You can pick your friends, but you are stuck with your family. For that reason, many of you will have the …um… pleasure of dining with Republicans today, thus soiling your festivities with InsaniTEA. To help you, I found an excellent article with five items you can employ in the hope of shocking them back into the real world.

Thanks Tom. Living in a red state, I'm afraid some of my dinner partners may be Repugs. If there is ANY talk of politics, I will put it to rest by asking them not to RUIN our dinner with talk of politics, that this is a day of Thanksgiving. Hopefully, they will be shamed enough to stop! If not, I will use the election of Obama as my thing I'm MOST thankful for! HA! That should do it!

Obama extended the tax cuts for the rich, yet the deficit fell....gee, I wonder if Obama will lie and continue this Bush era , pro Romney philosophy? As it was the only policy that helped this administration, don't be shocked if Obama continues this economic policy, and takes credit for it!. He was re-elected because.....?

Because he's far more competent than the entire Republican party.

See why Texas doesn't want critical thinking taught? They need all the Allans they can fool.

Thankfully, Republicans are forgiving. Otherwise, no one would be forgiving of anybody who's thoughts differ from their own

Thanks Tom for the post and the link. Good points. Just got back from the family gathering and all though the majority are Republicans not one word on politics was mentioned. Maybe they were still in "shock". Read and noted.

Thanks for the dose of reality the actual numbers provides to remind us all of how much more we have to be thankful for this year.

We gave only one Republican in our mix, and he chose to have dinner somewhere else. We had a great family day. Hope you had a good day, TC.

I can safely say no politics in my house, so I won't need those talking points! I did see though that chart and some other points on a segment of Rachel Maddow. We did however argue over a ham sandwich and an apple for dinner. My three think that they get their kibble and my dinner too!

TC, thank you for looking out for your neighbours. And thank you too for allowing them to contribute by helping to prepare different parts of the dinner. Do you all sit down together to eat? I do so hope so. My friend, you are a diamond of the soul!

We didn't talk politics at my house, at least not about the deficit or current representatives/former candidates. I consider myself lucky to have dodged that bullet.

I chose to skip Thankgiving with my Republican relatives, this year.
There is just so much absurd rhetoric I can tolerate. Some times, it's arduous to decide why such conversations should be endured, year after year.

The hateful attitudes have no place in my life, any longer. The stress is not worth the family togetherness. There comes a time in one's life, when you must say, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

We celebrated Thanksgiving with my daughter's in-laws, who are Republicans, along with several of their family members. They are wonderful people, and the subject of politics was never raised because we are aware of each other's differences of opinion. It can be done! But I really do like the talking points that appear in the article you posted, Tom. I'm sure I'll use them at another time --on people who are less reasonable and not as lovely as the ones I shared Thanksgiving with!

Thank you TomCat! I always choose to feed the homeless, ThanksGiving, Christmas, Tuesday... I couldn't digest my food with MY family, much less what BEN SAID! Sorry Ben, too soon for a STAR!
TC, YOU ARE "A DIAMOND OF THE SAW"...If I can't star you yet Lynn...HERE IS A HUGE ONE FOR YOU!

Send a Green Star to Lynn Squance

Sending a Green Star is a simple way to say "Thank you"
You cannot currently send a star to Lynn because you have done so within the last week.

Respectful politics is always welcome in my home. (An xi-moron as all my friends are intelligent and believe what the truth and facts are. What you always inform us of TC, and your followers post.! The only time I go CRAZY is your fault Lynn, as EVERY WORD YOU SPEAK IS WHAT I WISH I COULD PUT INTO WORDS...THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!
THERE IS NOTHING RESPECTFUL (IMO) about strife while sharing a meal. Anyone (Tom) whom allows this is a much better person than I. I am not one to read the Bible, but I live by "Better a dry crust of bread with friends than a house full of feasting with strife". Proverbs l7:1
That is the only knowledge of the "Bible" I live by. No disrespect to those who choose this Religion.

The T.P. GOP doesn't want facts to get in the way of their agenda.
They prefer to manipulate facts to suit what they choose to believe in the first place. It must be convenient to see situations in the manner you require to survive.

These people are to be pitied, because they want to bring the past into the present. WHAT WAS ONCE, IS NO LONGER. The world changes and if you can't change with it, you will be left in the dust.

Thanks TomCat....nice article. It's funny how some are undaunted by both history and the facts and continue to shill and carry water for the very wealthy, none of whom would ever miss the Bush tax cuts if they were eliminated.

"Thankfully, Republicans are forgiving. Otherwise, no one would be forgiving of anybody who's thoughts differ from their own"

When "your thoughts" support the destruction and future of our democracy, while supporting the hoarding of our money/economy for the top 1%, your "thoughts" seem so misplaced. Like we're being coned. Shove that forgiveness, please. Thank you very much.

I had dinner with 22 Unitarian Universalist, I don't think a Republican would of crossed our threshold. lol I'm glad I saw the photo long after I ate on the bottom of your link, otherwise I would of lost the lovely meal I had eaten.

Yea, I was finally able to open your message!!! I just wanted to join in after reading the interesting posts. OH MY, what a scary picture you posted. Wink!! One correction I need to make regarding my post. I don't know the Bible, but try to live by the Golden Rule. There are many Lovely messages my friends send me. I quoted Proverbs as that is how I feel about sharing a Blessed meal! That's all! I would LOVE to share a cyber Thanksgiving meal with all of you next year! I just might learn something!!

"Could have gone the entire holiday without the bitter invective TC! I wish you the gift of tolerance. Wouldn't it be nice if people would discuss their differences without resorting to name calling and invective. We will never move ahead until we get off that wagon! "

First we have to get the party that can't argue or discuss issues, off of fox. Do the 12 step program to shed the hate. We've tried that discuss thing for the last 12 years. Every one ends up the same way. Righty changing the subject until the discussion collapses on itself. You can't imagine the frustration while the economy was collapsed on itself and came, it's Obama's fault......Maddening, I tell you!

Thanks TomCat. Unfortunately, I think we are born with certain programmed ideals. We may be able to get Republicans to think a little more about how things really work, but most of the ones I know find more and more bizarre arguments to push their case. If they're backed in a corner their automatic response is, "All politicians are crooks". I'm flabergasted by the lack of common sense some display, and the turn some conversations can take. Guess I shouldn't be, but one can hope for reason eventually....
