Yesterday Republicans put three items on the House floor that might have created exceptions in the Republican Shutdown for Washington DC, the VA, and the National Parks Service. These are areas over which Republicans have received a lot of complaint for their hateful blackmail, so they hoped that they could take some heat off themselves by creating the appearance of wanting to pass these exceptions. At the same time they are blaming Democrats for blocking them, but that’s a lie too.

One of our Illinois senators, Mark Kirk, went to take down the barricades for veterans. Here is a republican who had an illness where his congressional insurance took care of him but he voted against Obamacare and for the shutdown. I don't want anyone to be ill or disabled. I wish him well and he appears to be recovering nicely. However he shouldn't make a show over veterans when he gets great, free healthcare even he votes for the poor to drop dead.

Thanks for all the hard work you're doing, TomCat. You must be getting exhausted by nailing all the tricks and scams the GOP is pulling, to the church doors. Keep it up. though; everyone should be aware of the stunts they are pulling to have it their way.

Cat Man....please take care of yourself....do not make me come over there! LOL

I think the American people are slowly waking up, some against their will, but awakening all the same. These stunts are being seen for what they are and I hope our President and members of the house/senate stand their ground and do NOT capitulate. Because, if they do and give the Rethugs what they want, there goes the rollar coaster downhill and then they will get all of what they had their temper tantrum over. This time around it needs to be the Fascist Baggers who capitulate...not us.

As it is, I saw where the Prez is willing to 'negotiate' Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid/Welfare over the Debt Ceiling....NOT GOOD, peeps!

Serious question – did the GOP/TP want to pay the National Guard too – or is that my dyslexia again? I wondered about that when I read that people are planning peaceful marches and peaceful demonstrations in October and on Nov 5 – we know how 'over excited' the powers of law and order can be when faced with peaceful people – pepper spraying people standing still and so on…. it made me wonder – and I thought of Kent State…

I suppose the ''up'' side to this situation is that Americans have seen exactly how FOUL their elected representatives have become.

Re-opening the parks, though only one was of real interest and that was entirely for a camera opportunity. The parks are in fact, one of the few things that can and will maintain themselves, for weeks without interference. The animals are not hoping for the visitors to show up. Now if they were to Stop all drilling in the National parks that might score some points. They also voted to fund DC - because they need DC functioning well for the personal convenience of Congress, but that too failed.

The Memorial barricades were removed by the Vets themselves and the friends and family traveling with them,
the House members were there for a photo opportunity and nothing more. Don't get suckered.

The NIH and CDC remain closed - and after all who cares about some sick children? Let the Vets visit the Memorial, it is theirs. Why don't people care about dying children? Have we lost all humanity?

Everything we have seen either in Congress or the states that gets TV attention is almost always a distraction from the real agenda. I have to wonder what is really going on here. We know that Obama signed the law and we know that he can not postpone this law for one or two years without breaking the law. If he did, the Republicans would then impeach him for breaking the law. The one area that was given an extension was done by Executive order - one specific problem.

"divide and conquer",don't make me laugh
the only they've conquered is the stupidity vote
75% of the country thinks they are acting like spoiled brats
I cannot see that as a constructive strategy
Obama has nothing to lose now,he'll let them hang themselves, not fair that they get free healthcare for life
they should take it away

All or nothing at all - the GOP think they can take the pressure off by funding certain programs - the only thing that will take the pressure off is a clean bill, no attachments, no foul play, no sneaky riders. What is so darn difficult about that?

Their political and public relations advisers forgot to remind them to bring their Trojan Horse and then they discovered their mechanics weren't hidden after all so the internal blame game has begun over who was supposed to be responsible for the horse...

This is not about divide and rule, this about trying to make the other side look bad. The Republican tactic has been to divide public opinion yet is using the victim card shows how clueless the Republicans are by driving the stupid in D.C. They may feel very assured right now that this shutdown won’t hurt them. They don’t seem to appreciate history (Newt Gingrich shutdown Clinton), polls, or reality. Nothing breaks through the cloud of narcissist tea hubris, crippled as it is by its ignorance and inexperience, and further broken by Republicans’ collective refusal to “believe” in facts. These folks live in the epistemic bubble of their highly cultivated and well funded corporate cult. If anything this will seriously undermine the Republicans as a party that has the voter's best interests at heart as evidenced by Mittens gaffe prone escapade in 2012, people just won't trust them ever again.

Kit, I have a question about this statement because it baffles me....

"We know that Obama signed the law and we know that he can not postpone this law for one or two years without breaking the law"

Didn't he do that by allowing businesses one more year? Why is it that the least likely to be able to afford healthcare be the only ones left in the game? Some people are not rich enough or poor enough to be in the game. How can a law only be enforced on a small population of people?

