Disturbing report on the proliferation of criminal ID sites. Useful? Yes. Accurate? Not always. Harmful? Maybe...

These are public records. Every court house has always made them available.
You don't need any service other than the internet.
Every courthouse has it's own choice when to charge fee's, which records incur a fee, and which records you still have to go in to get.
But these records have always been public information.

This is too much:(
What happens if the info is wrong? Can one sue:)

Very true, Carol. BUT - the worrisome part is - like the extremely flawed felon rolls Katherine Harris used in Florida in that famous presidential bungle -is how accurate is the online information?

Thanks Cate. This database is not complete and leaves off many records. I checked on many in my family and only found one person for the countless traffic tickets he has had over the years, but where are the others? This database may only be as complete as the individual agencies reports them.

I think this has value for the general public on hard crimes like rape, murder, kidnapping and theft. On traffic tickets, employers needing that info will already have access to it, but gives a negative impression on a potential girlfriend or neighbor. This service will end when a famous celebrity or senator sees himself in this database and puts a stop to it.

(Sure am glad my 20+ speeding tickets didn't appear. I have a reputation to maintain... 8^)

Phew (smiles)... geesh, that's scary, first and last name only??? I'm into genealogy and happen to know there are 100's of people with the same first/last name; thousands over the centuries. What about those with more common names... There exists the strong probability that someone with your namesake IS a criminal, and a potential employer or others could easily think it's you. My wife (we I met on Care2) did a Google for me (smiles). Turned up some doctor with a new something-or-other. She doubted it was me... but asked anyway. Thanks, Cate, as always, for your great finds. Hugs & Smiles to All, Seán

I know someone that tried this out. Most of the content is inaccurate.A profile on my hubby has him arrested for a moving violation. The only problem is that he never had a license or owned a car. He's legally blind!!!! So yes these sites are dangerous.I wonder just how many lives have been ruined by these sites!!!!!!!!

my ex didn't show up, convicted on possession, and a child sex offender, known to me, didn't show up, he is in prison on a 3 strikes deal. I just don't understand traffic violations being listed as criminal! oh, and a neighbor from my old neighborhood, did time for manslaughter, no show either. he's been jailed for spousal abuse since then, also. so what good is it?
ty Cate

okay, I just checked for a resgistered sex offender in the neighboring county, he didn't show. so we know who sneaks through red lights, but not who may sexually assault our kids. fox news must be behind this site!
:O
sorry, couldn't resist

Interesting to note that almost everyone checked out somebody! These are public records, & I am not against it. As for the mistakes, that has to do with the county/city that released the information.
I did find people that I know, but another that I KNOW broke the law was not. I find this a valuable service.

I'm not listed, either, but then,
I didn't expect to be.
Now, if they start one of these

prison the following day!....LMAO!

Thanks, Cate!

This strikes me as a thoroughly nasty, unjust and inaccurate spread of misinformation...not you Ctae but this so called concerned citizen site. I did a bit of research and found that forty people with my first and last names were born in 1951 in the UK...in the USA that figure was 475 in 1951 alone. If that is just one year how many have there been since then...and since date of births are not included in all records that means there is a very high likelyhood that somewhere a person with my name has been convicted...there was after all a David J Gould (same name) killed in the Lockerbie Air Disaster...he died just feet from our house....this stuff is scary and in the wrong hands very dangerous....just my view of course...for the budding Miss Marples among you it will be just up your street...just two doors down.

Dorothy Commander (61)
Sunday August 3, 2008, 10:53 am
Mrs. Marples here.
Of course there are common names, but there are specific areas & specific birthdates that can be used for process of elimination.
This site is not only interesting, but I found the section with sex offenders w/ photos in MY neighborhood valuable.
Again, this is all public record. Any mistakes should be noted and sent in to the website. If I found my name anywhere I would most certainly balk and contact the appropriate people about the error.

Like some of my dear friends here, I checked myself. I didn't expect
to find anything, but though better safe than sorry. I t came up with
-0- records. It's funny how much relief I felt. LOL! Thanks Cate. I
bookmarked simply because if something comes up on someone that I am
wondering about, I can use that info to check further. It could be
very helpful.

Well, there's a Catherine Ann Groves out in Washington state who is apparently a violent felon...not me, of course...but...I take David's point. Mix-ups would be terribly harmful to the innocent.

I ran a regular and advanced search on myself - I'm happy to say that I found nothing.

I used Intelius once to find a friend of mine just to contact her. It had been a number of years. There were several addresses and phone numbers, and I tried them all until I got her. Maybe I shouldn't have done it.

I think the criminal database is disgusting. But I have mixed feelings about names and addresses with phone numbers. If someone has this information listed as private with the phone company, then it shouldn't be available on a public database, even for pay. But if it is listed publically in the phone book, and you are in another state, and don't have access to the phone book of the person's state, then I don't see it as a problem.

I believe it to be a database with many faults and can be misleading if the name(s) and info are not carefully researched. The public and too many agencies already invade our privacy is nothing sacred anymore? A traffic ticket is one thing but murder, rape, robbery, is something else.

I believe if people want to look for there information this is fine and good but, do not bring some one's name who is here a member this is wrong, keep names to yourself for this can hurt a person so bad and cost friends and so much more. Even though you used this as an example be very careful of how you speak for words kill a persons life in a second and there whole familys lives too. I'm not being mean or nasty just trying to protect peoples names and a friend. Thanks Cate as always love your stoies.

Wow-ok-so I seriously am not in here. As many traffic tickets as I have had in the last 4 years-I'm shocked that one of the Joseph Johnson in there was not me. Plus-I am no innocent-I hate the law and routinely break it to make many points. Like others-this site only works if true and accurate information is given!

Joy(bergstrom)Thank you for saying what I think needs to be said :)

Interesting....Checked....Rebel that I am....I am NOT there! LOL. Didn't think I would be mind you! Also checked on my ex, my ex boyfriend and others and didn't find them either. Wondering if my state even participates. LMBO! I think people need to be REALLY CAREFUL with a site like this! I did find it interesting tho...and added it to my favorites. O GAWD! (I really think we are losing our rights to privacy...am totally against it...and I BOOKMARKED THIS??? See what it makes people do??? LOL)

I am not in there either....heh heh heh

Too bad we can't see our own files that the FBI, CIA, DOD, SS, NSA, DHS, JAG have on us...

I don't care about someone else's....I wanna see MINE! LOL.

Welllllll, whattya expect from a country with such an accurate (ahem...choke-choke) "No-fly list"? Our credit records are usually inaccurate, too.

Malachi S (6)
Tuesday August 5, 2008, 2:15 am
I found the site to not even be close to accurate. I looked up someone's name that I know is serving 99 years and it only shows 5 years.
If I want accurate info I use a state police database in whatever state I want the info from, always accurate and up to date.
I'm not a criminal. Too much work in being a criminal.

I'm not there either but my ex is but only for some of the things he's done. Any info you find there ya gotta figure is wrong or mistaken identity, they don't seem to check very thoroughly.

Well...I am a convicted felon and I was NOT in there. I did the search by all states and then narrowed to VA. Nothing either time. So the system is seriously flawed.
