Death for Profit - Privatized Prisons - TAKE ACTION!

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: private_prisons, DHS, CCA, corruption )

Private prisons don't care about who they lock up. At a rate of $200 per immigrant a night at their prisons, this is a money making scheme that destroys families and lives.

CCA Whistleblower Exposes Negligence: Death For Profit
In March 2009, Roberto Martinez-Medina was detained and arrested for not having a driver’s license or proof of legal status. Immediately after his arrest, Medina was sent to CCA’s (Corrections Corporation of America) Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. Less than a month later Roberto Martinez-Medina was dead.
During his detainment at Stewart Detention Center—the largest private prison in the country—Medina complained of a pre-existing heart ailment, but was denied medical care over several shifts. There is no medical service available at the detention center, and the nearest hospital is at least an hour away. The main reason for this lack of basic care: CCA had cut medical care costs and other basic needs to increase their quarterly and yearly profit.
Bryan Holcomb, an ex-CCA quality assurance manager, spoke exclusively to Cuéntame’s “Immigrant For Sale” producers to expose the negligent operations at Stewart Detention Center. Holcomb assures that this malpractice is common at the facility due to ongoing cuts to basic services. From contaminated drinking water, to chemical agents being used to quell detainee complaints, Holcomb says CCA has gone to great lengths to cover up its insufficient care and mistreatment of detainees.
Cuéntame’s latest exposé highlights precisely what is wrong with America’s penitentiary system and immigrant detention centers. The continued persecution of undocumented immigrants has created a multi-billion dollar operation—private prisons with a single profit motive: the incarceration of immigrants.
States send your tax dollars to these corporations—approximately $200 a night per detained immigrant. Yet, the funding is not ensuring basic necessities for migrants waiting for their legal status to be resolved. Instead, your money is lining the pockets of CEOs and fat cats who view our immigration system as one big ATM machine. It is no surprise that these same individuals and companies have successfully lobbied for the passage of harsh anti-immigration laws across the country.
In fact, Georgia—the home of the nation’s largest private prison—just passed HB87, a de facto criminalization of immigration. Gov. Nathan Deal, who advocated and signed the bill, received thousands in campaign contributions from CCA during the last election cycle. Undocumented or not, if migrants can’t prove their legal status they’ll be shipped off and face harsh, life-threatening conditions, all while private prison CEOs rake in the cash.
CCA profited off of Medina’s incarceration, and ensured an even greater profit by denying him critical health care. The inhumane conditions at CCA facilities are directly related to their obsession in cutting costs for profit.
Cuéntame is demanding an investigation into Medina’s case. So far, all parties involved have ignored and even covered-up elements of the case. You can demand an investigation at
Private prisons across the country are making a killing, and you are paying for it.

"Signed" (even though the petition appears to be intended for residents of the USA since the ZIP is a required field, whereas there is no field for "country"). It so happens that Novi Zagreb has the same ZIP/Postcode as some parts of New York.

In addition to private prisons being motivated by profit, prisons in general are a way of bullying people. Psychiatric institutions can be even worse in that one does not have to actually commit a crime, but just do or even just write something undesirable, to be incarcerated, and they hide behind the "noble" facade of "medicine".

I've signed so many petitions and sent so many letter on this subject over the last 35 years it makes me ill to think we still continue on this slippery slop to a police state, the likes of which the world has never seen. All built around Greed and the failure of the American citizens to pay attention by accepting being relegated to their lot of consumers, by the corporatists Fascists, and not claiming their role as participants in democracy.

Truth, Hawkeye . . . But, much like the oft-quoted Pastor Martin Niemöller poem . . .

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . .
And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

Death for is starting to be the motto for all our Corporate run government. It will cost more and more if they get thier hands on them all, which is what can be said about any of our current government run agencies/departments/public facilities. The worlds largest scam is going on right here in American and that makes me ill/digusted/angry just to think about ...every day now. America has isappeared into a series of Corporate logos ..wars and hate/division to keep the masses distracted. We need less prisions if anything and not any run by a corporate period !!

