Justice Department Magic: Cops Into Spies

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: Jusaic Department, cops, police, intelligence community, domestic surveillance, FBI )

Another proposed "gift" from the Bush Regime: allowing state & local police to collect, share & store data about we the people. The government says no worries, if properly implemented and controlled - but we know it won't be proper or controlled.

Do any of us really believe that conferring new surveillance powers on our police is going to be monitored and controlled by a government that regularly infiltrates "dissident" groups? HAH - this is another tool for domestic surveillance that will brand independent thinkers with a big black X.

Looks like Bush really liked the Stazi.
Americans should start being very aware and cautious.
In the days ofthe Stazi everyone was a spy.
And not many people know this but back in WW2 people didn't just betray people because they had different beliefs but because it payed well.
The people who betray people because of different belieffs are so much easyer to recognise than the ones that will just sell you out.
And some folks will truely sell out their own family.

Shades of 1984. Police are suppose to deal with crime, not spying. We already know that the police have abused their powers and have gotten innocent folks arrested from peaceful demonstrations.

Noted, thanks Cate.
I appears that Cointellpro is back in action, only under a different name. Most of us who knew what this program was can see the dangers in this new and dangerous executive order by Herr Bush. Most small town police are lucky if they can catch a cold, let alone someone actually committing a crime. The only people who get arrested in the town I live in are the one's who drive through the town are driving under the influence of alcohol. There are current two unsolved murders, one in the complex where I live, and the police don't have a clue who committed the murder. Several years they actually had a murder suspect in custody but let him go, and he later committed suicide in Germany. Way to go Holbrook police....
3 yeas ago there was an attempted murder on another resident in the complex, and there eye witnesses to the shooting, but they refused to testify against the shooter. All the police had to do was to ask a judge for a material witness warrant and they could been locked up until they testified, but the police didn't think of this. Way to go Holbrook.

I won't be surprised if Congress passes the legislation for No Knock Warrants like they tried to pass years ago, but failed, but I don't think they will fail this time around, especially after the success of 9/11. I wonder what attacks Bush/Cheney and his thugs have in mind before they get kicked to curb?

China is a prime example of neighbour spying on neighbour. Don't let it happen in your country and mine.

Thanks Cate,

Can we really believe everything the media speculates about? I mean if this article were from say CNN News or The Globe And Mail ... then the threat of personal identities could be imminent yet unclear as to how accurate their databases are. Database file filters in criminal records and Department of Motor Transport have NOT been proven as 100% accurate in official search criteria when producing leads to possible suspects, since we the human personnel are also not 100% (or 999.9%) accurate when data processors enter information to the database files.

These are the technicalities which can assist the average person who has a legitimate case of innocence especially in traffic violations. But when it breaks down to CSI Miami stuff ... now that's a whole new ball game ...lol and pro's to say the least. Hey, I like da show though when the government tries to frame an innocent person, they're usually concerned they just want to shut the case with a set-up & shut-up.

I'm finished rambling for now Cate ... Have an enjoyable weekend, what's left of it!

We have cameras everywhere here everywhere already in our paraniod knife weilding nation -The system tells us it is in order to reduce crime, however if statistics were done it would show there has been a rise in knife crime since their intruding introduction. add to this the heinious criminal register which our system keeps for ever - if a person commits a crime (perhaps of passion or desparation) they are never forgiven and cannot enter back into normal society - so again the need to escape is enhanced. we have not reduced crime with this Nimrods eye approach but intensified it. good luck Cate and fight it with all your worth Marjorie is right - put two cats in a box and see what happens !

Thanks for letting me know. I keep wondering, who is watching the watchers? Who will police the police? It seems like individual liberties are eroding a little every day. Someone said that our constitution was a big experiment. If so, we need to change a few variables.
