The Californian Supreme Court has banned the sale of football boots and all other goods made from kangaroo leather, technically outlawing the Adidas Predator boot which is being promoted by new LA Galaxy signing David Beckham.

However, the statewide prohibition, which is the only one of its kind in the United States, may not last long.

Legislation allowing kangaroo-derived products made by the sporting goods maker Adidas and other companies passed the state Senate earlier this year.

The bill is widely expected to clear the Assembly smoothly and land on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk as early as September.

But, animal rights activists have been boosted by the courts decision which overturned two lower court decisions which held that California's kangaroo leather ban contradicted federal support for Australia’s wildlife management plans.

The activists argue that in the search for kangaroo leather, the hunters mistakenly shoot endangered species.

They also maintain that even the abundant species of kangaroos are killed cruelly.

"We sued because of the horrific way kangaroos are killed," said Lauren
Ornelas of Viva International Voice for Animals, which filed the lawsuit.

"We sued because of the way Adidas is snubbing their noses at California's law."

Attorney General joins activists

California Attorney General Jerry Brown also joined the lawsuit on Viva's
side on behalf of the state's Fish and Game Department.

Brown said the ruling enforced the state's power.

"The state has the authority to make determinations under the state
Endangered Species Act and can protect even species that are in far away countries like Australia," Brown said.

"When you create a market for certain animal skins, then you encourage people to kill that animal species."

History

The American state has a history of banning products made from species which it considers endangered.

In 1971, California banned the sale of products made from kangaroos and a host of other animals threatened with extinction, including elephants, sea otters and vicunas.

In 1974, the federal Fish and Wildlife agency listed three kangaroo species in question as threatened and banned the import of goods made with the marsupials' hides.

However in 1995, the U.S. agency allowed for the importation of kangaroo leather after the Australian government said the kangaroo populations had recovered.

Sound wildlife management

The Australian government, which filed court papers siding with Adidas,
said there were about 25 million of the kangaroos on the continent and hunting them is sound wildlife management.

"This issue will continue to go through the legal and legislative
processes in California, but consumers should not be intimidated by the scare tactics of those extremists who have a long term agenda of banning the use of all non-endangered animal products," Australian Trade Minister Warren Truss said after the court issued its ruling.

Adidas, who use the hides to make the popular Predator boots, the biggest industrial customer of kangaroo leather.

The sporting goods giant has spent $435,000 in lobbying efforts since 2003, the first year legislation was introduced to repeal the kangaroo ban.

But last year, Beckham, who receives millions of dollars in endorsements from Adidas, announced his Predator boots would be made of synthetic leather instead of kangaroo hide.

Please note: THINGS ARE NOT LOOKING GOOD!

"Legislation allowing kangaroo-derived products made by the sporting goods maker Adidas and other companies passed the state Senate earlier this year. The bill is widely expected to clear the Assembly smoothly and land on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk as early as September."

What do you want to bet ADIDAS and other manufacturers had a major part in writing that legislation??!!!!!

We MUST be vigilant in shifting the societal paradigm away from animals as "property" before true animal rights will be realized!

Sorry, but I think we are celebrating way too early. As noted above by Melanie, the ban probably won't last very long because

"legislation allowing kangaroo-derived products made by the sporting goods maker Adidas and other companies passed the state Senate earlier this year. The bill is widely expected to clear the Assembly...

So a victory short of gertting the ban reinstated and legislation rewritten is but a hollow one, to be sure!! Wouldn't it be nice to get some of those CA celebs who are pro-animals to kick up their heels!!!
