I am a strong proponent for harsh penalties for animal abusers. This is one case I may take a bit of an exception though.

This woman was/is seriously mentally ill, a diagnosed schizophrenic. She's been of her meeds for several months and her friends and family knew this. They knew she had been acting strangely.

By all accounts, when she was on her meds, she spoiled, cosseted and pampered this dog, treated him like a child and took him every where with her. She sincerely loved him.

I am not saying she is without blame, but she is sick and needs to be somewhere that she can be looked after and not placed in a situation where she can hurt herself or any other living creature.

I feel much of the blame for this whole thing rests on the shoulders of those who knew her, knew she was sick, knew she was off her meds and acting strange and did nothing about it. This woman was not in a position to take full responsibilty for herself but she has family and they should have. This horrific thing could have been avoided.

I feel great hurt and anger but this is one time that it should be directed, not at the abuser, but at those who allowed her to be in the situation she was in. She does need to be locked away but in her case, prison is not the answer. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the others who should have taken responsibilty for her charged in this case though.
