Thanks so much for more information on composting. We began our first composting bin out of a 30 gallon trash plastic trash can with a lid outside. Then we bought a cheap plastic can for the inside to put scraps in like, uncooked veggies, peels, and things like that. We put those into the bin outside, along with small twigs, grass clippings, old weeds, old rotted leaves and so forth. We are going to allow it to set until next Spring, then till it into the garden. We are beginners in the composting projects, so anything we can find out really helps.

Pam: I'm glad you found the article useful! If you're just getting started in composting, here is another great resource that's full of all of the information you'll need to make great compost: Compost A to Z: Complete Guide to Composting

The majority of my diet and the members of my family come from the fruits & veggies in my own garden, raised from heirloom seed and nourished by our compost. Our garden is chemical and pesticide free. We use red pepper spray to discourage insects. With composting, natural pest discouragement, & heirloom seeds we have our own little ecosystem for personal nourishment and and we have zeroed out a big chunk of our family carbon footprint.

In my city they sell composters every spring for around $40. This year they added rain barrels and had so much demand for both they extended the time period and instead of having people line up on only one day, they let us order on-line! I have 4 composters in my yard and have so many leaves and other brown material I bring home green material from work to keep up. People even bring me their green material to take home. Everyone jokes I must be fun to sit next to on the bus! (It's all in sealed containers and they leave it in the fridge- really, it's not that bad!!) I used the finished compost in my vegetable garden. Everyone should get into composting!
