Denmark is known for its general civility and high standard of living. However, teens from the Faroe Islands in Denmark engage in a brutal dolphin slaughter that may turn some heads. Considered a rite of passage, this video captures a blood-soaked ritual

This is absolutely disgraceful. As someone who is of part Scandinavian ancestry, I feel that I have even more of a right to condemn this medieval barbarity! Shame on Denmark and shame on Sweden for killing wolves this year!

I really do wonder why this horrific practice is simply not obviously sick and twisted to everyone. Really?

I was wondering the same thing as Brooke. Why are the people of Denmark not outraged? If I had a son and caught him doing this... I can't say what I would do but I guarentee no child of mine would be participating in this pointless brutality and getting away with it as 'rite of passage' hogwash! Killing is killing this is disgusting!

The people of Denmark aren't outradeg,as they are brought up with this "heritage"
It's actually the Faroe Island who does these killings. It's part of Denmark, but fully on their own and their own counsels.
Denmark will not ban this slaughter. Not in the near future anyway.
These kids are brought up with these killings, thinking it will make them a real man,and providing for their family.Every year more and more woman participate in these slaughters too.
They claim the whales are killed really fast, but video's show otherwise. It's is a well organised hunt, they claim. But i've seen so many video's about this,it seems very wild to me.
My heart cries that this is still going on.And i'm starting to believe we can never stop this.Only oppose it

ah gag....couldn't watch this....and I always thought the Danes the most civilized of all peoples...I love Denmark...and I understand this is the Faroe Islands...but this is too close to Denmark to not be complicit in these brutal killings...and Dolphins of all creatures...they trust humans...how horrid all around.!
Rite of passage...killing? Since when in the 2000's should killing be a rite of passage? Shouldn't a passage to manhood be something totally opposite of killing? Saving? Saving creatures who are at the mercy of our brutal humanness and our brutal natures?? Save something! That is a real man!

If parents raise their children with this "tradition" , the children will teach the same thing to their children later. It is a false circle and someone has to break it!

We must keep building up more pressure against these cruel practices. Eating animals is one thing - the manner of their killing is quite a different matter, especially when done in the name of "ritual" or "rites of passage" for so-called manhood.

Wednesday February 3, 2010, 12:37 pm
-didn't watch the video-the picture is quite enough. I agree with a lot of the comments already made-REAL men would want to save and nurture something; also in this day and age, with the knowledge of wildlife and their habitats hanging in the balance, this is really shocking. Stuff like this should NEVER be any right of passage. I hope someone is in the process of ending this no matter what country has authority over this and these ignorant, indifferent fools!

Disgusting what can we do to stop this? Those poor helpless creatures! They are not making men or adults out of these teens they are teaching and condoning violence and brutality!!!! This is a heartbreaker to watch, let me know what we have to do to Stop this now before another slaughter takes place!!!!

Marilyn K. (43)
Wednesday February 3, 2010, 12:40 pm
The rite of passage to what? Being a murderer? Killing of any animals in any country should not be a "Rite of Passage to anything"! This is not only animal cruelty but a major crime to kill for the sake of killing. People who encourage this activity or don't see this leading to more abnormal behavior which will effect society have to be re-educated as to the meaning of life.

'You've Got To Be Carefully Taught' --is what jumps into my mind. These young people were once children watching adults doing this very thing- and on and on it goes..but this is such large-scale violence that illustrates that we are not worthy to have dominion over anything that walks or crawls or flies or swims! These
people remind me that our evolution is incomplete, that until we treat our creatures with respect--we will never
be able to ascend to the heavens and walk with the creator. No matter how they attempt to justify this or parse their words-- they suck!

OMG! OMG! OMG! What the hell?!?! This is the 21st Century, isn't it? I thought young men having to make a rite of passage died out 200 years ago, for God's sake. I truly wish these people could have their bodies ripped apart with a damn bullhook just to see what they hell they are doing to these loving, sweet, defenseless creatures. What in the name of God is wrong with human beings? My sincere prayer every day of my life is that God will come down and strike all these people down and get them out of the human race. Despicable. Disgusting.

hORRIFYING - but then, we allow unthinkable cruelty to billions of animals in industrial animal production, in laboratories and in your community's animal "shelter" - killing animals, letting them suffer - government funded, citizen condoned. Witness, speak and demand justice and freedom for animals.

