Of course as the same way we do have the basic right these living beings as Animals should also need to have their Basic rights. President Obama should stand up for their rights as well. Need to change the laws and bring the world to a better place to live in.

Thanks but sadly unable to sign. At the pace humanity is going at,i beleive animals should have more rights then our cruel species...we simply are a disgracefull bunch. this question should not even be a conversation point as all animals should autimatically have rights. Animals are so diverse and so beautifull and we ignorants neglect, starve, skin, poach, eat, use as test subjects, and ultimately murder them. UNACCEPTABLE.

As children -growing up with animals we learn -kindness-love and respect for all life ,this has to be taught to children by their parents -some cultures don't seem to have any empathy or compassion for -any animal as it is obvious by their horrific cruelty towards them -the ones who choose to be cruel are the losers in life as they never know the love and devotion that we who love and care for these loving -friends and companions give to us.-they must be given -legal protection.

I am so happy that real Humans thought about this. I lost my doggie-girl Lousha at the hands of inexperienced Vets, and there wasn't much I could do, since animals are considered property. My heart is still crying, my life will never be the same without my baby-girl. She shared so much love and joy in her little time she had on this Earth, that I would not give her for 1000 grumpy, selfish people in this world. Yes, she was a person. All our family suffered tremendously at the death of this precious angel. Please gather more compassionate caring people and make this happen.

Cannot sign the petition as not an American but animal abuse is just as bad wherever it is in the world and there should be basic rights for an animal anywhere The right to food water and freedom for a start and not to have to suffer cruelty and torture These would be like our human rights and humans are still animals There should be severe penalties for abuse to animals just the same as there is to humans

No, animals do not and should not have "legal" rights. They deserve respect and to be treated as we would want to be treated, but there is a vast difference between animal RIGHTS and animal WELFARE, and the latter is what needs to be addressed with legislation.

Tammy T (12)
Wednesday January 9, 2013, 12:13 am
Yes, I truly believe that animals deserve the basic human rights, legal rights ... I believe they are our equals and then some. Just because they don't have voices they lose out ... we are their voices and it's time ... we must speak up for them and be heard!!!!

Tammy, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I hardly consider a house fly, a mosquito or a slug my equal. I've known a few people that I consider to be "dumber than a rock", but they still have more rights than insects, rodents and yes, slugs, birds, fish and invetebrates. If I had to make a choice between saving the life of my child or my sister or my neighbor vs. a dog or cat, I would chose my child or sister every time. Not sure about the neighbor, though.

i love how spay and neuter does not infringe on an animal's rights.

how do you tell when your pet says "hey, I know my kind are dying by the millions in so called shelters. I do not want my grandchildren to die, please rob me of my reproductive ablity. I am a domesticated animal, crafted by the hand of man, so I don't really need to live as nature intended. if I did I'd be running wild, eeking out a harsh life. please, by all means, I beg of you! take away my reproductive ability!"

they didn't ask to be eaten or killed and worn. but they did ask to be neutered.

now, forcefully sterlizing humans violates human rights.

Be sure to click through to also send note to your senators and rep to support such legislation.

While the legislation is unlikely at present, bringing awareness of this matter into the minds of as many as possible is the greater theme here.

Incredible abuse occurs through hunting and trapping of native wild -self-willed - animals. The present culture's arrogation of all habitat as "property" denies any right whatsoever to others, who have lived here for far longer than humans, into many millions of years.

The enslavement - domestication - of many animals is by nature cruel. All beings are prepared for fulfillment in each their own unique way, and to deny this is also unimaginably cruel, unless you, yourself have experienced it. as you would not wish such a fate upon yourself or whomever you love, imagine, another, behind those other eyes, and extend your compassion.

Life ends. It is only what is between beginning and end. Be kind.

Either we share a sacred paradise, or we cruelly impoverish, give pain, kill what also looks out for a time with senses stronger and clearer than our own, and feels at least as much pain, with no recourse or sympathy except ours.

It appears to me, that it is simply a question of size. All living things deserve a reasonable chance at life.
The only real difference, is the size of the brain, and the size of the animal. We kill insects without giving it a second thought, but we permit larger creatures to survive, depending on their importance to our lives.
The other distinction between humans and animals, is the lack of a voicebox. Surely, if animals could speak to us, we would be more reluctant to treat them as food and/or used for sport killing.

We, humans, are a treacherous bunch.

Humans have no right to interfere with LIFE on this planet.............Hmmmm, seems to me that everything being done as far as you (Yvette) or anyone else being on the internet interferes with LIFE on this planet. I'm quite familiar with your over-the-edge emotional remarks, but surely even YOU can fathom the difference beween INTERFERING with life and helping it exist, or as the premise of giving animals RIGHTS would be, to give them every single thing that we, as humans consider our right...............that of no search & seizure, the right to bear arms, etc. Geez, the concept of animals being given the right to drive cars scares me a bit. It's bad enough some stupid humans drive with animals in their LAPS.

Hi Michela M.
You can sign! I know you love wild life in general and I guess domestic animals as well. I have seen many of your comments especially the one about Orang Utans.
The trick is to put NY as the state and 12345 as the postcode, you will find it will work.
It was suggested to me by a lady from Canada, but I only use this for animal issues and not for sensitive US political issues, because they have to be decided by US citicens only. I respect that!
