An Arctic fossil find suggests that polar bears may have come into existence as a result of brown bears' battle for survival against climate change during the last ice age.

Yes, it is possible to withstand a warm climate but at a great cost. The polar bears of 115 000/130 000 may have survived due to a marginal number of them adapting to a brief warm period. This is no excuse for warming our climate now as these bears (and other willdlife) may fair less fortunately this time. Look what happened to the wholly mammoth and wholly rhinocerous for a clear example. Thank you Simone, this is a important piece of info. Noté

Very interesting. Proves why they can interbreed.

Interesting article. Thanks Simone.
if Polar Bears did survive global warming before, that's great news.
However, the bad news is that millions of years ago the Polar Bears didn't have to contend with humans.
So, although they may be able to survive the new global warming, can they survive the humans??

I also agree with Beth P. I hope the Polar bears win the battle against humans.

While evolutionary change can be a positive way for living things to adapt to variable conditions, more sudden changes can outpace evolution and end up killing off anything unable to adapt that quickly.
