In the antebellum South, there were two kinds of laborers, separated by race. One was slaves. The other was wage slaves. Republicans see this time as an ideal in American history. They are now attempting to return us to those days with a bill sponsored by Tom “Any woman that hires me as her doctor is crazy” Coburn and Rand “Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot” Paul.

Are we liking our Fascism yet?

They want to take us back the the Dark Ages, Cat Man. If they could flog workers or beat them to death without consequence for not meeting daily quota, they would. That's where they want to go....back past the days of slavery of just one race, they want to go back to the days where anyone not titled or of the nobility were nothing more than expendable tools to be discarded when no longer useful. They want their fifedoms back where the serfs were indentured to the land and the person who owned it, which in effect, owned them.

They make me do a Linda Blair...often.

TeaParty Government is close to anarchist rule except they need government to create a police state and to supply military protection......greedy and scared....a sad way to live a life, but they seem to enjoy it.

The surface is rarely reflective of the content of GOP bills these days, including some infamous misnomer titles for things--good reminder of noting intent and fine print, et al being so important TomCat!

"Rand “Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot” Paul." ~ LOL ~ you do make me laugh, Tom - and in this day and age, that's not easy! One does run out of good descriptive names after awhile with these Repuglicans.... I've grown quite tired of banana brains and monkey farts but The GOP defy description sometimes....

I see the republican brain trust is occupied with busy work. Next we plan on teaching them basket weaving, the little dears need to be constructive.

I would pose a question to these anti government "elected officials" if they really don't believe in government, why then are they holding seats in the Federal government? Is that not hypocrisy of the first water?

Ditto all the spot on comments posted so far. . .The GOP/JohnBirchLyingLibertarians/Neo-CON/Pulpits4Profits/et al affiliates have succeeded in their campaigns to use beloved common vernacular to confuse the masses. . .good people are now unwittingly and inadvertently buying and spewing forth the repackaged bull dung because the majority of decent citizens are too busy complying with greed and stupidity servitude requirements branded under the guises of work ethics and values from god and nature to have time to think, reflect and recognize what is happening all around them. . .donning propaganda blinders

From the wise who said it well. . .

"When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him, 'whose?' " — Don Marquis

“A house built on greed cannot long endure.” ― Edward Abbey, Postcards from Ed: Dispatches and Salvos from an American Iconoclast

"Business knows no pity, and cares for justice only when justice is seen to be better policy. If it had power to control the elements, it would grasp in its iron clutches the waters, sunshine and air and resell them by measure, and at exorbitant prices to the millions of famished men, women and children." — W.A. Duncan, in the Cherokee Advocate, 1892

“The Greed of gain has no time or limit to its capaciousness. Its one object is to produce and consume. It has pity neither for beautiful nature nor for living human beings. It is ruthlessly ready without a moment's hesitation to crush beauty and life.” ―George Eliot

''Even our commercial policy should hold an equal and impartial hand: neither seeking nor granting exclusive favors or preferences.'' —Adam Smith, "Father of Modern Economics"

If the few cents the workers in the fast food chains are making as a minimum wage, you'd already have slave labour on your hands, I'd say.

…a press release from Coburn’s office explains that it “[p]rohibits the use of the Commerce Clause, except for ‘the regulation of the buying and selling of goods or services, or the transporting for those purposes, across boundaries with foreign nations, across State lines, or with Indian tribes.’”…

I seem to recall, but correct me if I am wrong, that some of the GOP were trying to use the Commerce clause against Obamacare. I just can't remember exactly how.

They can't have it both ways.

Nonetheless, the Republicanus/Teabaggers are a bunch of useless twits whose brains wouldn't fill a thimble even if they were stacked one on the other. If the GOP get into power, the US will be a third world country.

While I agree the Republicans need to be removed from power, I also insist that Dems need to grow some spines....both House & Senate. Dems had control when Obama was elected in 2008, and were able to pass some significant bills. But, the "public option" Obama promised us voters was not allowed to even be brought to the table--people promoting it were actually arrested outside the very 1st meeting. Financial Reform was watered down not just by the GOP, but complicit Dems who allowed lobbyists and their own congressional aides to actually write huge portions of that bill.
Even the recent Amash Amendment (co-sponsored by Progressive Dem. John Conyers), to de-fund one single NSA program under Sec. 215 of the Patriot Act, lost by only 12 votes. Both the GOP & Dems were actually split on this bill. Obama, Pelosi, Boehner, Cantor, Michele Bachmann, & Steny Hoyer were ON THE SAME SIDE.

Why I do declare, slavery isn't back dawling it never left. Shoot fire when owning slaves WAS THE CIVILIZED thing to do, the slave market was worth more than BANKS, RAILROADS AND AGRICULTURE PUT TOGETHER! Now we are using our little ole Christian heads to keep them baby making women producing more and more of them slaves, oh excuse me I meant babies of course. My dear often married cousin newtie Gingrich had that there answer for yaw'all remember darling? He wanted to fire them ole men who was doing those simple custodial jobs in schools, and let the young uns do them jobs for a lot less money and no benefits. Of course there is also that very cute mittens cousin of mine, oh my he was fun. Sorry I do digress again, it's the mint juleps you know. Well anyway mittens 47% of folks would also make fine slaves. Heck, I guess there is dandy randy Paul and my other cousin Tom coburn wanting to cut off all them expensive tax paid benefits like food stamps, social security and Lordy, Lordy welfare! Now I also want yaw'all to know why we want that there Obamacare insurance thing done away with don'tcha, well it is because when them there slaves get beyond their prime and can no longer do a decent hardworking 18 hour day, they will pull our economy down, so it is best they die off. So long as we keep them poor babies just coming we ain't got nuthing to worry about.... Now yaw'all be good you hear and keep us thuglicans right where belong in my other cousins' pockets, you that side of the family the Koch side. My I am full of cousins, but you do know we must inter marry otherwise our wonderful ways will be lost..... Oh for sure it is meant as snark but sadly with so much truth it breaks my heart.

