Read some stories of American seniors and retirees and how they're being affected - and will be affected - by the mess of the US economy. Gives one pause...

The picture's funny, but the situation is NOT. People who have worked and saved for their retirement are being royally screwed by circumstance AND design!

The thugs give seniors a 1-2% increase in their Social Security checks while food prices jumped 40-45% ...

Why do RepubliCON$ hate America's senior citizens?

Cate...gotta love feisty senior citzens, but you're right there's nothing funny about this situation. Some of our senior citzens are opting out of Meals on Wheels because they can't afford it..for most this is their one well balanced meal for the entire day. Also reports of more elderly being picked up for doing the five finger discount in grocery stores as they pocket cans of soup, and tuna that they can't afford to pay for.I'm sure Palin has a plan of action for donating Moose meat to her local food bank.

Noted, thenks cate.
I live on a fixed income and this economy has hit me very hard. There's no way I can make up the difference. Between high gas prices and the trickle down effect it has had on commodities across the board, and new energy rates are going to be more difficult to pay. So I have my middle finger extended in the upward position as well for this government of liars, thieves and general thugs. Paulson wants a blank check, and Bush wants to give it to him. I mean the blank check.
Palin said that Obama's comment about McCian's comment on the economy being fundamentally sound was out of bounds. She will be appearing on the Fox News Network on the Hannity and Colmms show. I'm not going to watch the show, and I know she's going to lie her ass off. Has anyone noticed that her hubby is in lock step with his lying bitch wife? I hope he falls down the stairs getting off Cindy's private jet...The Straight Lie Express!

Thanks Cate. Sad but so true. We thought some stock was the only hope for surviving retirement as we had such a short time left. We watched it climb slowly and them in one day it dropped so far that the dreams flew out the window. It upset my husband so much when he checked it that he had to stop looking or it was going to make us both ill. As we are still paying off college loans and trying to help family members as much as we can, you could say that we are pinched tightly and hope that we won't be screwed to the wall. It is still a good day when you wake up above ground and feel the warmth of the sun on you, but the daily challenges are sure to test us all. Peace and goodwill to everyone at least we are not alone in this mess.

Everyone who lives long enough gets old. Unfortunately, those who make the laws & policies are set for life, never having to worry about money or health coverage for themselves or their families. Since these issues don't affect them they aren't concerned. PS-great picture!

I am trying to live in this nightmare now. I became fully disabled at 47, divorced at 53, and now at 65, living only on SSDI back in the rust/snow belt because I wanted to be nearer to my elderly parents. In their mid 80's they are attempting to keep their home so they do not have to move to outrageously expensive long term living homes. Food and heating are going to be our biggest issues, they heat with heating oil, I have natural gas.

Just another sad example of how we mistreat the elderly in this country! It is disgusting! Now the economy has gone wacko, and soon my nest egg will be gone, too. Welcome to the good old USA....thanks, Cate, love the picture, and good enough for ALL Republicans!

What a lovely vacation picture. I hope all baby boomers will vacation at D.C. in the coming days and months. Let's make sure that all the politicians and lobbyist will get to see the size and magnitude of who they are messing with, when they ask to raid retiree's savings to bailout Fall Street.

It's the elderly who are getting hit
first and hardest as we watch our economy collapse.
I don't believe this bailout will cure anything.
$700 billion ($700,000,000,000.00) of taxpayer
money to bailout the big banks, in the end, will
not help if people keep getting foreclosed on.
Plus, the fact that this bailout will increase the
national debt to $11.3 trillion($11,300,000,000,000.00)
These are unimaginable amounts of money which can never
be repaid.
Thanks, Cate.

Oh PLEEESE, this surprises no one. The only people I know on social security or social security disability that are managing to eat and have shelter are those that have friends or family helping them. The rest of us are SOL. I am a senior on SSDI and I receive $1,000/month. This is more than most people. The average social security or SSDI, of the people I know, is just over $600/month. Thanks to this wonderful American government, I receive an “astounding” $10/month in food stamps. (How many of you have tried to stay healthy on only $10 worth of food a month?) The VA staff (who provides my medical care) is concerned about my 15 pound weight loss in the last three months (I’m 119 pounds at 5 feet 7 inches). My physician thinks I’m starting to look like a skeleton, to which I say, “Well no sh**!” Hunger and homelessness loom large.