...who do we really think would stand up for us outside of the U.S. ..if that 'they came for ____' comes full circle in the U.S. WHo would ? No one I can think of. We've angered or made fools out of the rest of the world and's just us and 'them' .....I expect 'they' will soon be selling each of us off to the highest corporate bidder or branded as damaged goods to be cast aside one. The middle class is their target so hang onto that we unit and Stand Together ...the sooner the better.

Signed, but it is not just immigrants that are being used up for profits! Everyone from the the poorest to the most wealthy "middle class" person is being sucked dry of every penny for corporate profits. Most of us are denied health care, a safe place to sleep and most other BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS all in the name of "progress" and money just like the immigrants in this article, only in our case there is at least a thin veneer of freedom granted to us...

My Brother Jae, I’m going to disagree with your comment that “no one would come to our aid” to a small degree. I believe IF the American People stood up in mass, as they have in WI, to make a stand opposing the multi national corps and their puppets the vast majority of the world’s peoples would rise up in mass to stand in unity with us, if they believed we were for real.

The problem of course, as you point out, the American public is so divided, distracted and duped by the BS from the on high (Job Creators) they don’t recognize the true enemy and are content to lay the blame for their problems at governments feet. You and I know our government is the deflection and not the true authority and we both have spent much of our live trying to shine the light of truth into the shadows, to little avail.

I also believe what it will take to pull the pendulum out of the dark side back into the side of light is a Mass Citizens General Strike. They, the Fascists elements, need to be shown what shutting it down really looks and feels like before they will understand they are not the power they believe.

Prisons-for-profit firms are one of the greatest threats to liberty and society we currently face. They literally care for nothing except locking people up to make money, innocence or guilt is irrelevant to them. We incarcerate too many people already - these privatized prisons will drive that number even higher, which is unacceptable to me! Thanks for posting this.

OK, you have mixed a lot of different issues together to the point you just don't make any sense.
If they kill prisoners they don't get the $200 a day anymore, that would make them bad at being a corporation also. Prisons for profit are bad.
But you are once again trying to make a big boggy man, the prisons for profit.
We all want the overrunning of our country stopped
An illegal immigrant should not ever get their status straightened out,
they should be deported permanently.
We do need to stop the illegals from coming here,
we would prefer not to kill them,
but if that is the only choice,
do it!!!!!!!!!!!

Any business run "for profit" is, by design, anti-consumer, anti-labor, anti-Everything that cuts into profit, including healthcare or any basic form of "care".. so it's not surprising that For Profit is basically inhumane. But the majority of politicians are "for profit" politically, so they DON'T CARE!

Sad story, Carole. Thanks for sharing. I believe that I signed this awhile back when it was first making the rounds on the Internet. I also shared it on Facebook. That's very true, Matthew; but unfortunately, there's something about being fed manufactured mass hysteria by "representatives" being paid to represent citizens (while actually servicing self-interested corporations), controlled by media that is also in bed with the same corporations, that smacks of treason.

More and more local and state governments are selling/privatizing services, like toll roads and parking lots, to foreign companies in order to make up for the lack of revenue causing budget deficits. These privatization deals are being arranged by the biggest financial institutions, like Goldman Sachs, and the contracts solely benefit the investor; the contracts are up to 100 years long and any profit deficit are to be made up by the tax payer. Prisons, of course, are the worst to be privatize since the cost of human misery and exploitation is boundless. It comes down to this, our government is selling our America piece by piece to highest bidder!

Noted, signed and shared on Facebook, thanks, Carole. Per capita there are more people incarcerated in the US than any other country. Make no mistake we are all disposable to the ones in power, which is well illustrated by the the whole debt ceiling nonsense. All the wars, including the "War On Drugs" will not end because it makes too many people very wealthy, including prisons holding people who had a little pot on them. We have quite a fight on our hands, I hope we are up to it! Some great comments here!

