Animal icons are not new to India or to conservation history. The tiger was national animal, alone on a pedestal from 1973 on, till earlier this year, when the Gangetic dolphin became the national aquatic animal. That the peacock is the national bird is

To cherish our wildlife and try to create an idea that our animals are precious and worth saving is what we would hope from having animal icons. If it leads to further persecution of our wildlife, then we have to rethink and redouble our efforts.

Noted. Thank you for sharing. We should not have to make icons of animals to preserve them. This should be done out of love and respect for wildlife. But if this is what it takes to save them, then let`s try what ever works.

We should not have to make animal icons but does this not elevate how SOME people feel about them? I think there should be more public emphasis on what Kathy said as well, it should be done out of love and respect. I believe there should be more done by the media to promote these animals rather than promoting money money money orientiated things.

We've always had animal icons. Doesn't stop people from eating them, shooting them, abusing them, etc. I agree with Catherine T. Way too many humans on this planet who are only out for themselves. We need more animals and far fewer humans.

Why is it so hard to secure respect and reverence for the spectacular wildlife our world has to offer? I agree that less people, more animals would help us regain some form of homeostatis. I don't understand how a human mind can be anything but humbled by the gracefulness of animal life.
