ACTION ALERT: Save Oregon's Stuggling Wolf Population! PLEASE SIGN !

Animals  (tags: oregon wolves, maglined, slaughtered massacred, governor, protection, conservation, survival )

In 2008, wolves established the first Oregon wolf pack in more than 60 years with formation of the Imnaha pack. Since then two other packs have established. But it hasn't been smooth sailing for Oregon's wolves.

I signed it , but its very sad that we need to sign petitions like this almost everyday, and its all because some people say that these animals get in their way, even though they were here before us!!

I live close enough to them that I get to read about what is going on fairly regularly. Another calf was killed last week, and even though the collared male wasn't nearby, they still want to kill him and his uncollared male offspring. There are 4 remaining wolves right now. To me, that is not a pack, it is a family, and they would be killing off the family, as there is little chance Mom and her other pup could survive the Winter. My opinions aren't popular where I live, but it seems we have many more cows than wolves. Cows aren't a native species, and all humans are doing is giving predators an easy meal, then whining about it. (Mountain lions are also fair game-they actually reminded hunters on the radio of that...) I'll shut up now.

Throughout human history weve (humans) have arrogantly encroached on wildlife habitat, killing wahtever was in our way. Some species have been wiped out completely, many heve been brough to the brink of extinction and measures were needed in order to save them. The cycle repeats itself. Were never wise enough to try and coexist together, to respect their right to existence. Its easier to kill them off just because we can. This is very sad and degrading for humanity. When we need to justify our abominable actions, we spread the fairy tales about demonic wolves nearly wiping out whole cattle herds. But the statistics CLEARLY show that livestock deaths due to wolf attack are few and far between - somewhere around 0, 23% !!! of the total annual livestock losses in 2010 (Department of Agricultural report http://howlingforjustice.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/wolves-scapegoated-less-than-1-of-cattle-killed-by-native-carnivores-and-domestic-dogs/ ). While I do realize that no matter how low the percentage is, it still means a real and difficulut loss to a particular farmer farmer, WHAT in the hell gives us the right to put our cattle before wolves? When the heck do we STOP being so arrogant ??

In my opinion, 14 (or 21) wolves can hardly pose a serious threat to cows; moreover, there are nonviolent means of protecting cows from potential attacks. If it is not farmers who blame wolves for losing a couple of cows, there come hunters who claim wolves reduce populations of animals that are natural prey for wolves but valuable game for hunters. If neither of this is the case, people say wolves are threatening to them. In other words, when it comes to killings of wolves, there is always a pretext at hand.

With shrinking habitats, dwindling numbers, and less possibilities of finding food, wild animals come closer to the vast land that has been usurped by humans. If their habitat was left undisturbed and they had enough natural prey or food, they would likely not do so or they would do so less frequently. Thus our co-existence with them could become less conflicting.

I disagree with the killing of wolves. They belong to nature, as any other species does. People should learn to co-exist peacefully with animals--an art that they often lack, but that is so important. It is not our task here to manage anything natural; nature is the higher power we ourselves are part of. This killing of wolves is not our self-defense or struggle for survival; it is an act of deadly violence that is preventable in most cases and as such can hardly be justifiable.
