A great story of one woman's experience picking and then stomping grapes at a small winery where the ancient, rapidly-dying-out art is still practiced.

When I was young, my aunt wold make me stomp on the berries so she could make jam and drink. I ended up with purple feet that lasted for a long time. But,it was fun in a way, and something different to do. I alwasy wondered if someone knew it was my feet (although washed) they were tasting. :)

Wonderful post Cate, thank you. I never stomped grapes, but my mother made sauerkraut once and had my nephew stomp the cabbage in the crock. I think he was the only one that would do it. He went from Sauerkraut stomper to nuclear scientist. Must have been something in the cabbage. Lol.

I would love the opportunity to stomp some grapes!
It would have to be great exercise, and a great way
to let off steam and frustration!
Cate, when I saw the headline of this story, I was,
of course reminded of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".
Growing up, singing that song in church, I always wondered
if it was talking about Jesus or Lincoln.
I'm pretty sure it was Lincoln(he said, sarcastically).
Thanks, and noted!

On my planet grapes grow rampant! And it's never too early! Wine & eggs for breakfast!

(Am I an "escapist?")

Noted. While I, too, thought of the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' I also thought of the classic episode of 'I Love Lucy' in which Lucy and Ethel are stomping grapes. LOL...and thanks, Cate, for bringing this story.

We have a winery just out side of town and this fall they had a tasting and a wine stomping. It looked like a great time. Two women dressed up as Lucy and Ethyl. I'm going next year and stomp some grapes.

This would just be the ultimate fun! I, too, thought immediately of the old " I Love Lucy" episode, and I thought it looked fun then, too! I love wine of any kind, and getting to be in the process would be incredible; a few days in pretty scenery and being relaxed wouldn't hurt....thanks, Ombretta.