I seriously don't understand how allowing business, corporations, one more year and not middle class families and individuals as being fair.

The REPUGS are in a very bad place now and they are trying to "slime" their way out of it. No way! They made their bed - now they need to sleep in it. I can't wait for 2014! Let's hope the people don't forget when it comes time to vote again.

"House Republicans used a procedure that required a two-thirds vote, hoping that would pressure Democrats to vote for them, knowing the bills would fail without their support."

Now the Republicanus/Teabaggers are likely to "advertise" that the Democrats refused to vote for the funding. What the sheeple won't realise is that the vote could have been a simple majority vote in the House, but that Republicanus/Teabaggers 'rigged' the vote for a 2/3 supermajority. To paraphrase Sir Walter Scott, "What a tangled web of lies they weave, when first they practice to deceive the people."

The Republicanus/Teabaggers will see it as a win/win because had the bills had passed with or without the supermajority, the Senate Democrats would likely have voted them down. Either way, it appears like the Democrats are obstructing, and the Republicanus/Teabaggers will make hay with that as long as they can.

Republicanus/Teabaggers don't give a rat's ass about Washington, DC. They are only interested in not being inconvenienced themselves. They don't give a rat's ass about veterans because they are yesterday's cannon fodder, and likewise, they don't care about the millions of non veteran elderly and sick because they just take up resources that could go to their 1% benefactors and corporate welfare.

Divide and conquer, indeed! Another case of projection, having accused Mr Obama on many occasions in the past of dividing the country.

Maybe we should be WORRIED that the Rethuglicans DON'T SEEM TO CARE IF THEY ALIENATE THE ENTIRE ELECTORATE.
Maybe they - or, rather, their CORPORATE MASTERS - are planning on staying in power WITHOUT ANY POPULAR VOTE, WITHOUT ELECTIONS.
Maybe we should be thinking in THOSE terms.

Yes, now everybody hates them, won't vote for them, doesn't believe their propaganda LIES any more.
And yet, the Rethugs KEEP ON DOING WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND DON'T SEEM TO CARE THAT MUCH.

The Rethugs are being so OBSTRUCTIONIST, that they are going to make govt IMPOSSIBLE - that is, a
DEMOCRATIC {"of the people"} GOVERNMENT, IMPOSSIBLE.
Their Corporate Masters would PREFER THERE BE NO RULES AND REGULATIONS THEY HAVE TO OBSERVE. So they can RAPE THE ENVIRONMENT WITH NO HINDRANCES AT ALL.
No HINDRANCES VOTED FOR BY THE PEOPLE or their representatives.

A Free Hand with UNREGULATED CAPITALISM. Each Corporations EXTRACTING EVERY SINGLE LAST THING IT CAN. No matter WHO [or what!] has to DIE in the totally un-regulated Process.
They are already over half-way there in the drive to GET RID OF REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT...

Thanks for putting this all in such great perspective, Tom. So many excellent comments indicate that at least we can see through the smoke. The unfortunate thing is the way the media's playing with this---taking soundbytes and blowing them up to gain more viewers. Watch C-SPAN and take note of the Dems voting alongside the GOP on some of these bills. Although it seems Harry Reid has momentarily found his long-lost spine, I'm wondering if he'll eventually cave to something. BMutiny has mentioned something I that I've read or heard, too. Since the GOP gerrymandered all the districts to give them a false majority, all they need to continue is the Koch-ALEC money to continue winning. They're all beholden to corporations to fund their coffers. They can continue this obstruction for quite awhile, while destroying our infrastructure. This is worrisome.

Illinois had a few problems, anyone elligible for Medicaid help with Obamacare was directed to the State Agency – people needing the Federal line did have problems. Apparently Blue Cross/Blue Shield was overloaded with calls!
I would think people would know by now that they can keep the Insurance they already have and don't Have to call if its Employer provided or Medicare or Medicaid..but News Media hasn't really Explained that much..
The main thing News Media Hasn't explained is that CONgre$$ is losing its Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and HAS to buy insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges! 28th Amendment bull$hit emails clarified at Snopes... Even though they will still get "help" in purchasing it! They HAVE to purchase through the same exchange as "real people"!! *gasp*!!! THAT's why they've voted to destroy Obamacare 43 times & are holding the Country hostage!!!!

My Congressman is a sponsor of Bill H.R. 3067 also known as "No Obamacare Subsidies for Members of Congress Act"

I encourage this bill to be passed as a good faith gesture to the American people.

