<p>Grim story about the predicted loss of US jobs through 2009. Described as a "slow-motion recession," our financial picture seems dark. Read what economists are saying about the US economy: "...tepid economic growth and a shrinking labor market..."</p>

More good news from the economic sector...the government is methodically stripping we the people of mobility, security and most of all, hope. And neither of the bozos running for president seems to have a ghost of a workable idea on how to begin to reverse our failing economy. One wants to export all opur wealth elsewhere through free trade agreements that benefit other countries and not our own, and the other one wants the Church to educate and feed us. Goddess help us!

we have already had to cut back, we are worried that the job my husband has will not last either since it is based on the seasonal items but the last yeaer or so it has slowed some, he and i have been talking about this and are worried how much longer he will have a job. this is one scary thing to be going on, i am worried about how my kids and grandkids are going to survive. I have had the feeling that the only way any family to make it is everyone living together again, all my kids and grandkids living with us just so we all can survive this orderal.

It is pathetic that the government does not put our country first when it comes to jobs. I guess it's just screw us. Noted with anger and disgust. Thanks Cate.

things have been getting bad for sometime and they will continue to get worse and be bad for several more years... my guess is, it will take another 6 years for us to see any significant upward change even begin to happen that will be readily seen... hopefully people will learn from this and not be wasteful or take things for granted when we come out of it... once again, thanks cate...:)

McCain is saying just the opposite of what the American people want in a new president. So let's hope he keeps putting his foot in his mouth every time he opens it. I don't see how colloberating with the enemy makes one a war hero? The news media has been jumping on the Dems when they question McCain's war record, but it seemed to be okay for Republicans to question Kerry's war record, and tear apart former Senator Max Cleland who left body parts back in Vietnam. All of a sudden the Republicans don't like it when McCain is attacked, but the media is silent, and does not bring up the "Swift Boating" that was done on Kerry and Cleland and others in '04.

I agree with Cate that neither candidate can fix what Bush has destroyed. But when you have a rubber stamp Congress you can get away with everything including murder!

If anyone is old enough to remember the 1973 Arab oil embargo then we all should know that the auto industry blew it when the embargo was lifted. The auto industry had the time and the know how to build engines that would get up to 65 miles per gallon of gas, but never developed the engines, and now all of us are paying a very heavy price, especially those who bought the large gas guzzling SUVs. Now the auto industry is complaining about lost sales due to high gas prices. It's their fault, and big oil still continues to rip us off at the pump.

McCain's tax holiday isn't going to give us any relief at the pump, either is offshore drilling, which will take years before it can be pumped.

And McShame is in Colombia promoting Free Trade, and then will go to Mexico and promote it there as well. Mean while illegal immigrants suck our economy dry and drive up health care costs for all of us. McCain is pandering to the Amnesty for all illegal groups hoping to get their vote, but in recent polls they don't trust him, and that might be a good sign.

We need to impeach the entire Congress and Senate and put responsible non-professionals in their stead. I don't know about anyone else but I've had it with career Congressman/women, and Senators. They should serve no more than 12 years and then their out forever...

Noted, thanks Cate.

Thanks Cate...Goddess help us is an understatement...I'm in total agreement with Cate, and Stephen...my thought was having each state draw names from their state's citzens to cover the same ONE time slot for all state legislative seats, their senators and representatives. If your name is drawn you collect the salary, health benefits etc that come with the position ...at the end of the term new names are drawn. Lobbist can't sell their snake oil for perks if there is a constant turn over..the average worker doesn't own stock so they wouldn't be looking to pad their own pockets like we have our current leadership doing.Families pulled together during the Depression and dirty thirties that hit the midwest...thank goodness my grandparents showed examples of frugal living and by following the same I and people with common sense will survive by depending on themselves not the corrupt government we have that only serve themselves.

