YOU HAVE NO REASON TO APOLOGIZE FOR OTHER WHITES, KATHY, AND I HAVE NO REASON TO APOLOGIZE FOR PREJUDICE BLACKS. So don't even go there.

We all feel real bad for the children. They were subjected to racial slurs. They were excited to go to the pool, like any children would be, and the other children's parents were saying horrible things. I will grab an excerpt from the article for Care2, but go to the site.

THERE ARE VIDEOS FOR YOU TO SEE AT THE "VISIT SITE" TAB.

Thanks. Please tell all your friends about this. I have had much trouble with cyberstalkers over the past three days at Care2 and may not be able to use e-mail to send this news.

Care2 has members from all over the world - it is a terrific and diverse network of caring people. I cannot understand why I am singled out for all of this interferrence, but I am, and I have much of it on film.

So please help spread this news so that the minority children and their parents will clearly see that most people do not agree with the racism they encountered at Valley Swim Club.

Thanks in advance!

I know Mary. It's just that close minded, ignorant people just piss me off! Especially when it comes to hurting children! THAT makes it 10 times worse! So I was mainly apologizing to the children. If I had a pool they could all come and swim at my house. Alas, I don't though... but, they can come and play in the hose/sprinkler! Seriously, I can just imagine how they must have felt. No child should be subjected to something like that! I could do more ranting and raving, but I won't. You know how I feel about this. Take care Mary. I will pass this along.

Well we ALL need to band together to get this problem in America fixed once and for all. I just watched this on TV and my blood is still boiling. Lets get this out and about and make those officials that did this accountable. We need to post their names on here and in the newspapers so that EVERYONE can point at them and make them feel uncomfortable in their skin - regardless of colour. I am still boiling this is the 21st century here in America or they forgotten that?

WHA-A-A-A?!?

I lived in Fla in the late 70's, and there were still a few unspoken Jim Crow societal laws, but I'll be honest, after living in Jamaica, I'd simply accepted that some were just IGNORANT. People are just PEOPLE--OMG! I feel so much for those kids! I went through it too, and by golly, it HURTS....even as it makes you tough.

Thank you, Mary, after all, can't shoot the messenger, right? lol

I'll be angry about this in a little
while, but right now, I'm just gobsmacked.
Is this 2009, or have we all time-warped
back to 1952?
This is disgusting, virtually beyond belief!
The director of the club really gave himself
away, when he said the African-American children
"would change the complexion of the club".
Whether this was a Freudian slip or not, I don't
know, but the man surely said more than I'm sure
he intended to. Someone needs to tell him who the
President of the United States is, and then show
him a calendar. I hope these folks find a good
attorney, and quickly!
Thanks, Mary.

I see racism is alive and well in Philly. Personally, I'd much prefer to swim with these kids than the elitist whites!

I hope another pool offers these kids a place to have some summer fun. Life is too short to deny these kids the chance to enjoy themselves.
Thanx for posting this Mary. xx

You know there really is still a chance for peace and that chance will definitely increase if we each do our piece. So let’s make peace -- in our homes, in our own hearts, in our relationships, in our communities, in all of our dealings and in the world. Peace be with us all.

Just thinking this day camp ought to lose it's license at a minimum. Not only are they perpetuating racism, but they are passing it on to the staff and to the children who have paid memberships and come every day. I have always been aware that racism is not a thing of the past, but this is blatant discrimination. What they need is a bunch of peaceful protesters to gather around their facility when people are dropping off and picking up their children. The day camp needs to be sent a strong message by the community who they have to face on a daily basis. My heart cries for the children who were turned away.

Does anyone know if Creative Steps Day Camp has an email address or at least a mailing address?

It's almost unbelievable that this can still happen. The President of the USA is black - would they not allow him or his kids either? I shudder to think how these children must feel. It will bring history to life for them undortunately. There must still be a lot to be done. I would have thought something like this would be illegal - if it's not, it should be. This is pure racism.

Most of my Care2 friends are not black. I want those children to SEE that the people who were rude to them are not representative of all Caucasians.

Children's minds and hearts are so tender. Please show them the truth -- that most of the world has laid aside those racist ideas. Thanks in advance for helping to alert other Care2 members to this atrocity.

What is most regretable is that children heard their parent's rude, racists comments to and about the minority children. Conversations around this issue are likely ongoing between pool members and their friends and family as the saga unfolds in the news. By the time this is over and their children have been firmly indoctrinated in reasons why "others" don't belong at recreational venues with "them," we'll have a brand new generation of racists on our hands in PA. It is so wrong to teach children to be racists.

The pool director reported that the black kids "changed the complexion" of the pool. God is the One who "changed the complexion" of people from one race to another, so blame it on your Creator! He likes diversity.