Lois thank you for bringing up what too many still fail to realize, it's been a two Party system that has gotten us to where we are today. Although one Party may be more ruthless than the other but that Party has had plenty help with the complacency and even handing over votes to "git er done."

Who votes for these people Eternal Gardener, unfortunately, the mostly ill informed public. I've a dear friend from High School, but she ate up all the right wing propaganda hook line and sinker and voted Republican, as she struggles to keep a roof over her head for her disabled son from birth and herself. Both on disability, she is near blind caring for him, barely keeping warm, barely eating, yet still, she voted Republican. Mind blowing.

I had even made it a point to mention "other" Candidates on the ballot box, I said, the last time you voted it was for George Bush and your reason was, we don't change Presidents in the middle of a war. Didn't matter the war was "caused" by him based on lies. I wasn't trying to tell her who to vote for, but brought up the other options she most likely was unaware of. Still she went with the quick sound bites and voted for Romney.

She has a heart of gold, but she doesn't read as she can't see well and frankly wasn't much of a reader beforehand, listens to mainstream TV only which as many of us know can be lacking and even misinforming. She lives in Republican territory, so it was what she "heard" out of their mouths.....she went with Romney, he was rich, therefore he knows how to create the jobs. Oh yes, the "job creators"......the less informed at least understand we need jobs but they don't have the whole story of why we have so few jobs......where did all those jobs go and why under 8 years of Republicans there were not a lot of jobs here. Short memories. She certainly had no idea about Vulture Capitalist and how Romney destroyed Companies he had obtained or had a hand in, many people lost their jobs with him.

So keep messing with the public education, that use to be the great equalizer, feed our children and ourselves foods with less nutrition, either because we can't afford the better foods or the GMO's are invading our body cells. Keep the toxins going into the environment, the propaganda, and we have a confused, tired, depressed, apathetic public. Then when people finally do band together to speak out, they get pepper sprayed, clubbed, told to stand in fenced in pens 5 miles away from anyone and anywhere to protest, a media that jumps on the bandwagon of how disorganized they are, how dirty they are, and pull out the most unusual people with the wacky clothes and ask them the important questions, infiltrated by plants to create a problem, NDAA, and that will teach those Americans for using their Rights to dissent.

But not to stand up is certain death, these Plutocrats will starve us, will continue to poison us, will deplete our lands, will frack us to death, in fact, they don't care. So we have to stop attacking each other as the Greedy Heartless Ones love watching us fight among ourselves, takes the Light off of what They are doing.
Relight The Flame of Protest

Lynn, the Fascists tried to use the Commerce Clause against Obamacare when it was first brought out. That is what got it put before the Supremes....and the Fascist Five said it couldn't be used to strike it down. See, they only like the Commerce Clause when it benefits them and not the people. The rest of the time they ignore it in favor of their Corporate benefactors/overlords or when it will hurt the people for profit.

What right to dissent, Sheryl? We no longer have ANY rights. That is why they can now fence us off, do whatever torturous public act (like pepper spraying at will, rubber bullets at will, clubbing at will, etc) and get away with it without any oversight or accountability or retribution. We are already living in a Totalitarian Police State and as you say, the public at large are too beat down, depressed, worn out, worn down, ill, distracted or plain in denial or stubborn willful ignorance about what AmuriKKKa now is. Land of the debt slaves and home of the chumps.

I agree with you, Sheryl, so long as the majority of the public remain at each other's throats the Fascist Elite as laughing their southern ends clean off at all of us and they remain in power over us all. BUT.....there will come a reckoning, Karma, one way......or another. I only hope I live to see it....but I doubt it.

The Republicans think the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. is a model for all companies. They just love that way of doing business.

Historical Importance of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire:

A fire at the Triangle Waist Company factory in New York City killed 146 workers. The large number of deaths exposed the dangerous conditions in high-rise factories and prompted the creation of new building, fire, and safety codes around the United States.

"I seem to recall, but correct me if I am wrong, that some of the GOP were trying to use the Commerce clause against Obamacare. I just can't remember exactly how. "

Funny you should mention that because the reason Roberts who is against Obamacare went along with it is that striking it down would have invalidated the commerce clause. 8^)

Thanks all.

Other than Ron Paul, the worst of all candidates, the 3rd party candidate who performed best in 2012 is Jill Stein. She pulled in 9/25 of 1%.

Thank you for the article and all of the great comments here, It appears that most people understand what the republicans are really after, The old way of life, where old white men control everything and everybody, including woman ,children, the elderly, education, jobs, anything that can put more money into their pockets and keep everyone else under their thumbs, I hope that when America has had ebough, they will rise up and go to the polls and vote these simple minded backwoods republicans that do nothing but sit on their hands and play GOD.with all of the lives of the good citizens here in America, What people they do not kill by having wars, they punish when they come back with no jobs, they move all the jobs overseas. Wake UP YOU ALL AND DO SOMETHING NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.....period.
