Dear Ms Drabic,

On behalf of Mr Adrian Pederick MP JP, I would like to thank you for your email received by Mr Steven Marshall MP, relating to Rodeos in South Australia and your concerns regarding animal welfare.

The Liberal Party of South Australia regards animal welfare as a high priority and is committed to policies that support that ideal.

Following consultation, rodeo associations throughout Australia operate along strict guidelines in line with State and Commonwealth regulations which have been established to prevent cruelty and minimize the impacts on the welfare of rodeo animals and livestock. Standards under the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS) allow for effective co-regulation between industry and animal welfare agencies to ensure animal welfare at all rodeos in Australia and to support rules designed to prevent cruelty to animals. The standards define the respective responsibilities of everyone involved in conducting rodeos. This includes compliance with legislation relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals and following the national, Model Codes of Practice for the Welfare of Animals. Under the AAWS, rodeo associations are to monitor compliance with the standards and enforce them as required.

Rodeos in South Australia are currently regulated under the Animal Welfare Regulations 2000 which is legislated under the Animal Welfare Act 1985. For your information Part 4, Section 19: of use and care of rodeo animals, outlines the regulations to control animal welfare at Rodeos held in SA. For Rodeos held in SA, Animal maturity, weight and size are specified and controlled and I have attached a copy of the Animal Welfare Regulations 2000 for your perusal.

I thank you for taking the time to raise this issue.

Kind regards Kaitlin
