In the 1930's the range of species skinned was equally mind-boggling, including badger, skunk, wolf, polecat, squirrel, musk ox, monkey, nutria, raccoon, wombat and wallaby. Even hamsters and house cats were skinned for their fur.

noted...what a disguisting commentary on the vanity and cruelty of the human race. The skin belongs to the animal. How would humans like to be skinned? thanks so much, Jill

It's is amazing -- the human race has evolved some since the 1930's.

Agree with both Toni & Betsy, we have come a long way baby! We still have more work to do though, there are still quite a few pro-fur designers in our fashion industries & still a few celebs sporting fur. Faux fur is quite in vogue this year according to the latest fashion trends.

This was the way...way back then. With the dawning of synthetics
and man-made materials, there is no longer need for animal pelts.

Ricki Lake was famous for spray painting women in real-fur coats, Hee-Hee.
Yet, they are still made, sold, and worn my the Ignorant. Deplorable !!

Thank you Jill

Thank you Jill for the news at site! Back when I was married, sadly I did own a "Mink" coat that was like a jacket, didn't know all of the "HORRORS", or probably, just didn't pay attention..Dummy! I admit it!

Wore it once to the Symphony here in San Diego, and had started to get involved with Endangered Animals at the Zoo...Boy, I was horrified to have it on then when I wore it and saw Roger Williams....it was stolen and I hope the Person that stole it ROTS in Hell, "like I should of" for asking my Ex-hubby to get it for me...

NOW, there is Absolutely "No reason" for anyone to say "OOPS I didn't Know" unless they are living under a rock (kinda like I must of been, cause I was fighting for the baby seals, but still was STUPID on the FUR!) -- the fake fur is just as great - I am told, frankly I get my coats at the discount store right now, but if I saw someone wearing an Animals Hide, I probably would end up in the Pokey!

Carol Dyhouse "The truth was that the fur coat, once the epitome of glamour and luxury, acquired unfashionable connotations from the 1960s. It signified an older, less trendy and more dependent kind of femininity." ......went out of style...not for the cruelty done. Times are changing for the good of all.

And wondering what that poor animals is wearing to keep warm! Totally selfish & disgusting in this day & age of civilization! Killing another's life for glamor! Time for all to open their eyes that think they are cool in fur, someone else's skin. Thanks Jill.

When I was 7 I had a rabbit fur collar. I soon felt remorseful and since then have never worn anything made of fur. Thanks for the post, Jill.

Thanks Jill! So glad that wearing fur is going the way of the Dodo!! Makes me so sad to see the old fur coats at the Sally Anne shops and flea markets. Animals are the only things that should be wearing fur!!!!

Noted. Thank God I was never blinded by fashion.....what a cruel industry it has turned out to be. I was totatlly oblivious to how animals were pratically torture so some vain person could show off their "good taste".

Sickening how many millions have to die for fashion, glad it's less common but still a long way to go before being gone for good. Remember leather is just as bad and wool is close behind.

Some people are beyond redemption. I don't understand how anyone can wear fur or leather and not mourn the creature it came off of. Animals are not our slaves, to kill and do what we wish with. They are sentient beings who deserve to live their own lives, free of torture, fear and death by perverse humans.

the only thing that looks better on a fur coat is a bucket of red paint. I remember the old ladies in church wearing those pathetic skinned animal wraps which included the head and tiny dangling paws of the little creature. Stareing at me with glass button eyes. THAT was "fashion".!!!!!!!!

I' with Gloria . I remember the wraps with the heads and claws of the poor animal. I was saddened then and am still disturbed that many find wearing fur is OK.

Ditto. My late (very late: she died in 1952) maternal grandmother had one of those vile boa things made from the fur of a pine marten (I think) and the poor head was flattened and sported glass eyes, while the little paws were dangling, two at each end, with the claws somehow still attached. I was given this "object" by my aunt when I was in my early teens. I eventually burned it. Not that that helped the poor animal who died to provide a misguided woman with a "fur boa", but it was symbolic.

There was that report on French TV where a journalist asked a young woman who was about to buy a fur coat if she was aware that the skin used to be that of a living animal, which therefore had been killed...and skinned; she was puzzled; she hadn't realised that!
What the hell did she think? Probably that they shaved the poor animal!
Incidentally, she did buy the fur coat after all....

While some stupid people feel glamorous wearing fur, the very same subject keeps me awake at night sometimes. I hate it so bad that the only thought of it makes me cry. It is a complete torment in my life, something I have so much to say and wish for those doing these atrocities to the innocent animals, one I hope they pay for every creature fighting for their lives in the moment of torture, I hope they paid in the most horrible way because they are evil, and evil don't know mercy neither deserve it back.

a website sells wild hamster fur. the Gypsies are allowed to harvest them and sell the pelts. these are not the kind you get at the store.

fabulous furs.com sells this fabric of utmost gorgeousness fake fur, it looks more real than the standerd stuff. it costs $100 a yard,

Nothing like a bit of education down the decades to make people realise that they shouldn't be wearing animal fur.
