Well, this is why no society can afford to teach and tolerate and reward the sanctioned cruelty we see in bull fights and bull burnings and all the other really sadistic and brutal Spanish holidays and celebrations. I hope we manage to get this stuff stopped and I hope the owners of this poor animal resist the pressure and fight for her until the end. The brutal criminals who did this much be brought to justice or we'll just see lots more of this in the future - cruelty is never self-curing or self-limiting, it feeds on itself and escalates. Even if the owners of this donkey were to withdraw charges, this case should be prosecuted. In most civilized societies, this is a CRIME. If the Spanish government lets this go, then their behaviour is worse than that of those 17 years olds. It is this very 'tradition' of animal abuse the Spainish government has repeatedly defended -- from bullfighting to hurling goats from rooftops at festivals -- that has produced the mentality seen in these teenagers. These young boys believe that they are entitled to treat an animal this way -- their elders have taught them no different. The Spainish government is reaping the seeds its sown.

For any of them to feel remorse or shame requires some intelligence and it is obvious that no one there has any at all. I suggested in my letter that they were abusing the wrong animals. The ones that deserve the abuse are the two legged HUMANS! It is also sadly obvious that no one in Spain believs in God or religion in general. No one who really believes in God could do what they do to His helpless little creatures. Wow, can you imagine how proud those parents must be of their off-spring? This is my letter. I've taken into account the news in Spanish AND the comments people sent. You can use it if you want, I think that it's more appropiated than the one in the site because I ask to the community as a whole to make educational projects in order to change these traditions -the "quintos"-

Con horror y repugnancia he leido las noticias sobre la cruel tortura y matanza de una burra por parte de un grupo de adolescentes en el marco de las celebraciones de "los quintos". Este pico de violencia contra animales indefensos no sería meramente un hecho de vandalismo: una tradición inexplicable e inaceptable en nuestros días sirve como aval para este tipo de conductas monstruosas que me hacen avergonzar de mis ancestros españoles.

Más allá del castigo ejemplar que estos jóvenes merecen y que deberían ser extensivos a sus padres teniendo en cuenta su responsabilidad por los actos de sus hijos (que descuento será aplicado de acuerdo a las leyes españolas) existe una responsabilidad de las autoridades y de la comunidad toda en la erradicación de costumbres y tradiciones que consisten en el daño de seres sin defensa alguna por el mero placer de verlos sufrir. The high animal cruelty in Spain is reaching Olympic status. They are definately competing with the Asian cruelty. The fact that these are youngsters that enjoy this kind of "sport". Governments are unable and ignorant detecting the reality in animal abuse and dont do anything about it. apparently the killing of donkeys is an annual event in that country. How do you do that to a living being? see below for more "festivals" and note they usually have a patron saint attached to them. one would think that the church would fight to stop this degenerate behaviour but apparently turn a blind eye. "depravity in the name of culture"

Spaniards light the horns of a bull on fire and laugh at his torment while exploding firecrackers. They wrestle ponies to the ground and cut off their manes and tails. They suspend pigeons and squirrels in pots that they pelt with stones until the animals fall. They bury birds with their heads sticking up in order to decapitate them with swords. They throw ducks with clipped wings into the sea so that swimmers can rip them apart in tug-of-war contests. They grease pigs for catching contests that badly maul the animals. They string geese up by their feet and wrench their heads off.

Some fiestas are particularly infamous, such as the goat fiesta of Manganeses de la Polyorosa where villagers throw a goat from a church (!) tower. If the goat survives, it is drowned in the town fountain. Every year in the village of Villanueve de la Vera, drunken revelers drag a donkey into the streets and beat it to a bloody pulp. The "running of the bulls" in Pamplona is held every July. Each day for a week, six terrified fighting bulls are set loose in the cobbled streets as thousands of mindless daredevils try to dodge their deadly horns. The party ends with the brutal killing of the bulls. Lars K. that is what I was thinking when I posted my comment. I thought that this seems to be a culture that is passed on from generation to generation and taught to be the normal thing to do. I realize that not all Spaniards think like that but it seems that too many do. Those Spaniards that don't think that way have to try to do something to stop this.

In order to protest against such travesty we must look at what it is that we are trying to change. It is difficult to look at pictures of animal torture and undercover videos but I do it over and over again. This fills me with anger and a lust for revenge. However, we must all remember that Spain is a country which allows, in the name of entertainment, the brutal torture and killing of countless bulls in the bull fighting rings.

Animal cruelty is endemic in Spanish society and whilst I agree that these thugs must be bought to justice and receive the harshest possible sentence, we must not forget all the other animals abused and tortured in Spain.

I, for one, have been writing to the Spanish Government for years. I have also been writing to my MEP's and if enough people did the same, the message might begin to get through.

is convinced that it is the guilt of the parents of those sick animal torture terrorists that they are this way. If I would take such an idea serious, it would be the consequence out of this, that these sadists are NOT guilty, and the parents are to be blamed. This is totally NONSENSE! I do not know how much influence Lars has on his own life and own decisions to get such an idea. But to blame always the others for the own mistakes is something that little children do but not grown up people who are conscious. What a despicable act of cowardice. These incurably sick subhumans should be sterilized immediately so they can never spread their sickness to their offspring. Until the Spanish government acknowledges the heinous nature of these crimes against animals and increases penalties to fit them, these, and other, jerks will get off with minimal punishment. Perhaps to get the attention of the authorities, a boycott of all products and tourism should be implemented against any country that allows its citizens to engage in barbaric practices involving animals without fear of significant reprimand. I love Spanish-language music and often purchase songs from natives of Spain. Perhaps no longer.

A donkey has been brutally murdered by teenagers in the village of Torreorgaz in the Spanish region of Extremadura. The news has shocked the Sidmouth-based Donkey Sanctuary and its Spanish counterpart now plans to take full legal action against the culprits.

El Refugio del Burrito, based in Fuente de Piedra is a Spanish registered charity, and part of the UK-based Donkey Sanctuary, dedicated to the care and protection of donkeys and mules.

Staff at the refuge were devastated to hear how a 20-year old female donkey died in the early hours of Saturday 31st October after being repeatedly kicked, and more disturbingly for having objects inserted into its bodily orifices causing great internal damage, which then led to a fatal heart attack.

Ivan Salvia, General Manager at El Refugio Del Burrito says: “This cruel act is incomprehensible and we hope to find justice for the poor donkey concerned. The owner is just as devastated as we are.”

El Refugio del Burrito now plans to lodge an official condemnation to the local government of Extremadura to start the legal proceedings. The charity also hopes to gather support from the general public to campaign for animal protection laws to be fully enforced in future.

Thanks Simone, I have noted this and sent my letter as you asked. I hope it will do some good. I know in Ireland laws need to stricter on animal torture and abuse also. There needs to be zero tolerance in fact. I an an assistant in a class of 9 year olds and when I hear them say they go hunting with their Dad's it makes me so angry. I do everything I can to counteract it when I can and have put picures and poems regarding KIndness To Animals up all around the school. Maybe it will help. May God forgive them because I can't.

I believe very young children are a product of their parents. As we mature we become concious of our own being. At 17 years old, we are completely concious of our own being and are responsible for our own actions. Our parents nor anyone else is to blame. Becoming a product of our environment is avoidable if we have any intelligence. These perverts are just sadistic and no one else is to blame but their own lack of intelligence and compassion.
