Flanked by guards and expressionless, Magnotta, 29, appeared at the Montreal courthouse via closed-circuit video link for a hearing that lasted less than five minutes.
His lawyer, Pierre Panaccio, entered the plea on Magnotta's behalf and requested his client undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness for trial.
That motion will be decided Thursday when the court reconvenes.
Panaccio told Magnotta he wanted to discuss his defense with him and asked him call him at home.
"I'd be pleased to talk about this," Panaccio said, according to the CBC. "Okay," Magnotta responded, before being led back to his cell.
Magnotta arrived in Montreal Tuesday following his extradition from Germany. At the tarmac in Montreal, he was escorted off a military transport plane in shackles and escorted by a team of law enforcement officials.
Magnotta was arrested on June 4 in a Berlin Internet café, days after police believe he videotaped the murder of Jun Lin, mutilated his body and mailed his hands and feet to government offices and schools. Lin's torso was discovered near the Montreal apartment where Magnotta lived. Lin's head, however, remains missing.
Charged with first degree murder, Magnotta was for a time considered a priority fugitive by Interpol. He did not fight extradition and quickly admitted his identity when confronted by police in Germany, telling them, "OK, you got me."

This monster should spend his life in prison for not only this crime, but for also torturing and killing those poor kittens.

Life in Canada is not always ALL of their life. He will become eligable for parole at some point and in all likely hood get released. Our laws in Canada suck.

This guy is sick!!! I pity his parents!! I can't imagine the pain they must be going through! If this guy ever gets out of prison he more than likely will try and do the same thing again! That's if he gets out of prison alive!!

Not to mention how many innocent animals he has tortured and killed mercilessly before he turned to a Human being!

I am convinced that this "indefinable something" called Magnotta has mental problems;
he killed and ate her boyfriend and only two years ago he tortured and killed two kittens with a vacuum cleaner, plus another cat has been eating alive by a python and as his greatest satisfaction has also posted the videos on utube.
I hope that Magnotta may to spend the rest of his miserable life to shovel all that shit with which he smeared his existence.
It 'important to note that very often serial killers have a first approach to violence by abusing pets/animals, but sad news that at least in this case represents the reality of the facts
thanks so much for the upgrade Elaine

I'm pretty sure Magnotta is going down; I would be shocked out of my beanie if it was otherwise. They are going to throw away the key on this man, and hopefully, I don't have to eat my words. Actually, I think this is a great case for taking animal cruelty and murder seriously for the officials, since they seem unable to take the cruelty of animals seriously by itself without involving humans. But then again, there are have been countless cases.....dare I hope the courts act on intelligent foresight in the future !

I know I may sound not very patriotic but I can say one thing?? In Italy this gentleman would have done just a little bit of prison, our justice is a real mess!!!!! I really hope that in Canada things work differently (almost sure...)

Marlene Dinkins....You are so one million% right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know what he did to the guy and it was horrible BUT that guy played in that vile playground and that's not to say in anyway he deserved what happened .BUT I AM SO ON THE SAME PAGE YOU ARE! It's about the animals, those were the truly innocent and that is what I want him to die for! as for the young man, he used to be Luka's lover and if he would go back and have relations with Luka again then my belief is that he KNEW what luka's past presented....There is almost no way he could have not known about luka as that whole seedy underground, was very well aware of the type of individual luka was. Therefore making him all the more culpable to have steered clear of him . So in that respect Yes, I do believe he had every chance to have save himself and knowing what Luka had done, there is NO WAY IN HELL that I'm letting someone handcuff me to the bed posts.

This " man " yes he is a man, is a psychopath. He doesn't feel guilt or empathy. Life sentence with no possibility of parole or he will kill again. Psychosurgery would be an option, thus he would be reduced to nothing. I am against capital punishment so I think psychsurgery would really be the best solution for SK and psychopaths in general.