I couldn't go to the site. Seen enough on dolphin slaughter, and it brings me to tears for quite a while afterwards. It's barbaric, to say the LEAST. I know, let's make it a "rite of passage" for all the people who love these wonderous creatures to "slaughter" all the teens over there doing this!!! Turn about is fair play. WAIT, we can't do that though, it's called "MURDER" if we do something like that. These teens have no morals, obviously, and neither do ANY of the island folk if they let this SICK ritual continue.

Just want to point out a small but important detail - that Denmark has really nothing to do with this. The Faroe Islands are a sovereign, self-governing territory in the North Sea, and even though the islands are formally subject to the Danish crown and the Danish queen, Denmark has got no say in the interior politics of the Faroe Islands, no more than any other state has. So, it's the Faroe Islands and the Faroese people and parliament who should have all the bashing for these atrocitiies, not Denmark or the Danes. A thing like this would never, ever happen in the actual Denmark!

That being said, I urge the Faroese people to stop these barbaric massacres NOW!!! It's an awful atrocitiy, the Faroese should all be ashamed, and we should all boycott these islands until they stop this!

This is vulgar. I could not watch the video I'm sorry. Just the thought of killing a dolphin, a being with as much soul as humans have, its beyond believe such a thinking and civil country could do such an act and by their young people. People who should be by their age, more enlightened with all the education they have. There are no words to describe such sadness this action causes. Its as if a bit of light of the world is being cut short.

A few facts.
This is not taking place in Denmark, The Faroe Islands are self-governing, own parlament, own laws, own language.
AND THEY ARE VERY PROUD OF NOT BEING DANISH.
AND WE DANES A VERY PROUD WE ARE NOT FROM THE FAROE ISLANDS, WE HATE WHALING !!
IN DENMARK WHALING IS ILLEGAL !!!!
A simple search on the internet, wiki ect. will provide You with all facts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_the_Faroe_Islands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands

Now a other fact Look at the leftcorner in the photos in the video. lail-alsahara.

Some might remember the Muhammed drawings a couple of years ago, as a response arabic organizations started several smear campaigns, directed against danish citizens in general, one of these was this Whaling story.
The story it self has a few facts right, and a lot of fake facts. If You search the net for internet hoax, you wil find this story again and again.
Most smear storys has stopped years ago, even the lail-alsahara removed this story from their
homepage after 14 days, but since the story keeps on circulating, and used in all kinds of campaigns, at the moment it is (as you might have read, under the article) a vegan campaign agains eating meat.

I keep on wondering what the story will be used for next.

I*M TIERED OF BEING COMPARED WITH PEOPLE FROM THE FAROE ISLANDS !!!!

Thanks.

Rite of Passage..........hmmmmm. Perhaps this rite of passage could be directed to something more productive and less destructive such as a Vision Quest or doing a week of Acts of Kindness for the Faroe community, maybe they could even do Acts of Kindness outside their own community - there is a whole big world of Animals and Humans that could use some kindness and compassion.

I couldn't watch the movie and I don't understand the need to kill animals for a ritual act. But then this is not my culture. I have no right to judge others I only hope we can bring this dolphin killing to the front and expose it for what it is and hopefully the group of people responsible for these acts will note it and come up with another way.

disgusting

what is wrong with so many countries that allow the horror and torture and killing of animals for festivals. rites of passage. entertainment the list goes on. how disgustingly barbaric.

what makes a person an adult by killing an dolphin? it isnt like the dolphin is vivious or going to be a threat to anyone. it is a dolphin.

OMG THESE POEPLE ARE SUCH BARBARIANS

Merv Gillespie (30)
Wednesday February 3, 2010, 7:25 pm

Just to clarify a point there appears to be some confusion over.