Unfortunately, it is time for the poem AGAIN.

I am too shocked and saddened for words.

The Color of Change url left up there by Michele Q - http://www.colorofchange.org/swim/?id=1716-899165 - takes you to a petition page with a video; and there's a 2nd petition to click for.

The first is addressed to "To the staff and membership of the Valley Club;"
the second to Attorney General Eric Holder & I can only say how much I agree with both. It's the Valley Club that is guilty of racism; Creative Steps apparently didn't know that the club wouldn't allow the kids in and Valley Club has canceled their contract, which will hopefully be grounds for civil rights litigation against them!

I hope everyone will sign and send to all friends & contacts.

#1-
I was shocked and outraged to learn that the Valley Club seems to be enforcing a "whites-only" policy at your pool. It is shameful that in 2009, anywhere in America, children have been turned away from a swimming pool because of their race.

I stand together with thousands of Americans across the country in condemning the Valley Club's discrimination. We have also called on the Department of Justice to investigate whether the Valley Club violated federal civil rights laws. Together, we are sending a strong message that this kind of discrimination has no place in our society.

#2-
Dear Attorney General Eric Holder:

I was shocked and outraged to learn that the Valley Club, a swimming club outside Philadelphia, seems to be enforcing a "whites-only" policy its pool.

I'm writing to ask that the Department of Justice investigate whether the Valley Club violated federal civil rights laws when it kicked out a group of children from the Creative Steps Day Camp and canceled the camp's contract. It appears the Valley Club canceled its contract with Creative Steps Day Camp after learning that the children at the camp were largely African-American and Latino, a possible violation of section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

It is shameful that in 2009, anywhere in America, children have been turned away from a swimming pool because of their race. The Department of Justice should make it clear that such behavior has no place in our society by enforcing laws that prohibit discrimination.

Sincerely,

Are we going back in time or forward? This place needs to be picketed until they see the era of their ways. People black and white need to stand up and show these kids that they are not inferior, that they are better then these narrow minded club owners. Our future lies with these kids and they need to know that most people don't act this way.

Noted. Outraged over this! How dare this still be happening? I am dashing off some letters and emails this very day, ACLU, NAACP, and to newspapers there urging that stringent censureship of this club and its management be put into place along with some much-needed genuine apology and change. I would close the place down, restaff it with completely new people and there would be/had better be some real sensitivity and inclusiveness for all people. Thank you...I could spew more but this is a start; I will keep the rest of my powder dry for the letters I am about to fire off. Thank you, Mary, for continuing to bring us stories that point out how very much work we have to do in this country.

I don't know if they were removed from the pool solely because of the color of their skin. I do know that many years ago, my daughter attended a Junior High School that was 80% black and very overcrowded. The school board could not do anything about the overcrowding because if they removed any of the black students they would have to go to an all black school. On the other hand they could not allow the white children to go to any place else because the Junior High School would not be integrated any more without them. In addition there were many black students who hated whites because of all the things that they heard on the media about what was happening in the south. Some of them pushed my daughter down the steps in the school when they were going from one class to another. She was attacked on other occasions also. She was not the only one who went through such things. There was a girl who was a foster child (her mother had a drug problem) who was forced to carry the books of a few black girls just because she was white. The fact is in N.Y. we had always had natural integration. I also had written an editorial in my P.T.A. newsletter praising and honoring Martin Luther King before his birthday became a national holiday. The point is that many white parents who had never been prejudiced before began to fear their children attending a school that was majority black. Fortunately we got to know that there are all different kinds of blacks just as there are all different kinds of whites. Now I am happy to live in a condominium in southern Indiana that is naturally integrated. We all get along well . We also have a pool in our condominium that is shared by blacks and whites. There are some rules. Each condominium household are limited in how many guests they can have. In addition the children can only use the pool if there is a grownup with them. There are no racial problems here and many of the people who live in this condominium are originally from Kentucky (the south) and so we have made progress!

I saw this story on the evening news last night and was appalled by these bigots. It is really disturbing that this behavior will not end soon because they are teaching their children these same erroneous attitudes! The look of disappointment and sadness on those poor children's faces describing their treatment was disheartening. I felt so bad for these kids who did nothing to deserve these bigots hate. This isn't the 50's or 60's and should not be happening now. I really thought we had moved beyond this period in our history.

The action by the club was immoral. It was also illegal, and not only from the standpoint of discrimination. In most states even non-profit associations that sell space or facilities (and it was selling space), and that renege without demonstrable legitimate cause, may be liable for damages even if they return the fee.

The worst effect was on the children, and it is unforgivable.