I agree Stephen, term limits for ALL of them INCLUDING the Supreme Court Justices. And while we are fantasizing, let's go all out! Since they all are, for the most part, MILLIONAIRES, the American TAXPAYERS should not have to foot the bill for their health insurance or any retirement perks like their congressional paycheck for LIFE as it is now. Let them get by on their investments and their SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS! I am sure they could eke out an existance on that--like the rest of us (only most of us do it on the Social Security check alone). And pray tell, why do we have to foot the bill for Secret Service Staff to 'protect' FORMER, as in EX, presidents and Veeps????? That needs to change. They can afford their own 'security', let them employ some Blackwater personnel if they are so scared they will be shot or kidnapped or whatever.

I'll stop ranting now because it does no good and it is just a dream. None of this crap will change in the near future if ever at all.

A far as the economy.....we are always told to remember history or be doomed to repeat it. Guess what....WE NEVER HEAD HISTORY and therefore WE REPEAT IT endessly. The human race knows there are better ways yet we as a species condemn ourselves to our own destruction, in every age, every epoch, every century, every decade, every single day. We are perverbial Lemmings and we always rush headlong over the cliff. Always.

And those of us who know there is a better way are dragged over that cliff along with the rest of the sheeple, or worse. Think JFK, Bobby, MLK or Gandhi, even Jesus. The most enlightened among us have always perished at the hands of our most basest.

Times are hard, they will get harder. They will get worse than the Great Depression and what will we do about it? As we always have--we will survive. Some won't but the majority will. We will do what we have to do in order to survive. If that means gathering our kith and kin together in one home, pooling what resources we have access to, learning how to garden again or tending livestock, selling off what assests we have, even unto our own bodies, or becoming nomads on the highways trying to find work or a meal--all this we will do in order to survive. In the worst of times is when most of us shine. Maybe, just maybe, the Mother of all Depressions is what we, as human beings, need in order to reconnect with what is truly important in our lives. Hint; it's not I-Pods, computers, cell phones, GPS or what's happning in the stock market. Maybe we can re-learn what it is to be a part of family, of community, of caring for eachother irregardless of bloodlines, wealth (or lack thereof), race or affliction. We are the Family of Mankind. (No offence meant in that term).

Maybe...

Then again it might just be my indigestion talking...

Terrie, that is an excellent comment. That is absolutely what we will do. We will survive this.

Cate, thank you for these recent articles. The only way we can plan for ourselves is to be aware of all the current problems.

Excellent submission Cate.

I've always been angry at the number of America jobs that go overseas. I stopped buy products from companies that do this but it's only part of the problem.

I guess when the people start rioting and stop supporting these toy politicians maybe the government will finally get the hint.

Stephen, very well-stated, sir!
Cate, in order to have "bread-lines",
there must be bread available. There's
no guarantee of that, or anything.

On other news-posts in the past,
I've made the observation that we
all now know what it was like to
be a German citizen in the 1930's.
I further believe that we are also
the generation(s) that will witness
the death of the United States. Our
economy is so fragile at the moment,
if only one sector collapses, it will
bring the entirety of the economy down
with it. I sincerely believe things are
that bad.

My heart breaks for everyone who will be
devastated WHEN this happens, and especially
for my kid sister White Wolf and her family.
You know how much I love you, sweetie, and
you and your family are always in my prayers.

Oh, and Stephen?
I recently heard some wit say that it's
a good thing these people are driving their
big gas-guzzling SUV's; Soon, they'll be living
in them.

Thanks, Cate.....(I think.) :-((

Tim, my husband says exactly the same thing...our country is dying and when it does, the world will rock with instability and chaos.

Noted! Thanks for the story, Cate. I am not at all surprised. My husband just got back from the grocery store.I don't know what we would do if we had children to feed, clothe and educate. Your husband is right, Cate. Our country has been dying for sometime now. GWB was the one who pushed us over the edge. By putting us in this situation, the New World Order can make us all slaves since only 1% of the population in the world will be the leaders. Our forefathers must be spinning in their graves. Thank Goodness I didn't vote for GWB but then I have never voted for a Republican and probably never will.
