The breeding of dogs cats and many other small crestures to service the pet trade is an absolute disgrace and that comment is directed at the so called responsible breeders so you will forgive me for not ranting with a collection of innapropriate expletives on how I feel about puppy and cat mills! Defra and various bodies in the UK are about as much use as the proverbail chocolate fireguard in preventing these sorts of cruelty and exploitation of animals. I once had a neighbour who boasted about smuggling reptiles spiders and birds into the UK to sell in his wholesale pet supply business (thankfully now gone) all subject to Defra approval and local authority licencing. Some of these idiots who trade in animals abused in this way are violent, anti law individuals who don't give a damn about animal welfare just the almighty dollar. Some indication of the nefarious nature can be gleaned from the fact that they tend to operate in remote rural parts of Wales, Ireland etc. away from prying eyes and the noise and smell is covered by the proximity of normal animal farming smells and noise to any casual observer! If you must buy an animal from a pet shop then insist on a source for the animal if they can't or wont give it then walk away and get some investigation going as to why not. Chances are it has been imported from Ireland or transported from Wales to the UK from a puppy or cat farm but that can equally apply to any small animal. Simple answer is not to buy from pet stores period, Shelters at the moment all over the UK are bursting with cats, dogs, kittens, puppies, hamsters, ferrets, rats, mice, rabbits, gunieau pigs etc not to mention birds and reptiles. So get one from a shelter. Every time an animal is purchased at a pet store the one in the shelter is going to be in there longer or possibly killed as surplus and unwanted! Note I have stoppd using euphamisms such as euthanasia for killing! Why do we have to use terms such as, euthanasia, put to sleep, destroy, put down, dispatch, or even slaughter when referring to the enforced death of an animal. Is it that we don't want to face the reality of what is done?
