Belgium Plans to Neuter Most Cats as Feline Population Explodes

The Belgian government has come up with a radical way to deal with the burgeoning cat population - to sterilise all but a select few of the animals within five years. If it is passed into law, the country will embark on a phased neutering of all cats

Good for Belgium! There are way too many homeless cats out there because irresponsible people don't have their pets neutered/spayed.

Interesting. The country only has 37,000 estimated stray cats out of a population of 1.7million. That's pretty god. I admit I had mixed feelings about entering a whole country of cats but if there is such a problem, more power to them.

Much as I love cats, I have to admit that this is the responsible thing to do. Unwanted kittens are not just a problem to those who own their mothers, but if they are dumped because homes cannot be found for them, their lives are likely to be 'nasty, brutish and short', full of struggle and suffering. I have seen enough documentary programmes on Animal Planet about 'cat hoarders', to know what can happen, when cats are not neutered.
