When St. Francis preached to the birds, charmed the fish and the wolf at Gubbio, he laid a foundation of respect for animals that thrives to this day.

If you take the time to get to know animals, and if you are very lucky, animals will accept you as an honory member of their species, and allow you to see and share their lives and world, which is something most people with companion animals miss out on, because they only see them as pets.

I have shared my life with dogs and cats, and have been / am accepted as one of their own, because they realise I want to know them as individual fellow beings, they have all made the effort to bridge the communication gap between my species and their own, most of the time I'm only able to guess at what they are trying to tell me, but they never stop trying, and they are not just saying want food, fuss, sleep.

You can take it as fact, they have their own secret languages, and will only try to communicate this, if you show you are worthy, I have been priviledged to have such honor bestowed upon me by dogs and cats.

Animals flock to me! I must be related to St. Francis! LOL Great post and picture, thanks Jill! BTW, when I was little, my family called me 'Snow White' because of all the animals that were drawn to me!

Animals can pick up from a human the love & will respond to it as we do! They can also pick up bad vibes as well & will not come near as this is threatening to them. They are wise beyond humans in the sixth sense. My cats & dogs communicate very well their wants & needs to me, I can read them like a book. As my chickens as well. Their body language is powerful. Anyone connected to animals can feel this with them I am sure of it as St. Francis did. Animals are wiser then we humans give them credit for. Thanks Jill.

Thank you Jill for this. From the article- Dostoyevsky said, “Love animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled.”

Today people are celebrating World Animal Day, created in 1931...

St. Francis celebrated it everyday, and he did it in the 12th century! so i will continue to celebrate this day in his honor and spirit.. thanks Jilli

Real respect to animals would be if no one would kill and eat them!

Thanks Jill! I'm a lot like Barb...animals needing help always seem to find me too. I always wanted to be like the lady that lived alone in the forest helping all the sick and hurt animals in the movie The Three Lives of Thomasina.

Thanks Jill..One of my favorite saints. It's told when he died, the birds voices rose up in sweet song and all the animals came to pay homage to this great, gentle man.

I am NOT Catholic but I have a special place in my heart for St Francis of Assisi and use his quotes of wisdom often when signing various petitions. As for people just viewing their animal companions as pets - I feel a certain amount of pity for them as they have failed to grasp how truly special, unique and interesting their furry members of their families are. Not to mention the sceintifically proven medical and well being having that tight solid bond which comes with a realtionship way beyond pet and master.

Whilst it is true that I have only ONE feline daughter (adopted from Cheltenham and east Gloucestershire RSPCA) - I know that because her species are very sadly granted with very short lifespan therefore i as Portia's human mother ensures that every living minute she has is made as beautiful and happy as possible - which does not come cheap.

My beloved Tigger whom I lost to a RTA 3 years ago is still very much missed had 12 blissful years with me ever since I adopted him from the Cats Protection League in Bedforshire. It has been said that time heals the pain - sadly that time has not yet come for me.

“If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”—Francis of Assisi

“Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission—to be of service to them wherever they require it.”—Francis of Assisi

“Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.”—Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2416

It has been repeatedly said that Humans are the most Intelligent species on earth. Hmmmm... really??

In my 40 years of existence I have repeatedly witnessed animals far smarter than humans and humans far DUMBER than animals.
