For all of our all lives, we the3 99% have had someone representing out interests. They are the members of America’s Labor Unions. Even if you have never been in a union, gains made by unions for their workers have translated to most workers, including the 40 hour week, paid vacations, sick leave and higher wages.

Unions are about a simple proposition: By joining together, working women and men gain strength in numbers so they can have a voice at work about what they care about. They negotiate a contract with their employer for things like a fair and safe workplace, better wages, a secure retirement and family-friendly policies such as paid sick leave and scheduling hours. They have a voice in how their jobs get done, creating a more stable, productive workforce that provides better services and products. Always adapting to the challenges of our nation’s evolving workforce, unions are meeting the needs of workers in today’s flexible and nontraditional work environments. Because no matter what type of job workers are in, by building power in unions, they can speak out for fairness for all working people in their communities and create better standards and a strong middle class across the country.- Borrowed from AFL-CIO web site and it rings true especially today!

every American needs to do all they can to make sure uniions are there. It's the only protection from corporations and bosses, so they can at least bargin for rights and a decent pay.

If repub-cons gain control, we will go back to $2.00/hour with no rights. Serfs, or peasansts slaving for the UNITED CORPORATIONS OF AMERCIA. And they are gaining with all the billions they can secretly give to the con men (republicans) running this scam on the United States.

PEOPLE...........WAKE UP.....STAND UP..........SHOUT OUT. or we lose everything.

I can't dispute, nor do I want to, all the gains that labour unions have brought to the workplace, union or not.

Here in BC, the teachers and the Province have been at lagerheads --- the teachers knew before the end of June 2011 that they would have problems negotiating a new contract. September came and no contract so the teachers didn't strike, but they did withhold certain administrative services like after school sports and report cards. We are now into the seventh month of the school year and the talks have broken down yet again and the government is tabling back to work legislation. Today, students from many areas descended on the offices of Members of the Legislative Assembly in support of teachers. Kids are learning how to speak up, how to join in solidarity --- again, different context, but it is the 99% vs the 1%.

It would be great if unions were no longer needed, but as long as there are greedy corporations or governments willing to sell their souls for a few shekels, then unions will be necessary.

Sadly, Southern states are right to work states. They despise Unions and have butchered those who have struggled to bring Unions in. The Congress, political leaders from these states have always been and continue to be a major blocks to It amazes me that Unionss who would vastly improve the lives of everyone...yet even the slowest and the lowest are robots trained by their preachers and business bosses to consider unions as sources for the commeenists.

My hubby belonged to the Sheet Metal Union for 30+ years, still does but now as a retiree. I cannot even begin to tell you how much better our life is that that of a close friend who moved to Arizona, another non-union state, and is now retired. The comparisons are too many to mention and he admits it was a huge mistake on his part to ever move to a non-union state. Of course the land of big corporations are against unions, it would give them less money for their outrageous bonuses.

Without Unions, workers would be treated as little more than widgets, just soulless cogs to have every ounce of energy and productivity in pursuit of profit. Unions stand for protecting the human being.

Everything we Thought was done & law in the 70′s is now Again up for grabs from RepubliCONs working for the 1%. Union busting has been a vital part of their oppression since day one.

I wish schools taught more about the history of unions. Unions are an important expression of the free market, and it is vital that their rights be protected, as they serve as a check on employers. Employees only have power en masse. So, it is vital they be allowed to organize and try to ensure fair and decent treatment. So many abuses of employees have been successfully dealt with by unions.

It's outrageous that the right wing has so maligned the unions, that lots of people who really know nothing about them have a negative knee-jerk reaction to even the mention of unions. The right has done a great divide and conquer strategy on workers, and many people are ignorant enough to buy into it.

I come from a line of union people. In fact, my maternal grandfather was one of the people who helped start the Bakers' Union in my hometown, Omaha. In the latter part of his career, he was Business Agent of the Bakers' Union until he retired. Unions enable people who work hard to negotiate for a decent wage, and to have control over working conditions. Without unions, workers are screwed.

Thanks to all. Kudos to Mark, Lynn, Laura, and Judy.

I have never been a union member. I have never crossed a union picket line and never will.

I was always a member of a union - from gratitude to them for decent working conditions, for which they had been arguing and fighting for over a hundred years, if for nothing else!

If anyone wants to see how they will be treated if the RepubliCONs take power, they have only to look back at the history of how working people were treated before the unions fought for decent working conditions - and also to the East where they are treated in a very similar fashion now: no living wage, no sick pay, no holiday pay.... etc etc. And as for the conditions in which those poor souls work - I suggest you look at the current campaign against those who make Iphones etc for less than $10 and sell them for about ten times more, and yet use a vile chemical to clean the screens of those phones and pads which is a neurotoxin and is destroying and killing people. The reason for the use of this stuff? It dries a few seconds faster than a similar, safer chemical. Vile.

Yes, it is important to remember this history of how unions were the main force to eliminate workers being harmed due to corporate/employer greed and ethics at odds with the constitution.
