The Washington Post has obtained a copy of what labor unions, Democrats in Congress and public health scientists are calling this rule change - "a midnight regulation" designed to prevent future presidents from reducing occupational illness and death.

There is a link in the story to the proposed new rules. It's a PDF document that you can read for yourself. The proposal adds another layer of procedure as well as challenges to be answered before the Labor Department can even CONSIDER new regulations for a workplace toxin. It also wants to change the limits of acceptable toxicity exposure by assuming no workers will remain at any one job for 45 years, which has been the standard measuring rule used.

There is a lot of gobbledygook - but read pages 15-20 especially. THIS is where the meat of this proposed reg is hidden...fully padded with assumptions and speculations!

The chairs of both the House and Senate Labor Committees say the bill must be withdrawn because it violates rules requiring federal agencies to alert the public twice a year to any directives it considers.

Now it's Elaine Chao's turn. I'm betting that somehow these slimeballs in DC will machine-gun this through.

What's particularly disturbing to me is that these regs cover miners and nuclear plant workers. HOW can this goddess-awful labor department assume how long these people will be on the job? I have heard some real horror stories of the corruption in nuclear-plant inspections (we used to have 2 active nukes in Connecticut - thankfully, one was shut down) and I am SURE the workers are not safe AT ALL...nor the surrounding communities, for that matter. But that's a blog for another day...

Disgusting, and insane. Like the Labor Dept. is going to follow the instructions of Congress and turn over their records. Bush's Labor Dept. will tie the hands of OSHA (office of safety and health administration)if this "midnight" bill is passed....

Why don't they just drop the last vestiges of pretense and call it what it truly is? THE DEPARTMENT OF SLAVE LABOR.

Elaine's job is to gut safety measures for the benefit of large corporations.

Elaine Chao had a petition or two against her. She refused the. All 25,000+ signatures.

They have been doing this crap for years, I have seen it too many times when I worked on Construction sites they knew Ohsa was comming so we were on alert all satey in place to the T. so they wouldn't get wrote up or fined then once they leave its back to business as usal same health hasarzed, suck as proxie floors, lots of bad chemicals in it, abostes, sheetrockdust, all this stays in building long after there built it takes a building 7 years to settle so all that time it doing it thing. Now day that I done is they put in its call expanion joints in the sheetrock so it can move and cause less cracking in the walls. Buts there's so much crap way more than people know about thanks Cate. I agree take there labor laws and shove it.

They need cheap labor in order to compete,we are costly with all our demands for safety, retirement, health insurance, and enough pay to live on.I honestly that believe that they are avidly working to reduce our standard of living to that of India and China. There are so many here now willing to work for rice or beans, and a rental for 20,that we have little value anymore.Only the top 20 or 30% of our citizens are seen as having any real future and (we all know where they come from)the rest of us tread water for the 60-80 years of our life.

So its forward to a workers utopia, with the Republicans then Charlene? All of that welfare slashing (not that the dems didnt do a fair share of that of course),tax cuts for the trillionaires, stagnation of the minimum wage, and attacks on medicare were just a front for the real agenda of improving the lot of the toiling classes..
Bush is secretly Subcomandante Marcos..and CHE -ney? well I think we know whose side he is on now.
Its been a damn fine disguise..I would never have sussed it,without a little help.

I wonder why the Democrats are not campaigning about this. I have not seen this in any campaign advertisement. Where is the public outcry?

This is something that really matters. Where are our leaders when we need them?

They said Chao's agency violated the rules requiring federal agencies to alert the public twice a year to any directives it was considering, and they also asked her to turn over internal documents of any meetings or communications Labor officials had with business or outside groups relating to the proposal.

Elaine Chao, the ONLY original Bush cabinet
secretary, is such a disgusting little Bush
toadie. She proudly serves her corporate masters.

Charlene, what color is the sky in your world?

Thanks, Cate.

President Obama Wants You to Join the Union
On Friday, President Obama, a onetime organizer, had more words to say about unions, and they were the kind of explicit endorsement that we
literally haven't heard from a president since FDR's day. His stunning declaration of support came at the...
