Here is the backstory to Tania. A month ago when I first signed Tania's petition. I was so heartbroken and angry over this story I emailed Nancy Jane one of the wonderful hearts who created the petition for Tania on Care2. I asked her what was the update on Tania and she gave me the good news that "In Defense of Animals" was interested into looking into Tania's case.

Well finally today Nancy emailed me the good news that "In Defense of Animals" has brought Tania's story to light and posted her story on their website with the actual email addresses of the people that are responsible for implementing and enforcing the EU Zoo Directive. They could urge the Commissioner to investigate Tania’s situation, and work toward raising standards to improve the lives of millions of zoo animals in the European Union as well.

The work we must do now is spread the news after reading Tania's story off their website and follow through with sending an email to the COMMISSIONER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, as well another email to ask the EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIA to take action and alleviate Tania's suffering and put her with other elephants.

My wish is that although this is not a petition sending these emails and addressing this issue of Tanias may put pressure on getting her the help she desperately needs.

I do ask for those to help me in sending these emails and spreading the news to ALL your friends to take a moment and do as well.

For those who do I thank you from bottom of my heart.

Dear Mr. Janez Potocnik,

I heard you were responsible for implementing and enforcing the EU Zoo Directive. I have seen and heard along with video the sad situation Tania is living in. I along with many others would like you to investigate Tania’s living situation which does not look promising one bit. Her living situation is a disgrace for she is not living the life of a happy, healthy, normal elephant. I hope an improvement of standards and work on your part could be done to improve the lives of not only Tania but other zoo animals in the European Union. Your help is needed greatly.

Sincerely,
Your Name

Dr. Lesley,

I am writing you along with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria to take immediate action to alleviate Tania’s suffering. She is in a miserable condition thousands across the world are taking notice of whether through videos or her pictures. She needs help and needs to be integrated along at least with other elephants. Living a life within walls day and night all by herself is NOT the life of a healthy elephant. Many believe she would be better off in a sanctuary rather than her live in a confined cruel small room that does not offer her even room to move. I am writing you to take measures and fix this cruel problem with Tania. Thousands of people across the world are unhappy with the life for Tania for it is not life it is unnatural to the highest degree. It is cruel that no action has been done from your part yet. She needs to be integrated with other elephants to say the least your association must take action lead her to a sanctuary if their is no other answer. Many animal welfare organizations want happiness for Tania and hope you take action to make this come true.

Sincerely,
Your Name

Two emails sent based on these lines
"Dear Dr Dickie
As the Executive Director of European Zoos and Aquaria please could I ask you to investigate the conditions in which Tania the elephant is held at Targu-Mures Zoo in Romania?
As you are aware, elephants are deeply social and intelligent animals who need company and without which they deteriorate rapidly both mentally and physically. Ideally they should never be captured and taken from their mothers and their families at a young age - that is so very wrong - and when a wrong has been done like that, as in the case of Tania, it behoves us all to try and ameliorate her dreadful life. At the very least the poor animal should have daily access to a large grassy paddock with trees and the sight of other elephants and other animals!
Her current conditions consist of confining her in solitary confinement - something which I believe is against international laws for human beings - and elephants are almost as intelligent - it is cruel.
Please rescue this poor elephant!"

As Suzanne L remarked - Romania again!

Please help this elephant she does not deserve to languish like this alone she is 37 years old elephants belong together, we all know they are family oriented animals, please I urge you do not let this animal suffer any longer this is an injustice its wrong, they are born free, and that is enough that is their God given right from the creator who made them, obey and respect his creations thank you.

Have just received this comprehensive reply from Dr Lesley Dickie -

"Dear Pat
Thank you for getting in touch and I appreciate and share your concern for Tania. I have outlined below the current situation with Tania. I am afraid that some of the information you have been given about Tania is incorrect at this time. Please be assured EAZA is working hard to improve the life of Tania after the damage caused in her pre-EAZA life – she was held in a non-EAZA private facility for many years and this has caused her, through no fault of her own, to be unsociable with other elephants. I also will point you to our website and I hope you will read there some further information about EAZA and the work we undertake (www.eaza.net). Please also note that EAZA sent the information below to Commissioner Potochnik some weeks ago and we are keeping him up to date.

• On September 14th 2012, Tania was transferred to Tirgu-Mures Zoo in Romania.

• This transfer was approved by the EAZA European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) Coordinator as Tirgu Mures had a brand new exhibit that we hope in time will better allow the process of socialization for Tania.

