Lisa, I am sure it was the spyware that caused your problem...I hope you ran a clean sweep using a spyware removal program such as AdAware or SpyDoctor to remove it.

What a SHAME!! I don't ever visit these websites but will encourage others not to. I think our forefathers should have included an amendment in the Constitution that states "In the year 2008 if human kind is still alive, there shall be no ivasion of privacy by companies who may advertise by way of futuristic measures that compute one's thoughts and private information." Thank you Cate, noted.

Noted! Thank Heavens I haven't visited these sites. Cate, thanks for the head's up. I fear this is only the beginning. We are heading on a collision course and if some changes aren't made quickly, we will be a fully facist country with no privacy at all. To tell the truth, I am not sure we have any now. It would not surprise me if I am on a no fly list somewhere since I have been very outspoken about this inept, arrogant, stubborn, greedy, dishonest, lying, administration for sometime now. Did I just do that again? LOL

If you're using a pc, Microsoft has installed spyware on your computer that tells them what software you are using, and what version so they can send you upgrades and advertising. They also keep track of where you go on the internet so you can be sent the correct advertising according to your interests which are reflected by where you go.....It is also on Mac OSX....none of us are immune, even with virus protection. It is in the operating systems we use. There is no escape from Microsoft.

You thought the government was spying on you? No. It's Microsoft. Maker of your computer system.

I truly believe the majority of companies the public deals with are doing the same as Sears..maybe to a lesser extent . No matter who you do business with anymore ..it seems like on your cash receipt or store paperwork they want you to fill out surveys on their store's service, accessibility of finding items etc...and to make it worth your time they'll be glad to enter your response for a chance to win a drawing..usually a cash amount. I attempted to do it once because I wasn't pleased with the store....minutes later you keep getting hit with pop ups, additional sales pitches by other companies and I realized this survey was causing more problems for me and my computer...ended up having to run the adware,AVG program. No information is sacred to them anymore and they'd sell all their customers souls to make a buck under the table......

Sears: Come see the softer side of spyware
By Jacqui Cheng | Published: January 02, 2008 - 05:15PM CT

Sears and Kmart are places you might go when you need a new air conditioner filter or a lawnmower; they're not generally thought of as havens for spyware. But that's what the two stores have become, at least online, where their web sites were found to be installing software to track users' every online move—all without their knowledge. Security researchers are now hammering Sears (the owner of both Sears.com and Kmart.com) for the move, despite Sears' claims that users were notified adequately beforehand.

The story goes like this: late last year, Sears.com and Kmart.com began asking users if they wanted to participate in a "community" online (presumably a community made up of Sears and Kmart aficionados). In late December, security researcher Benjamin Googins at Computer Associates noticed, however, that the "community" actually installed software from comScore, a market research firm, in order to track the web activities of the sites' visitors.

Googins stated on his company's blog that Sears had installed spyware which transmitted everything—"including banking logins, email, and all other forms of Internet usage"—to comScore for analysis. This was all allegedly done with no notice that anything was being installed, and it ran contrary to documentation about the community that said any data collected would stay within Sears' hands at all times.

But wait, there's more! In an update to his original post, Googins noted that Sears actually offers a slightly different privacy policy—via the same URL—to compromised computers versus those that have yet to install the software. "If you access that URL with a machine compromised by the Sears proxy software, you will get the policy with direct language (like 'monitors all Internet behavior'). If you access the policy using an uncompromised system, you will get the toned-down version (like 'provide superior service')," he wrote.

Surprisingly, Sears VP Rob Harles responded to Googins' original post, stating that the company "goes to great lengths to describe the tracking aspect." He claims that "clear notice" is provided to users multiple times throughout the sign-up process. The "community" continued on.

Now, spyware researcher Ben Edelman has taken a look at the situation, and he agrees with Googins' assessment. Edelman heavily scrutinized all documentation that came with signing up for the community and found a few mentions of tracking software buried deep within the tangled legalese (for example, one mention was on page 10 of a 54-page license document). This, he says, goes against regulations by the Federal Trade Commission that require clear, unavoidable disclosure and "express consent" from the user before installing such software.

The two vague disclosures that Edelman found both fail to meet the FTC's standards, he says, and he argues that Harles couldn't possibly be more incorrect in his assertions that Sears goes to great lengths—or any lengths at all—to inform users of what's going on.

The whole incident is reminiscent of another recent privacy blunder by Facebook, where its Beacon application tracked user activity elsewhere on the web and reported it back to the site for the world to see. The difference is that Facebook reacted relatively quickly to the community outrage (that is, the real, actual Facebook community, and not a nebulous term to describe being tracked by a retailer) and made significant changes to how Beacon interacted with the users it was tracking. The situation is still not perfect—the tool still tracks users' activity even if they choose not to have it displayed—but it puts Facebook light-years ahead of where Sears is right now. As of today, Sears' online community—complete with very detailed comScore tracking software—is still available online.

Awwww, geeeeee, it's "harmless", they JUST wanta track your spending habits so they can aim their ads and pop-ups & stuff directly at YOUR interests; it's for YOUR convenience, comfort and happiness, dontcha see! So you can be a BETTER CONSUMER OF CRAP!
And, besides, our benevolent govt would NEVER NEVER order them to turn over their Internet research stuff in their search for innocent people to label "terrorists"! Gee, YOU'd never order a "subversive" book on the Internet! So you're SAFE! This is just about those OTHER guys! Let the "terrorists" be worried!!!