This is an incredible story that presents a moment of realization to the country and the world: racism is alive and well in the Good Ol' USA. While it is true that it [racism] is not as open/visual--usually, as in my youth; it has not been, nor will it ever be erased. It is good that children, black, white, and hispanic can have an open discussion on this issue, right now. Children learn what they witness. Sadly, the children at the pool that day--black, white, and hispanic had an unfortunate "retro-lesson" on hate and prejudice. History/past that is forgotten, is often repeated.

It is definitely time for a history lesson.

Peace and Love to All.

Thank you, friends and Care2 members for stepping forward to speak against the racism of the patrons and management of Valley Swim Club in Philadelphia, PA. Their behavior is all the more inexcusable because it was directed at little kids at summer camp.

As Esther pointed out, such racism not only is hard on the black children, but white ones as well. Her child was targeted for racial descrimination in a majority black school by children who had learned to view whites as the enemy. Some of those black children who were thrown out of the pool will now hear much about prejudice and racism in America's past and present as the swim club incident is discussed in their homes, churches, and communities. Some of them will likely wind up forever distrusting and possibly hating white people.

The white children who are members of the Valley Swim Club are likely hearing discussions about how important it is to keep separate from black people. Some of them will grow up seeing black people as intollerably different and inferior to themselves.

This is why I thank you very much for speaking against this. I know that on many other Internet sites, many Caucasians are condemning what Valley Swim Club did to these innocent children. I hope that they and their parents notice that most Caucasians who are vocal on this issue are firmly against how they were treated and are disappointed in the swim club members and director.

I've done a Google search for
Creative Steps Day Camp, and
apparently they have no website.
I got over 775,000 hits, but nothing
that went directly to this group.

Hatred is not born into a person;
it is a learned behavior. Love is
also a learned behavior. It is especially
disgusting to read that the white children
exited the pool when the black children
entered it. The parents of these white
children are obviously teaching their children
that the color of one's skin is what matters.
When I was a child, my mother told me that we
have people of differing skin colors because
when God our Father "planted His garden", He did
not want only one color of flower.
I've remembered that my entire life, and believe
it's a beautiful way to teach a child the simple
truth, that we are all human, that skin color does
not matter a bit, and that God loves us all equally.

I was sick to my stomach when this came on Canadian news and I saw this beautiful, well spoken and articulate young boy explain what had happened, with tears running down his face. These children will NEVER forget this incident. As I stated on the petition/letter on the above link, they deserve a huge apology, an investigation, free swimming privileges for a period of time, the names of those involved in this cruel, racist decision (plus the firing of those persons)... and so many other things. Although nothing will ever be able to make up for this incredible injustice, these children and their families need to see that the HUGE majority of human beings in this world stand by them. Thank you - again - Mary, for bringing to light issues that some would rather keep hidden.

Thank you, Care2 News Network. Friends and Care2 members, thanks for pushing this article to front page. Indeed it needs to be there so we can all see that there is much work ahead still.

Blue, thanks for the beautiful poetry. Philly is special to anyone who loves American history as I do -- or I used to love the history, and believed what I read. Now, I don't know. Things changed for me after the secret arrest and wrongful death of my brother. Now I recognize that despite how far we have come, we have at least that much further to go before we become a true melting pot. We have TOO MANY LUMPS IN THE CUSTARD. But as Blue said, LOVE IS THE KEY.

And I really hope the parents and kids on both sides stop by Care2 and see what you are saying to them. You are really saying that you LOVE both sets of children -- the white ones and the black ones, and you want them all to just get along. That is what I feel. I regret that their little minds are being taught hate and fear.

Thanks for all of your comments and notes. Keep telling your friends, please. They should share their thoughts here. That way, the people in Philly will see that Care2 is a community made up of people from all over the world, and we collectively care about them.

Blessings!

Joe John, thanks for sharing your viewpoint.

I believe that what the director said to the black kid's camp director before all the controversy is the truth. The black kids changed the "complexion" and "atmosphere" of the club. They did not even allow them to stay the first day they went. Most business is transacted nowadays on Internet or the mail. He probably did not check first before selling them membership and did not expect black kids to be the ones who had bought membership.

That is what I usually believe - the first explanation - before someone catches heat for saying what they really feel. Not after they dress it up for company.

Bless you all for sharing your opinion on the children's issues.

GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE KIDS -- ANOTHER PLACE IS ALLOWING THEM TO USE THEIR POOL. Read about it in the comments at the article. Ironically, the place that is allowing them use of their pool was affiliated with a college that once upon a time was very prejudice. The college reportedly fought hard not to be integrated 40 years ago. THINGS DO CHANGE! Isn't that great?

PLEASE SIGN MY PETITION TO END MY TERRORISM AND CENSORSHIP. Many of you know what I endure because I request records on my deceased brother, Larry Neal, who was SECRETLY arrested Guantanamo-style, and returned to us dead 18 days after he went "missing." Actually, the acute mental patient was in Shelby Co. Jail in Memphis. Apparently, the police were tired of the sick man - he was harmless, but in the way.