• Tirgu-Mures Zoo has been an EAZA Candidate for Membership since April 2012, meaning they receive guidance and advice from a full EAZA Member institution in the form of a mentor, an experienced zoo and professional working for this institution. Please see here for further information about our animal welfare/substandard zoo programme, Candidate for Membership http://www.eaza.net/activities/technical-assistance/Pages/Home.aspx

• Tirgu Mures recently built a new elephant enclosure in compliance with EAZA’s Elephant Husbandry Guidelines and throughout the building process has remained in close communication with the EEP Coordinator and their mentor.

• The zoo’s veterinary staff are in permanent contact with the Head of the veterinary department of Budapest Zoo. Hungary, and a member of the Elephant Specialist Group of EAZA.

• Tirgu Mures has developed an enrichment program for the elephant which stimulates natural behavior.

• The inside enclosure is 640 m2 and the outside enclosure is 10.000 m2.

• The history of Tania which is kept in Tirgu Mures is rather a sad one which I will explain briefly. For the first 29 years of her life, this elephant was kept alone in France. She then became part of the EAZA EEP and was transferred to one of our member zoos in Spain. This zoo tried to socialize her within a group, but socializing an elephant that has been kept alone for most of her life is a very difficult task. Various attempts at various locations have to date not been successful.

• Tirgu Mures Zoo is in close communication with the Romanian Ministry of Environment and Forests and other Romanian Authorities involved.

• The Ministry of Environment and Forests inspected Tirgu Mures Zoo on November 7th, 2012. The report from this inspection states the following:

o License: The institution holds the environmental license No. 113 of June 15, 2011.

o The elephant enclosure follows the minimum surfaced provided by the regulatory documents No. 1798/2007.

o The 2013 budget of the Tirgu-Mures Zoo includes the making of an outdoor pool.

• The keepers who take care of the elephant followed an intensive training course in the effective care of elephants at Budapest Zoo, Hungary.

• The keepers use protected contact to interact and take care of the elephant.

• A renowned elephant expert from the United States, Alan Roocroft, visited Tania in January 2013 at the invitation of EAZA, and is advising on her care and future socialization plans.

• As Tirgu Mures is a Candidate for Membership, EAZA mentors this zoo in order to help the zoo work towards complying with EAZA standards. The zoo is a Candidate for Membership for five years starting in April 2012 and receives guidance and advice from Artis Zoo in the Netherlands.

• For many different species, including elephants, EAZA has husbandry guidelines have been developed which are kept up to date on a regular basis and with developing knowledge.

• Tirgu Mures Zoo is keeping its elephant in an enclosure that complies with the EAZA Husbandry Guidelines and foresees in the elephants needs. The zoo, EAZA’s mentor, the Asian elephant EEP Coordinator and the governmental bodies of Romania are using all its recourses to socialize Tania in Tirgu Mures so that she can be kept in a natural social structure with other elephants.

• Further to the advice already detailed above, the keepers will follow the Hamburg Elephant Management Course in 2013 to further enhance their knowledge and expertise on keeping and training elephants.

I hope this answered your concerns and please be assured that we are all working hard to ensure that Tania has a secure and happy future.

o The 2013 budget of the Tirgu-Mures Zoo includes the making of an outdoor pool.

Why are crappy zoos even allowed to have elephants? (or any animals for that matter!)- they knew ahead of time that the elephant would be alone at this zoo- so why did the Zoo association even allow her to be sent there?

From a good friend of mine part of an animal rescue group I asked her what her feedback was on the SAME email Dr. Lesley Dickie wrote us and this was her response,"I do not believe they are in daily contact with the zoo, which is something she wrote in a letter to a friend of mine. Does EAZA speak Romanian? I seriously doubt it.
The city of Targu Mures stands to gain ALOT OF MONEY from the EU by keeping this elephant, which is why they want her. This is what our sources in Romania and Tg Mures have said. Personally, I think EAZA screwed up big time and are trying to find how to explain this away.

Thank you. Answer should be for Tania to be moved to a sanctuary. Dr. Lesley Dickie email is not a good enough response. Tania was also moved to this zoo location which is below freezing temperatures. Does not add up please sign petition below as next step for Tania. Please.

sent the e-mail to both people,
"This kind of treatment towards any living being is wrong, unacceptable and evil. And don't forget that humans, including yourselves, are animals too. Would you like to be treated like this elephant? Think about it. Thank you."
Guess I wasn't as polite as others.