I don't doubt for a second that LOTS & LOTS of other commercial sites will be spying (if they're not already), especially with more and more people shopping exclusively online. I know I did barely any in-store shopping this holiday season - all of it was purchased online. It's the future. I don't agree with the spying...but our lack of privacy is definitely something we should be fighting to save in 2008!

Noted. Info as to whether you bank on line, order from any type of catakigl pay your bills on line, whatever you surf the net to find--it is already part of your profile. Certain specific transaction details are of course, protected. Rest is fair game.

Have a little fun. Go to Google. Type in your name. You may see specific petitions you signed listed and lots of interesting things!

Thanks Cate and thanks to all of our friends at Microsoft for making it possible for us to be spyed on by anyone who will subscribe to the service they offer commercial and non-commercial sites.

Set your computer (and anti spyware and anti virus and anti malware and firewall programs) to block cookies except where you need them for a site to function.

Use something like the Free Internet Window Washer which can be found here:
http://www.eusing.com/Window_Washer/Window_Washer.htm
to clean up cookies and browser history etc.

There are programs such as "Active Ports" that tell you everywhere your computer is connected to and trying to connect to.

Learn how your computer works and how all those programs I mentioned work.

Don't store passwords, etc on your computer, don't online bank unless you have to and let companies that pull this on us know they lost your business. Call corporate headquarters and your local store and write the media.

If you secured your computer as well as you do your house or your car, you wouldn't have to worry about spyware and crap. I use a USB flash drive for all of my surfing needs, it's set to read only and I can use it on any computer without leaving tracks. Puts nothing on your hard drive. If you do happen to get a virus on it, just reformat it, you haven't lost anything. And if you so choose, you can still save files to your hard drive. No muss, no fuss, and definitely NO SPIES. I go to the K Mart site at least once a week and I've never had a problem.
Just my 2 cents, noted

In 1976 I needed a front exhaust pipe, they ice picked a hole in my muffler. A few years later they were caught and fined. They were also fined and had to pay back money people paid them when they went bankrupt. They allowed people to keep there cards as long as they paid them back. With 21% interest who would want to buy anything on their credit card. I cancelled my card years ago.

Micheal, i have learned the more you talk to people like Sharp shooter the more they love it, just ignore them and flag them, they will never come to your house to find out if you live in a trailer, cabin, or a million dollar house, they just like to stir the post to cause drama and chaos.
Cate, to answer you, yes we did, and everyday i delete all cookies everytime i go to a site i haven't been to before and about a dozen of times of day to just to be sure, Norton, and Mcfee do not help either they think all low tracking cookies are ok, trying to find a better spyware/virus protection that is not connected to mircrosoft or that is already programmed from the company for my puter now.
again, thanks for posting

Recommendation :

:CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

WHITE WOLF DRAGON & BMutiny ThemIDefy,

Thank you for encouraging the reporting of the troll/stalker.And thank you both for not feeding "it" either.

Please ALL..do not give personal info to these people as to no one can be certain that these people "will not" use that info to harm you. These trolls/stalkers have doing this for a very long time, and they wil use your personal info to cause you harm There are 2 of them that work together, and they will use your info on other websites, and they lack the appreciation for privacy, boundries and have np respect for the law.
They have crippled other websites, and will do the same to individuals if given a chance. Please be careful. Many trolls/stalkers are harmless, but these 2 that work together are not harmless. They will do the most damage possible.

It sounds like our freedom and right to privacy are being removed.
I've heard a lot of concerning things about implanting microchips in people as a means of control, and that eventually everyone will be involved.
Have you watched Zeitgeist? There is controversy over the movie, but some interesting points are made.

All sites do this ! Especially your email services... Spam is ads ! People pay for the ads to be shown ! So they produce pop ups, add ons, And other things ! I first realized this fighting danged so called virus protecting software ! Ever notice they find other Softwares like their oen TRojans and such ? They do not want you to use another software than theirs ! So they find ways to make you pay for higher qualitiy Program services !

This is what internet was made for.>Money to put more money in rich peoples pockets ! BUT least we get to use the internet ! Why else would they let people use internet for free such as care2 and etc.. ???

BUt who likes spam..and spying ?? Not I ....

hit your tools button... and then hit internet options... Then Delete button...then delete all/Or choose each you want.... (Delete all does not mean it deletes all your programming !) To do even further is ever so often hit the little white box that says Delete add-ons...( things that attach like Ad servers !).

Also empty your trash often ! it frees up space and lets your computer run better ! As well as sent box ! GEt rid of past stuff to free space !

Sunshine Ray is right ! registry cleaners ( like Avg... Mcafee... Symtec... Adware..Etc..) Can ruin your computer ! They wan tany thing that reads another software other than theirs as A virus, trojan, etc... They wan t you to delete it ! BUt if you delete it and its attached to your machine something your machine uses to think with ! Comput ! You just deleted part of your hard drive or your mother board ! I like avg the best ..Because it lists what ,whom, why, the anitial site it came from ! With your run programming and search programming in your computer ! You can track what it is, what it does ! This is how I found part of what they want gone are companies like themselves ! PUSh comes to shove when it comes to money ! Shove the other plum out of your computer is what their doing ! IF ya RUIN YOUR COMPUTER ! So what they will run and BUY at one of the Computer suppliers A NEW COMPUTER ! SAY KICKBACKS ! ????
