks something like a corvette. It's 100% electric. I'll be right back....gotta go buy a lotto ticket.....

For the sake of the whole Earth...I wish that they'd give up the drilling for oil. Let's hope that the Earth isn't like a peeled orange, once you stick your finger through the middle you can break it open and pull it apart by wedges. Is that what happened the last time there were major Earth changes and the landmass divided?

Great news! I live on the Pacific Coast and am so sick of see the drilling rigs out on the ocean and the OIL SLICKS CAUSED BY HUGE TANKERS DUMPING THEIR BILGES! If a pleasure boat were to do the same thing, they would be fined mega bucks....not EXXON or any of the others. Thanks for sharing Cate and thanks to my 9th Circuit!

Then where do we get the energy? Why are people still driving SUVs? Why are people still eating too much meat? Why does nobody do anything about growth and development?

For the record I drive a small car less than 6,000 miles, I eat less than eight ounces of meat a month, and I have no children and plan on one child and adoption.

To the 9th Circuit Court: Way to go!!!!

If we don't take care of Mother Earth, we're doomed, because there's no place else we can go! This is absolutely fantastic!

Shell's next step will be to try to get its case heard by the full court... I hope the justices stick to their guns!

As President, I will lead the way in protecting our oceans, rivers and rural environments. I will also lead in fighting for clean, affordable and accessible drinking water. I have worked hand-in-hand with the environmental movement on many battles, from thwarting a nuclear waste dump to boosting organics to demanding labels on genetically-engineered products. A clean environment, a sustainable economy, and an intact ozone layer are not luxuries, but necessities for our planet's future...Dennis Kucinich

It's encouraging and now to tackle those other profiteers with an eye on the Artic for commercial purposes,
and let's hope Shell ( I live in Holland) don't get a "pardon" in other courts. So far so good!!!

That's great news and proves we can move mountains. Now I wish we could get the same result in the rainforests. Here in Aus we have just had the APEC conference and our Prime Minister announced that he had done a deal with Indonesia including helping them to regrow their rainforests. A big joke - he is about to give the green light to Gunns to destroy the Tasmanian rainforests here if he hasn't already done so and they are pressing him too as the Federal Elections are almost overdue and they want the legislation passed before it's held. RAN please note.
