Wow. People... I too felt a chill when I read that article. It is unfamiliar to my lifestyle and makes me uncomfortable. I wholeheartedly agree that literacy and education is of paramount importance amongst women throughout the world. Without those things, there is little left to do but marry and become a mother for how else can she take care of herself? But I did expect a more candied response from my Care2 community. Just because we see things from a different light, doesn't make these people "bad, arrogant or stupid slobs". It offends me SO much that you would say that about our fellow brothers and sisters. It wasn't all that long ago that women in our own country faced a similar fate. This is merely a difference in culture... though the article states that the man receives $1700 a month in state aid (a mere $22 per person I might add), I am positive that his children (grown or otherwise) contribute to the well being of the entire family. How many of US can say that about our families? Don't get me wrong, I do believe that it may be an uncanny existence for the people... uneducated and un-wealthy... not to mention the overpopulation issue. But we will get NO WHERE (except perhaps where we already are) by being offensive about another's beliefs.... You can do better Care2.

Thank you, Heidi, for the salient points of your post. Noted, Cate. Just a cultural way of looking at the world is an example of why we cannot expect to have more than an uneasy coexistance. Neither of our cultures can begin to understand the other. Here, we believe in living together without marriage. Some of us marry, reproduce, divorce, again and again. This man is just staying married to all of his wives. I mean, there is only so much community property to divide and how do you pay child support for that many children? Of course, I am saying these last sentences tongue-in-cheek. We have to understand that repopulating their numbers is not a matter they take lightly--it is a mission possible.

Noted, and my thoughts, I can see all the merits of each opinion, now mine. In all the countries that have mutiple wives and many children, the reasoning is to have children to care for them in their declining years.
As in China and such, the families would rather have sons to support them, as girls are an expense that is beyond them, marriage doweries etc. So with that said, how do we match up now.

Heidi......I still think of these people as stated before. Whatever monies this over-populating nitwit get more than likely comes from excess in government funding. Can't prove it but some of that is our money since the U.S. hands money to Isreal left and right.............Whether true or not it still is extremely selfish to keep adding on children with how many wives and more added probably until his pencil's battery goes dead.
And wouldn't the Mormons be considered a culture if it is a matter of cultural beliefs alone?????????

In this day and age of trying to attain ZERO POPULATION it is a sin in my opinion!!!!!!!!!

My one and only comment is to those with the most sensible comment Heidi, Carolyn, and Lamargo. Perhaps sensible is not the only word for description. Nonpredjustice, compassion, and understanding might be just three more in the long line of respect, for a culture we know nothing about, except that it is very distant from our own. If these cultures do not rely on hate, or cruelity to exist, what business is it of mine.

Christian.........I assure you I do not think of all men in this way. But considering having a harem of women and an army of children smacks of shear ignorance, stupidity, arrogance in light of our world situation. It is as if this man must prove his manhood way beyond what I consider normal or even rational custom or no custom.

Some people in the UK are similar - they have lots of children and just expect the government to pay for them. It's disturbing that when me and my partner were nearly homeless I was told by government employees to get pregnant and then I'd get a house from the local council!!

People like this man are laughing their butts off at us who don't break the rule of common sense. Evidently he cares nothing about how these children will fare later on in life whether the world falls into crisis or not due to Global Warming..........
He is enjoying every moment in the dark and that is all that matters to him and them fallowing in his footsteps....
I'm the oldest of eleven and I made a vow as a child never would I spit out kids like a machine gun for no man, culture or no culture.

There are SIX BILLION people on this earth and half of them are children and half of that are starving and roaming any given city street begging for food, shelter, cloths and money..........

The sheer stupidity of it all turns me inside out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bette, I can appreciate your opinion for being your opinion and gladly accept and appreciate that you share it. You need to know that I am in complete agreement on the over population issue. It's not even an issue with me; it's fact. It is imperative that we take care to reduce the world’s population. I'm in favor of banning antibiotics, myself... along with the use of birth control and common sense, but that is another topic all together.

What I do know is this. If you and I were both invited to speak to this man, he would be more inclined to interact with the one who did not judge or berate him for being an "arrogant slob". Don't you agree? It is not my intention to preach to people about what I believe in, but to network with those who already agree. If we are going to bring change to the world, we need to get over the name calling and condemnation. It's rude, uncouth, childish and extremely frustrating for me to have to keep going over. Especially with those who I feel have intelligent insight and ideas when it comes to solving the problem; as I feel of you.

That said... and as I stated previously, I feel that the best way to make change is to provide education, not just for the girls/women, but for people in all situations. I'm not entirely positive what the statistics say about literacy in Bedouin communities but I'm sure it is not high. With even that small but essential tool, people are thus given the opportunity for making change of their own. If my tax dollars are going to Israel to provide assistance (including education), I have no complaints because it is the very least I can do. So, until I am positive that these people have been given EVERY resource available and still make the choice to continue over populating, I can not label them anything except a fellow being. And IF this case is one of an arrogant, self-indulgent man who cares not for anything but himself, I have better things to do than post hate-filled/anger-induced messages about it. That was my intention in my original post… let’s concentrate on fixing the problem, not pointing it out.

If the problem is not pointed out in any way defineable then we as intelligent thinking humans can not possibly help those who in their ignorance & selfishness will not be helped at all.
This man has gone beyond the damage point in his actions......And his selfish cloning of his own being is enough to make anyone mad...........I recall I'm human with common sense, this man has none that I can perceive.

The only thing which can be done now is to teach somehow someway his children not to mimic their fathers reproductive ways and tell them why and how it damages people, places far away from them.

The name calling I agree serves no purpose other than to espress the rage and audacity of what this man and thousand like him are doing all over the world!
You and I and Mother Earth are carrying the burden of these people who think self pro-creation is a living mirror of themselves to gloat over and pride of their hidden behavior that they know no one can stop.

General Relief was run that way in this country and then it changed it was not so drastic ,but I can remember
families having more kids to get more money. I was kind of young at the time and then I think good old Ronnie
cut out sum benefits. I know a lot of women had to go to school or training of some kind. This man he is a pig!