“The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. Over the years, the Faroese have been granted control of most matters. Some areas still remain the responsibility of Denmark, such as military defence, foreign affairs and LAW.” (my emphasis)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands

Therefore the Danish government is responsible and does have the power to stop this barbaric practice.

Surely with laws against whaling in Denmark as Jan Billy Pedersen cited earlier these same laws could be applied to the Faroese.

The Faroe Islands is dependent on Demark for 20% of its annual revenue which is a handy bargaining chip if the Danes really wanted to enforce a change away from this totally unnecessary, unjustifiable by any cultural argument, utter cruelty.

I had these pictures in my Hotmail account until it got hacked but i did send them to a friend of care2 who sent them on to her friends and the pics I sent her are exactly the same pics as in this video. I also think it's disgraceful but what can we do right now apart from stopping to go to these Islands? As I think they also depend heavily on the tourists who come every year. THAT is what we've got to try and stop if we can? I signed all the petitions which came after this was brought in the open and was glad I could do, I also thank Simone for bringing this in the open once again.

All around the world these Rites of passage exist one way or another. Pamplona's fiesta in Spain ,Fiesta de la Candelaria in Mèxico, the horse race in Sienna, Italy where they cut cock`s throaths out of pure amussement, bullfights cockfights, dogfights among hundreds of brutal acts commited by ignorant and senseless individuals some times even to "honor" their "saints". As long as their authorities accept it, the only thing we can do is to raise our voices to demand them to stop these crimes against the innocent. Let`s keep doing it !!!! Thank you Simone.

Savage…. it’s sad to say that, in this day and age, the world is still full of savage, uncaring and ignorant people. There are also others on earth like the people in the Faroe Islands. How do we deal with them?

We are in a race to save our beautiful planet. Those of us who want to enjoy, to connect with and to preserve our natural environment are pitted against those who see the world in a different light. They see the world as a place only to be harnessed and exploited for use. They are not connected to modern reality and they are still clinging to their barbaric past behaving like Neanderthals.

However disgusting, these are not dolphins people, they are pilot whales. This clip is about 3-4 years old and I have seen it many times. Indeed, this is a local Faroe Islands ritual that takes place once a year and is participated by the entire family from infants to watch up to grand parents and all ages in between.

Also true when first published, Greenpeace and others such as the Danish Government are reluctant to make them change this as it is a ritual, in other words, a sacrifical act based on their beliefs, whatever that may be.

After the slaughter, the whales are processed for consumption. What most of us do not understand is why they do as pilot whales have the highest level of mercury in them, far more then dolphins. As a result, quite a few Faroe inhabitants have birth defects and associated diseases but they seem not to care about that too much. It's a bit like Voodoo but different.

Religion, such a killer!

THIS IS A SICK BARBARIC RITUAL. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THIS KIND OF "RITE OF PASSAGE" IS CONDONED. WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO EXPLAIN THE JUSTIFICATION BETWEEN THE ACT OF SACRIFICING THE PILOT WHALE AND BECOMING A MAN? I THINK IN THIS DAY AND AGE ,THE YOUNG MAN KNOWS WHEN HE'S BECOME A MAN WITHOUT THE AUTROCIOUS SLAUGHTERING OF INNOCENT CREATURES.

I can't bring myself to watch the video. I agree with all the comments which call for a rite of passage that involves protection, not savagery. I understand that we can not completely judge other cultures' rituals but, from reading the comments of the video viewers, this sounds like outright cruel and inhumane killing... "slaughter" as the title of the article says. I believe we can in that case stand up and make a judgment that this is wrong. If proving maturity is necessary in that culture, it should be done in a manner that will build upon the good of one's spirit.

Well you pretty much said what i already posted earlier.
It's the Faroe Island who does the killings.
But hm...I have spoken to Danish men,who go to the Faroe to participate in these slaughters every single year.
So Denmark does particiapte in some way,and they don't oppose it.
I have a man from the Faroes island on my list on Facebook, and he provides me with info about this, and let me say this : It's even worse than we all know