Neither the Jail, the USDOJ, the Tenn. Governor, or the police will give us any explanation why they kept denying they had him for weeks - to ensure he died without his heart drugs is what my family assumes.

Because I ask for records constantly (for six years now) and I am denied like the folks in China, I have suffered much terrorism. I advocate against the death penalty, excessive sentencing, criminalizing mental illness, Tasers, and other things are are popular in the crime and punishment arena -- plus I ask about poor Larry, my brother, a lifelong mental patient. He went "missing" in 2003 while the Bush USDOJ was in charge, and they did not care much about human rights, I am told.

WILL YOU HELP ME TO BE SAFE? WILL YOU HELP ME ASK THE USDOJ TO DO ITS JOB?

~This is a petition for open disclosure, equal justice, and freedom from terrorism. The Petition link is below. THANKS in advance!

Six paragraphs should be below) --

I was just notified that MY PETITION AGAINST CENSORSHIP AND TERRORISM IS CENSORED. Do yourselves a favor - if The Cochran Firm is your attorney, just take your losses and head home quietly. The NWO is too much.

Frankly, this is getting tiring. They have the courts, the USDOJ, the police depts., I don't know what to say about the civil rights and civil liberties groups, except that they don't help my family. So, maybe this happened 10 years later than a time when people's civil rights counted. God loves justice, but He warned us how things would be when the Last Days arrived. So I guess we are there. We can just love our families and each other, pray for our enemies, and trust in God.

A friend said she tried to sign my petition three time and could not. So the petition may just be something for you to read and pass along. Please try to sign, and if they prevent you, you will know more about life under Big Brother. I have been "under" him for a few years now, and it is unpleasant. Check back in two weeks and see if the cyberstalker moved your name. They do that with our Dog Justice for Larry Neal Petition. One man wrote on the petition and said so. That is why I always advise to write down your number and check back. But the way things are now - even if you have proof against "connected" people, so what? They have the judges, too. If any of you can do something to restore the semblance of Democracy, please do. See her email below:

I was not able to sign the petition, I tried several times

The truth is that even if you think you forwarded it to your friends, they may prevent it. Tonight when I tried to email a friend, they removed one letter in the email address so it would not go through - not a typo - it came from my "contacts" folder. After I got the daemon mail message and saw what they had done, I put the letter back - got another daemon mail message. The "t" was gone again. I suppose they set the computers on automatic to delete some letters so that almost none of our emails go anywhere if they have a "t" in the addressee's box. Smart and wicked, right?

I suppose all of you knew but me that civil rights were over - the Constitution and Bill of Rights are history. When you get the courts, the police, and the DOJ, that is it for justice in the U.S. Mr. Holder might be scared of them. I am, too, but I used to think we had a justice system that watched your back. WRONG. So there is nothing to be done, I suppose. Next time justice is priority, it will probably be when Jesus will be on his throne. Wǎnān to you! - That's "goodnight" in Chinese.

Mary, that's not "poetry" as much as it is a song by Neil Young ... just click on the BLUE LINK (if your screen shows it blue as mine does) Neil Young - Philadelphia to listen ...

I discovered this video too late to post it in time for the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Brown vs. Board of Education. It is a sad assessment, indeed, that the races are still separate in many cases and we still haven't learned to live together in harmony. May 17, 2009- Fifty-five years after the landmark decision, race still divides some schools.

Thanks, Aba. It is never too late to post something that made the profound changes that the Brown case made. At least the Brown case changed the law. It is up to people to change their own attitudes. Some people are just haters, and they keep these attitudes going through what they teach teir children. Too bad. Thanks for posting the link!

It's beyond disgusting that such a thing can still happen...when will everyone see beyond color & see the beauty in everyone?

This is good news. It is not right to teach children hate or to mistreat children because of their race or for any reason whatsoever.

"The banning has caused so much controversy that U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) plans to launch an investigation into the discrimination claim."

Hey, I'm 73 and old enough to remember, when incidents like this one didn't even make a stir at all, would not ever have made the papers nationally and internationally! And they happened constantly, too. So, there HAS been real change. The change is, that these sorts of things are not publicly condoned any more.
Let's let these people, club owners, back off and save face! "The pool was overcrowded." HO-Kay, if you say so! They must have learned a good lesson from all this.

As far as the members' racist remarks go.... they must have learned a lesson too. If you're a racist, better to keep it to yourself. The world is no longer YOUR exclusive world! The world doesn't "belong" to the Caucasian minority {it never really did}, and you HAVE TO learn to share with all.

children because of their race, a lawyer for most of the children's
families said Monday. Michael Kuldiner said Monday that he expects
