Casimiro, a lion kept at the Parque Zoológico La Guaricha in Maturin, died in agony last week. Photographs taken prior to his death show a broken lion, covered in open sores and rotting away in a filthy pen

Why didn't someone help him??? What kind of a place or caretakers does this zoo have. This zoo needs to BE SHUT DOWN, and the caretakers need to be help accountable for this.
I cannot tell you how how angry and sad this makes me. He is in a better place.

How many people witnessed this wretched lion's slow, lingering agony, this horrific dying, agonizing millimeter by painful millimeter?

Kathy P. - I concur. The criminally negligent caretakers working at this zoo, this death camp, need to be prosecuted for aggravated animal cruelty, each and every one of them! As for the Director of this zoo, he should be prosecuted for premeditated murder of an innocent, helpless animal!

Precious soul, I do hope you are now an angel, in a better world than this one!

I am sick to the heart and I have tears in my eyes after seeing the close-up of the photo above. Sweet, precious, innocent soul; MURDERED!!! Just left to ROT AWAY, like so much garbage! Unbelievable! How many people saw this lion in this pitiful state of living decay? Hmmm???

Disgusting, really. I have no problems with zoos that care of their animals but there are circuses with more humane conditions than shown above. The zoos has no business acquiring any more lions until they find a way to properly care for them. If anything they should be under investigation for what has already occurred.

Poor Casimiro! What evil has he done to humanity to be punished so stupid? No rational or irrational animal should be treated so cruelly and stupidly. Zoos must serve to preserve the species, offering them the same environment as their natural habitat where people can see closer to the wonder created by God ... the animal kingdom, which I think is sometimes smarter than the kingdom of man.

This is incomprehensible to anyone with a shred of compassion. The people responsible for this need to suffer the way this animal was left to suffer. I might actually believe in a god if I thought that people got what they actually deserved.

Ther is NO DAMM reason that this poor lion should have had to suffer like this. These SORRY ASS people should be locked in one of the cages and let them starve to death. And they should have to suffer just like this poor lion did. What in the world is wrong with people these days? If they did not want to feed the lion, WHY didn't they let somebody else take care of him? ASSHOLES!!!!!!!

If you do visit zoos or whatever, and you see something amiss...dang!- take a picture, e-mail it around! Sooner or later, someone (if not you) will put pressure on the zoo to correct it. Picture= a thousand words. During the Gulf Spill, BP and Fish and Wildlife went nuts when people started to photo the dead wildlife. What used to be the power of the press is now the power of the camera and e-mail! Know anyone in Venezuela? Send them the lion picture! Maybe this is a hick town there, but zoos bring tourists...tourist money has clout! Get them to clean up their act.

I'm truly shaking from the welling anger I feel seing this picture. This is totally unacceptable! This zoo MUST BE SHUT DOWN and the so called "caretakers" be stuck in the same "habitat" and given the same treatment (or lack thereof) until they suffer the exact same fate. DAMMIT PEOPLE! How can this be allowed? I'm just sick and disgusted by the human race and its' blatant disregard for animal life. This poor lion should have lived and died in his natural habitat where Mother Nature intended. This is an embarrassment and a disgrace to the human race. SHAME SHAME SHAME! Zoos need to be shut down forever!

it is sad that a country like venezuela which has become an inspiration like cuba who,s medicine and education systems are now the best in the world, that now has fallen down in the wild life department and chavez should know that to have any credibility or respect like putin of russia who is trying to save the sibirian tigers,he will now have to show that all life is sacred.

Signed, and noted. I have serious questions about this. Everyone is saying how cruel and heartless, ertc. for the zoo to allow such cruelty to happen. The poor animal was out on display, as it were. Where were all the outraged zoo visitors who reported it, to the zoo, and to the media and authorities if necessary? Someone took that photo. Did he call the media? There was not ONE zoo caretaker who had a heart? No one seems to have asked these questions. Why not? What happened to this lion? He didn't get in this condition, didn't die overnight. Never mind not allowing it to acquire more lions, until these questions about THIS lion's treatment and death are answered, it should be closed. And to those who did nothing- you are also guilty of his miserable death. Remember him , as he hoped in vain for the only beings he knew to help him.