Sunday July 31, 2011, 7:11 pm
Sorry Carole. I didn't see this until now. We have all seen the State of Arizona pass its most recent immigration legislation SB 1070. Now that the prison population rate has stabled hasn't anyone wondered why there is this sudden drafting of this legislation? Could it be that, even though the privatization of prisons does not save money (especially in the State of California), provides substandard conditions in many instances including criminal acts perpetuated upon the prisoners and lastly, but paramount to incarceration, is public safety, also compromised in Arizona. In additon, we have the Governor's office, Jan Brewer, have direct ties with CCA (largest Private Prison Provider) with three people in her employee previously employed within CCA or its lobby group, or still is. Then we look at John Kavanagh, the Appropriations Chair and Representative of District 8, AZ accepting lobby money from the group which lobbies for the Geo Corp,, 2nd private prison provider. Doesn't that make one wonder????

Gotta love the numbers: $200 a night x 365 days = $73.000 a year. I bet that for only 10% of that amount, almost all illegal immigrants will choose to stay in their countries, instead of being a slave labor in USA. Yup, $7.300 makes a good income in most parts of the world.

Check United Farm Workers page to get an insight about life of illegal immigrants working in agribusiness. Their latest action alert is "Boy picking bell peppers collapses from heat".

I've heard that this is coming soon to a prison near all of us. We MUST NOT allow privatization. Our tax dollars are meant for good, and we can do much more with prisoners to enrich their spirits so that the do not get out to commit crimes again, first of all, and secondly, we must demand that no cuts to social programs are carried through by this new deal they are caving to the Tea Baggers on re: debt ceiling! Post offices are also closing. It is time to be logical and raise the price of stamps to save jobs (I think 44 cents to mail a letter is CHEAP, and can pay 1) , build the bullet train, improve infrastructure, create jobs in these ways as well as green jobs, The more jobs we lose, the less awe spend, and the less we spend, the more jobs we lose, which leads to losing our homes. The wealthy can buy luxury items and save their extra, while the poor have no choice but the spend what little money they have, and this goes up through the classes by degree....SAVE JOBS that exist, and Create jobs that the remainder of us need. Prisons must not go to private companies for so many reasons. What is happening? I have never felt so endangered by such geed and so much ignorance before. We have an incredibly enlightened and intelligent President trying to do good for us, but, the new breed in Congress is so ignorant...we MUST DEMAND that they be expelled.

This issue is just a symptom of an underlying disease, the corporatization of America. We need to cure the disease not treat the symptom. The American People need to stand together and stand up to the corporate interests. We need to get the Corporations are people decision overturned and demand that the anti-trust laws be enforced, only then can we begin to effectively begin to address the individual issues caused by the underlying disease.

The US of A has turned into one big scam right under your noses, having lost their moral compass 'ages' ago!!! Politicians and corporates are only interested in greed and profit, not ever thinking of the benefit (or anything else for that matter) of the American people!! It's time to take back your country even if you have to start from scratch - and yes, once the people themselves speak up I'm confident you'll have lots of support from outside the USA but it won't 'arrive' on a silver platter, you'll have to do the ground work!! And united you can!!

Privatizing prisons is one of the most horrific policies, ever perpetrated on the any civilization.
Where government runs prisons, there is less than appropriate regulation. I shutter to think what goes on in privately owned prisons.

How would you like to be one of those innocent souls, through adverse circumstances, was found guilty and put in one of these hell-holes? We know this has happened throughout history. That's just 'one' of my objections to the death penalty.

Possibly, every U.S. citizen, should spend one day, as a volunteer in a penitentiary.

Fellow citizens - the decision is ours, to make.
In 2012, we can assist President Obama, by removing the Big Business politicians and replacing them, with those who would have our best interests at heart.

Thank you *C*. This angers me so I couldn't sign quick enough! As I went down reading every post I tried to send at least 10 people stars...unable to. You all know whom you are.
I see there are many friends of mind who haven't noted. I will fwd. this now.

Thank you for demanding an investigation

TY Carole. You cannot currently send a star to Just because you have done so within the last week.
I do not care for this brave new world. It was predicted that we'd all becomew numbers, and we have, in more ways than one. Not only have our person identities been revoked, we all - even those in prison - have become just numbers in The Bottom Line. Henrietta, yes! there are more of Us then of Them. Hmmmmmm.
Sorry Jae, I can only send you one star today :)