FROM CHANGE.ORG: (I don't know when this was dated)

She is the only elephant in a zoo in Romania. Her name is Tania, she is 38 yrs old and she can be found at the Tirgu-Mures Zoo, Romania in a 100 sq. meter cage surrounded by filth.

[You can see a Youtube videos here: http://youtu.be/C1Y95ZFBEJQ

and here: http://youtu.be/-egOg_ROYSw ] (Not my videos or photos)

She has been constantly seen very recently banging her head against the walls and crying in despair... Since her arrival she banged her head against the walls - the images were presented on national TV stations at max audience hours as something "funny" and as a remarkable achievement of Romanian authorities in entertaining the population and presenting "interesting" things to children! She had even tried to escape the first day she was there! Clearly Tania does not want to be there and she shouldn't be
subject to inhumane, UNNATURAL and cruel treatment. Please sign this petition to get Tania transferred to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee! Thank you all!!!
Prayers + Love,
Jillian

Wow wonderful Care2 people! I just saw this petition on their website.

----PLEASE LET'S KEEP SHARING THIS WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND THEN SOME UNTIL TANIA IS IN A SANCTUARY!

THANK YOU TO: ALL of the above and especially to desanka for the update and those that sent e-mails.

So pathetic! This poor gal! Sent letters to both!! This is what I said...

Hi! I just read an article about Tania the elephant who is in solitary confinement in the Targu-Mures Zoo in a cell by herself away from other female elephants and is doing very poorly. She is on a concrete floor that has to be horrible for the poor gal!! Since she was young she was taken from her mother and relatives and shuffled around in Zoos. Can you please see to it that this precious girl gets to live in a habitat that she was born to enjoy!? This just breaks my heart to see this poor creature sitting the way she is in this picture on a solid cement floor all by herself. What does it say about we as human beings if we have so little regard for animals life...after all we are animals too with a higher intelligence that SHOULD tell us this is inhumane for this poor gal. These animals need love and care and nutrition but most of all the freedom to be able to live their lives the way God intended them to and if we sit by and do nothing how can we as human beings even consider ourselves of the nature of having any compassion for anyone or anything!? So I am begging you PLEASE see to it that Tania is well taken care of and all the other animals that can and will thrive in living conditions that they were meant to experience in captivity!! In all sincerity...Thank You so very much!!

please scroll down and read replies sent by Dr Lesley Dickie, Executive Director, EAZA.
These do give me hope that positive work is being done to ensure that Tania does have a better, more comfortable, future. Also interesting to note the difficulty in socialising Tania after years of isolation.
Hopefully it will make people realise more fully that elephants cannot be kept in isolation.

ELEPHANT TANIA NEEDS YOUR HELP

Tania is a 37-year-old elephant suffering a life of solitary confinement at the Targu-Mures Zoo in Romania, transferred from an Italian zoo in September. Although the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria requires that zoos house female elephants in groups, Tania continues to languish without the company of other elephants. This is cruel punishment for female elephants, who are profoundly social.
Tania was captured in the wild in the 1970s, likely prematurely separated from her mother and other family members. She was then sent to a zoo in France where she appears to have lived alone for more than 20 years.

Observers note that since her arrival at Targu-Mures Zoo, Tania has been forced to live indoors in a tiny barren cell standing on concrete, often in her own urine and feces. The zoo industry reportedly claims that Tania does not get along with other elephants. Yet, zoos often use this claim to justify housing solitary elephants when, in fact, it is the unnatural conditions at zoos that deprive elephants of their most basic needs—room to move and more natural social groupings. Tania also repeatedly rocks and sways, which is a coping mechanism indicating she is in psychological distress.

Please write a polite letter to the European Commissioner for the Environment, who is responsible for implementing and enforcing the EU Zoo Directive. Urge the Commissioner to investigate Tania’s situation, and work toward raising standards to improve the lives of millions of zoo animals in the European Union.

Horrified by the way is this animal, I write asking, demanding as a citizen of the Republic of Uruguay, take immediate mendidas to give the solution described above and asked in the letter. Including an immediate investigation into the status and care of animals in the zoo. Penalizing and bringing to justice those responsible for this atrocity direct. Before the world is a real shame.

I uploaded the information and asked Twitter and has already been Retweeted others to support the same way. This is unacceptable to continue to exist. They finished the zoo. They can only be admissible Sanctuaries animal protection. We must stop the smuggling of animals and these atrocities.
