Urgent for Dog Owners - Four Paws Dog Toy Unsafe

Animals  (tags: dogs, pets, protection, suffering, sadness, safety, toys, dog ball toy, ethics, Four Paws, injury, tongue )

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening.

I hope no dog has to suffer the injuries that Chai has had to suffer. Life is definitely difficult for this beauty. I did not do the research to see if Four Paws has changed the design I felt that this was that important. All the had to do is drill a hole in the other end and it would have been fine. Let's let them know we expect safe toys for our loved ones.

This is sicking and it makes me mad to see this dog have to go through all this pain and its life never the same again because these people never took the time to even think about what this ball might do. Most all balls have a ole in them, except tennis balls when my dof loves to play with. Yes I say Boycott them, And get a petition on them and make the have to pay for all the damages for what they done to this dog. Heart ripping is what it is, I have not seen a petition but, I will look and if there is one it needs to keep moving and not lay around for a year like I have seen some of them thats another thing piss's me off, petitions not getting fowarded on but seeing them a year later how and the heck are they suppose to help animals if they are not signed and reach above the limit. By the time its started or ended its already to late think about it. Please don't let them lie move them on for the sake of the animals we are all they got. Thanks Morgan. Sorry for rattling on just stating facts and all of you know me how much I love my animals. Hugs to all of you my friends.

Noted...with sadness! Hope Chai and his master gets what they deserves! (A little late for that isn't it? A life with a tongue?) He has certainly suffered...and will continue to do so! Four Paws needs to be held accountable!

Good grief, Last Christmas some of these balls were donated to the shelter where I volunteer (by various donors). Thank you so much for posting this. I had no idea. Oh that poor baby (and guardian). I will certainly warn people to stay away from Four Paws products.

i heard about this from a friend of Chai's owner and i sent a nasty email to the CEO of Four Paws. he had his secretary (he couldn't even respond himself!) reply to my email with a bunch of lies saying this is the only case they have heard of and that they took the toy off the market. i know of at least 2 other cases and i know they know of at least 1 more. and for that matter it shouldn't matter how many cases there r, 1 case is too many! they said they do extensive safety tests on all their products. it's only common sense that when u take a hollow ball with 1 hole in it and squeeze it, it creates a vacuum and sucks in everything near it, including a poor dog's tongue. i don't need to do any safety tests to know that. last i checked the website the toy was still up for sale. i did, however, check for while i was at Petsmart the other day and i didn't see it there but that could've been a personal choice of the store.

I'm forwarding to all my friends so that this doesn't happen again. This is terrible. I would love to be on the jury of this civil trial. I'm spreading the word. I can't stop crying, this should never have happened.

We all here at Care2 should contact Four Paws and protest and boycott until they make the needed changes. It's time to hit them in their pockets. I'm writing every vender that I find online selling this toy, until Four Paws makes this right. Boycotting the vendors of these toys will also help to get this problem fixed so that it doesn't happen again. I just can't tell you how outraged I am over any animal being hurt while playing with a toy. It should never have happened.

This should definately be pulled from the stores, all stores that carry it. That is so scarey. I had a similar toy for my dogs, but they didn't like it so I threw it away. Thank goodness! Don't know what I'd of done if this had happened to one of them. How sad for all of the dogs who this happened to when they were just trying to play and have fun. Thanks so much for this story Morgan. Have passed this along to all my dog owning friends.

I just e-mailed all my friends about this...So sad...Chai is lucky to have such wonderful companions...I'm also going to see if we still have one of those toys around. Luckily, my guys prefer fuzzy things, but I'm pretty sure we have one from our years-old pile of toys.
Thank you so much, Morgan!

I think I have seen it for sale at the vet. Please check your vet out and pass it around to all your friends, print it and hang it into canteens, back of public toilets, hand them out at supermarkets and tell all petshops in your area and don't forget kennels .

This poor baby, never again!!!! PLEASE HELP TO SPREAD THIS TO ALL DOG LOVERS.

Thanks Morgan for this Info.

What a foolish design concept. Something as simple as an additional hole would make this toy safe--the designer is an idiot!

Noted. I accompanied a friend to PetSmart this afternoon and took a copy of this article with me...sure enough, the product was availablel for sale. While I was there, the manager got a small basket and pulled them off the display rack. She said that she intended posting the article at the rack and on the store bulletin board. Thanking her I also suggested she take a look at all toys for animals and see if this situation existed in other products. We will see, but I was pleased to be armed with the information. Thank you, Morgan.