I would check it out and if you find it worthy call your congressional representative.

The GOP, and especially the Tea Party members, just love to quote and invoke the “Founding Fathers.” However, the truth is the “Founding Fathers” would hardly understand today’s GOP/Tea Party. I cannot imagine the Continental Congress or the Constitutional Convention our “Founding Fathers” led successfully providing leadership during the revolution, nor crafting the Constitution without understanding that politics and leadership must include the art of compromise. I must assume that if the GOP/Tea Party members of today’s Congress had been in charge we would be singing “God Save the Queen (or King)” instead of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Not they haven't even stopped to think how many people this has affected, and they are all voters. People with Babies relying on the WIC for the formula and food, the Senior's who had one hot meal a day! People on Vacation that can't use the park's. There are many more reason's. People will be getting their fill when if affects them and they open their eyes who caused this!
Thank You Tomcat

Corporations, bankers, and elites rule the roost, and the Tea Party are their most loyal toadies. Think of what a corporation was at the time of the founding of our country, and think of the behemoth it has become today. There is no wonder why about every aspect of our system has been perverted and rendered unrecognizable. The constitution is being hollowed out, gutted of its foundation of principles.

Got an email from one of my senators, Democrat, who stated she ws Not going to take any pay while the government is shut down. Haven't heard from the second one, but believe he might do the same. Not exactly certain about MN Rep because he seems to lean GOP in a few things.

These games may work with some of their senior voters because those people don't have the internet, or if they do, don't use it to check on anything except more of Faux News and cronies. That's my mother. These seniors believe everything because hey only watch news from Faux and Glenn Beck, getting no exposure to the truth. It's seems like it's too much trouble for them to check the veracity of any news. This pretend vote for certain programs may just work.

TURN THAT HEAT ON!! ...(Oh, that's right!...the teabaggers and HOW MANY Republicans deny Global Warming and Climate Change!?!...hell, if you don't believe the truth,..according to them the TRUTH will not affect you, personally)....SAUTE, those 3 dozen teabagger republicans!and those that are behind all of them! Turn that HEAT ON!..Fry, baby, fry!!(we do really need to figure out how to compost the "garbage" though, to not leave so much toxic waste for the safety of the 89% of the populace!)
...ditto on Edith's comment!

Obama needs to put some of his brilliant people on how to GET RID OF THESE GUYS. I mean get creative with it. Think outside the box. They aren't nice people, surely there's dirt or some loophole or something to nail them down on. There is no reason they should be allowed to keep their jobs after this. They are terrorists. They spread fear and chaos. Take. Them. Out.

Thanks everyone! Many kudos, many stars.

Suzanne, the reason the individual mandate is needed is to provide a revenue stream to pay for the emergency care that people, who refuse to buy health care, can't pay, instead of raising YOUR health insurance price to pay for it.

Suzanne O. (32)
Friday October 4, 2013, 4:48 am
TomCat, I understand the need and purpose for the individual mandate. My question was really more to the fact that business (corporations) have been given one more year before they must comply. How is that not changing an existing law? If President Obama can not postpone the individual mandate because it would be breaking the law. Why wasn't the one year delay for business breaking the law?

I honestly thought everyone had to be in it to make it work. We have people and groups waivered out, delays for business and the only ones left are the individual mandate people.

Trust me, I know this first hand, especially having a daughter. No one wants to live without healthcare. I think the reason for the rush on the healthcare websites are for two reasons. The first is people do want affordable insurance and the second being no one wants the IRS up their _ _ _.

I have not been able to access the exchange site yet, but here in Jersey it seems as though a family of four with subsidies, using the federal health exchange put in place will have roughly a $300-$400 monthly bill. That is not affordable for many. Not in Jersey, we are taxed and billed high for everything. The cost of living is through the roof.

The monthly cost is lower with this law, that is for sure but still not so affordable. It hurts some good people who have few options. Added stress to an already stressful situation for them.

Just as an FYI, I am not in favor of government shut down. I am also not in favor of positions of no negotiation from our president or either side of the House. There are millions of us caught in the middle of the two extremes who have the ear of the House. It is unacceptable that little representation seems to go in their direction.

I had friends who died on 911 by the acts of terrorists. I do not see any of our representatives being equal to a terrorist. I know everyone is thrilled with this fight taking place and the nastier the better it would seem. I find it so distasteful and beneath the office that all of them hold. I also find it distressing that this is how we look at each other as people.

They are acting worse than children. All of them. If they were my kids I would put them all to work raking leaves or doing yard work until they grew up.

Just thought I'd put that out there.