I knew it wouldn't be long before this mentally ill person killed a human after torturing and killing animals (cats) on-line.. long before this act, if the law had done something to start with a young man would still be alive and a killer would have gotten the help he surely needed. the upfront cost far less then waiting to deal with the after math... we need to address these red flags we need to address animal cruelty and the people who commit these crimes against our fellow beings. we need change as it seems we continue to watch animals abused and hurt only to watch the untreated sickness lead to further blood shed ,domestic violence, child abuse, and in the end we all suffer because of ignorance. an ounce of prevention is worth more then a pound of cure after the fact.. education is key..
silence is acceptance
life has value beyond measure

I would love to personally thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart for noting this story. I have been on this story for over two years and have had my severe disgruntlement's, due the fact, that this POS has managed to avoid authotitues as well as those same digruntalments towards the laxidasical measures NOT taken when reports are made on animal cruelity cases. As well as their failue to search this person out and punish him to the full extent of the law, for his pathetic start of murder by the torturing and sadistic deaths of precious innocent animals . And, the failure of law enforcement, to take this behavior extremely serious. As it is known facts, that every serial killer, had always played the power role by the starting with, the killing and torturing to death, animals. AND, until law enforcement agencies across this country as well as others, this will only continue. Had they taken these complaints seriously when first reported well over two years ago, many animals would have been saved and an innocent human being would never have had his mother collapse at an airport for the loss of her beloved son!
With great appreciation,
Elaine A.

Micheal Moffat speaks a lot of truth in his comment as well as you do Elaine in your statement just above mine. Society needs to treat animal abuse as a serious issue, for in every case these serial human murderers had started with animals. They work at the desensitizing themselves with small rodents, then kittens, and a work up continues. They also get some sick satisfaction in what they do, be it sexual or a thrill of power over another, the control of it's life in their hands, in essence the act of playing god.

These people need serious help from the get go, but if they are not able to change, then we as a society need to remove them from being able to do harm. This is why, it should be done as quickly as possible, and not be just writing it off as, "well it's only an animal." There is a sick human that is needing help if they are hurting an animal, if you can't find compassion for the animal at least realize that about the human.

I feel badly for the parents of this young man, I watched how the Mother suffered with Jeffrey Dahmer, how she didn't feel she had the right to grieve the loss of her own son, as it was her son that took the lives of so many other parents children. Had Luka gotten the serious attention for some help or at least be put away, then we'd not have another Mother who lost her son in such a horrific manner.

The animals are the proverbial canaries in the coal mine and they sacrificed their lives to be the warning to the humans who don't seem to want to wake up and do the right things, but allow the events to play out in this all too horrendous way. More animals tortured and more lives ruined because those in the positions to do things to prevent it, do not do so.

I don't think they'll have him within the general prison population, if they do, he will not live long. Not even the inmates want a cannibal walking among them, is why Jeffrey Dahmer was killed at first chance.

"NEVER BELIEVE THAT ANIMALS SUFFER LESS THAN HUMANS....PAIN IS THE SAME FOR THEM THAT IT IS FOR US....EVEN WORSE, BECAUSE THEY CAN NOT HELP THEMSELVES"

Pleads not guilty? Wants more insane 'fame' for a while longer. As if anybody could defend him and isn't guilty. As someone already said he's psychotic and there are many animal lovers in prison and will teach him a few things.
Life sentence in Canada means 25 yrs. guaranteed I think, then he has to apply for parole which nobody will ever give him. He won't ever be out.

A lot of these people who commit homicide say that they're innocent after they've been caught or there's much evidence to convict them. I think they have a lot of evidence here in this case so I don't think that this man will get off now with lies. I think as Kenneth says, he'll get a lengthy sentence and with the viciousness of his crime, I don't think he'll ever get out on parole. He's too much of a psychopath to get parole. There's a good chance that he'll spend the rest of his life in an institution for the criminally insane.

Once animals are killed, just a matter of time before he killed humans. Well, give him the needle and let him go on to hell, orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, throw his ass in prison, and let the prisioners eat away at him little by little. That's a good fair enough conviction for that horrible evil cruel MONSTER.

noted. I hope this bastard never sees the light of day again. How in hell is he pleading not guilty and who on this earth would believe this low life, sick, evil monster. Bad enough he has killed humans and I don't discount that, but maybe now..people really will see the correlation between animal killings and serial killers and take the appropriate action Sorry for not getting to this sooner Elaine...thanks for the post and may HE ROT.
