A string of studies have not only implicated hydraulic fracturing, but the related practice of pumping dirty wastewater deep underground, as the cause of unprecedented swarms of earthquakes.

Of course earthquakes are going to happen. Any geologist could have predicted that! Pump water in between rocks, and the excess pressure has to go somewhere! Unfortunately, all of these companies have MASSIVE legal departments that can fend off lawsuits forever, and once a major victory is announced, they can just go bankrupt (as seen in West Virginia) before a dime is paid. The only sane solution is to prevent any mining whatsoever until HUGE deposits have been paid in advance to recoup for any damage. Doing so would give companies an incentive to behave.
