Now that the American people have at long last been shocked into demanding reasonable firearms reform, Republicans have been twisting in the wind, with scheme after scheme to prevent it, each one more absurd than the last. I thought it could not get any worse, but I was wrong.
First, if and I do believe an IF is needed here, that particular situation did happen, what has that to do with today's real world?
No one, has talked about taking away all the guns, considering the number of guns in this country, that is a near impossible task. The issue is closing the "gun show loophole" and registering all gun sales. We need a well written Federal law it could/would supersede all state laws and become the Law of the Land. The Police Commissioner of NYC was on Jon Stewart last night and talked about this issue. New York has very strict gun laws, but those are ignored and trips to another state (mostly in the south) anyone can buy a gun and bring into NY.
Just some sanity on this issue - please. I read many irrelevant and misinformed rants by those who wish to believe that is will infringe on our constitutional rights. To those I say, try to read and listen to the actual discussion and not some nonsense cooked up by the NRA for the purpose of getting you fearful, while ignoring what is actually being discussed.
This is first and foremost a public safety issue - repeat: PUBLIC SAFETY!

This is why I changed my politics to a central non-partisan agenda. The scary part is that there are a lot of people even here in Canada who give Glen Beck credence. The GOP is certainly the party of the mega corporations and their hegemonic agenda.

the bigger argument I've heard....twice at least when Conservatives (Cons) call in to talk is that the real danger (i.e. most murders/injuries) are done with handguns....however, then they are asked if they think handgun regulation should be discussed and the answer is always "NO"....when asked to summarize their talking point is something to the effect that "handguns kill more than other weapons, but we shouldn't regulate handguns, therefore any attempts at gun regulation is a waste of time".....

In the Open Thread, I mentioned seeing in the Reuters photo journalism section a picture of a Seattle Police Officer seizing a rocket launcher from a man, an average looking 40 year old man, who had just purchased it. Further along was a picture of an 11 year old at the LA shooting range, gun (pistol) in hand, preparing for some target practice. Can someone please tell me why a citizen needs a rocket launcher! Protection from space aliens, and why an 11 year old should be learning to shoot? This is just the height of stupidity!
I have certainly heard Glenn Beck many times try to hype everybody up with the old Republican/Teabagger chestnut "Obama is coming to take your guns away". This is a withered chestnut but it is still being used by the right wingnuts.
I still think that, if there are going to be guns, your article on 21/12/13 has the right controls — Comprehensive background check and registration at point of sale, training, written test, practical use and maintenance test, health requirments, liability insurance, renewal of licenses and competence at regular intervals. Over the past weeks, I have also been wondering about different licenses for different kinds of guns, or a graduated licensing system so that if you hold, for example, the highest level license, you could operate, shotguns, rifles, handguns etc.
Further there is no need for the average citizen to have an assault weapon, nor high capacity magazines. Ban them.
Living in a country with gun regulations, I am tired of hearing about the guns that are smuggled across the border into Canada. Approximately 90% of the guns used in violent crime come in from the US. Lax US laws perpetuate this.
Oh, if you are coming to Canada on vacation, or planning on driving to Alaska, leave your guns at home. They are not allowed. Every year people are caught at the border, their guns confiscated, and they sent home thoroughly ticked off.

But I need an assault rifle to stop our fascist Government from taking it from me as they fly over in their F-35 fighter-bombers and tanks and Bradley armoured vehicles...and don't forget those pesky drones.

god bless Fred who used no profanity to describe my stance! Good job! -I see no excuse that a civilian should need an assault weapon or high capacity clip - even under the "standard" break in - as for a governmental "stand-off" we civilians - no matter hoe well armed will never stand against a "rogue" government - we have no access to drones, atomic weapons, and several weapons that we have no idea the military contains -- there must be a "trust" in our goernment -- which I'm losing daily- but would NEVER want assault weapons in the hands of a deranged man, or (sorry teens) a teenager - who's momentarily trying to absorb the shit of the world! We also could have gun trafficking identified as a federl offense - to discourage it!
I think Lee you have just not been well indoctrinated into the "gun culture" or you would know that the govmint (not a misspelling) is gonna come an git your guns. Take you off to the FEMA salt mines and lock all of us away into Concentration Camps. Those pesky laws for the public safety for all society and not just a those who following like ducklings the grand conspiracy theories. I used to think the definition of a conspiracy was that no one knew about it, fortunately the Internet has corrected this misconception and now I know that we on a count down to days of the NWO and full-out take over by the commie, Muslim, Kenyan in the White House. (tongue definitely in cheek)
Just a little sanity could make all of this work for us - but we seem to missing even that in our Congress.