Thanks for the story Morgan. Email with comment and pictures sent to Four Paws.

Mr. Allen Simon,

My family and friends are in support of a boycott of your company until you recall the product pimple ball with bell, as it is designed in such a way that irreparable damage can be caused by its use.

For your information, I've copied just part of this very sad story (see below) of how Chai the Labrador mix dog sustained an horrendous injury with one of your toys. It appears your company had been informed of at least one other similar case in 2005 and chose not to recall the toy then. I trust that you will now do the right thing and show respect and compassion for the dogs and recall these dangerous toys.

Sincerely
Bronwyn Hughes

I have just received this reply from Four Paws regarding my letter to them earlier today.

Subject: RE: Injured by a Four Paws Toy

HYPERLINK "http://cl.exct.net/?ju=fe5a107576640c79711d&ls=fde715747d620c747611747d&m=fef717727c6200&l=fec7177070650274&s=fe3715727565077d721678&jb=ffcf14&t="fourpaws.com

Thank you very much for your email message. Like you, Four Paws is deeply concerned about reports of injuries suffered by some dogs as a result of a manufacturing defect in some of our Pimple Ball toys.

We want you to know that we have stopped shipping these toys to our distributors and we have asked them to have retailers immediately remove the toys from their shelves and return them at our expense.

We have also stopped all shipments of the toys from the manufacturer, and we are sending Executive Vice President Barry Askin to personally inspect the manufacturer’s facility in order to make sure that the defect has been corrected. The ball was designed with two holes to eliminate risk of suction. Unfortunately, in the production of some balls, the smaller second hole became blocked on the inside, thus making it hard to detect the defect with the naked eye.

As a result, in addition to repairing the toy molds, we are also changing the packaging of the Pimple Balls. The packaging change will result in a tie that must clear both holes, thus insuring there are always two clear holes in the toy.

If you purchased a Four Paws Pimple Ball with Bell toy, please immediately take the toy away from your pet. Instructions to return the toy are posted on our website www.fourpaws.com.

Thank you again for your message and your concern. Please be assured that the safety and well being of pets is our top priority and we are doing everything we can to make sure that this problem is solved as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Allen Simon

President/CEO

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sorry for the dog that got injured but I was happy to see the reply from the CEO of Four Paws, reacting quickly to the issue. Will still forward this to all I know, the toy could still be sold in Europe.

Sorry, but I just HAD to post another comment! I didn't read Chai's story until after I made my first comment and now I'm not so happy about Four Paws any more! Seems they knew that this could and in fact DID happen in 2005! And they still have not made any changes to the product. Outrageous!! I feel deep sympathy for Chai and his owner as well as other dogs who were injured by this toy. I saw the ball in the picture and realized it is the same ball my dog plays with!! This could just as easily happened to my dog! Scary feeling!

The same thing happened to one of my dogs, Katlyn. Thank God I was at home at the time. I couldn't get the ball off of her tongue and was afraid to try and cut it off. I rushed her to the vet and they had to cut it off! She was lucky that the circulation hadn't been stopped too long to save her tongue. Four Paws does and has known about this for years and I have the vet bills to show for their dangerous product!

I was cleaning house today and vacuuming all the dark reaches and out came---you guessed it the Four Paws dimple ball. I threw it away. Some of these balls were bought years ago and are still out there just as mine was. Please continue to inform your friends of this danger. I just can't imagine having a dog go through this pain and resulting disability. I just lost my great dane to cancer so I'm really a bit sensitive to dogs in pain right now.

I hope that this company will get what's coming to them. It is incredible that this kind of thing can still happen today ! It is not difficult to be advised on many factors by experts, we are in 2008 after all ! Companies like this wanting the money from dogs owners and washing their hands of the responsibility for safe toys should be run out of business.

I rarely leave my dog alone with toys of any kind. But then we all have occation to run into the kitchen or bathroom with out thought about a toy ball. This could happen to any of us with animals. I know how he feels and can only cry for him and the dog. At least they say they removed them from shelf stores. Dog are like 3 year old children and get into everything they shouldn't. We have to be more dilligent when we buy. Of course, sometimes something looks safe, like this ball, and we think it is okay. Accidents happen but this was a sorry thing to happen to a loved pet.
