The more I learn about Bergdahlghazi, the more I become convinced that Republicans have been breathing their own self-produced methane for too long. Bill Maher had a fascinating panel discussion about the five Taliban prisoners released from the GOP Gulag at Gitmo in the exchange. His final conclusion is so obvious that most journalists could have failed to discuss it only by intent to withhold the most pertinent fact.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 5:13 am
Of course Maher is spot on, and also on the importance of these five so called "five heads of terrorist organisations" as they are now called by the GOP. Maher could show every statement of the two Republican debaters for the BS it was, he's really well informed when going into a debate with them.
I was also nicely surprised by Anthony Weiner, whom I only know as the guy who tweeted these strange selfies when they weren't fashionable yet. A pity he's made that "faux pas" and I hope he's soon forgiven, because he made a lot of very sensible remarks in that debate too.

If we hadn't gone to Iraq over yellow cake;
No Dead or disabled American veterans
No trillion of dollars of debt to China
Time and money to take care of our own problems.
It would have been nice if the powers that be locked up the terrorists on student Visas who didn't go to school but instead took flight lessons while telling the instructors they didn't need to learn to land. If an American citizen had said that he would have been locked up for life. No questions asked. But the terrorists who flew into The World Trade Center and the Pentagon had rights.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 6:07 am
As usual Bill Maher is exactly to the point about the republicans. Fox news should go off the air or at the very least get their facts straight. Gee what a concept . . . . .
Sunday June 8, 2014, 6:44 am
He's been very poignant lately
I can't believe he had Ralph Reed preaching on the show, he's got a civil malfunction in his head whenever he can't answer to the very bible questions he wants so badly to talk about, Jewish bible has to be edited by the son, , lol...sorry to be somewhat off topic, watched this last night, still laughing at Reed and his white, right, Christian nut cases.
For those who do not have HBO, I'm sorry. Everyone should have the opportunity to laugh with Maher every Friday night that the show is on. Now, on Sunday there is John Oliver so HBO have a real lock on political humor.
The insincere drivel by Nicole Wallace, with her child-like innocence is was often just a bit repulsive. Gee, What hasn't Obama done that? I'm so glad that smacked her down. In fact, the entire created Bowe Bergdahl would be controversy is nonsense. If the man did something that is found to be illegal, that will be discovered by the Army investigation. I think if more likely if this is honest, we will find a man that had reached the end of his mental ability to justify the murder of a child. He may have walked away, he face some punishment, or some mental health help, but we most certainly owed him the rescue from captivity.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 7:08 am
Nicely said, Kit ~ I so love that Maher is not afraid to tell it like it is. That he can put some humor into it makes it all even that much better. He's really the only reason we keep HBO...

I saw this. I have to admit two or three things have me disgusted by the P.O.W. exchange situation.
1) We basically have people saying, "Well he was a deserter!" Some just say this and leave it there. Others come right out and let us know what blood thirsty monsters they are. They say we should have left him there. Of course, we haven't had a trial or you know any solid PROOF that he deserted. This is just more swiftboating. They did it to Kerry and now they are doing it to some guy, that as far as I know isn't running anything. Next time Republicans pretend to care about the troops LAUGH IN THEIR FACE.
2) The very same people that for years have been calling for his release, by any means necessary, changed their mind as soon as Obama did it. Bill refers to this as blacktracking. (spelling). Basically, if Obama is for it, they are against it. Interestingly enough, their fake patriotism of supporting the troops, is a less powerful desire than thumbing their nose at Obama.
3) 9/11 happened when I was in 5th grade. I have been thoroughly disappointed with how the "adults" have handled it. We turned into a nation of cowards overall. The moral of the story is BE AFRAID. The evil terrorist boogeyman is going to get you. I'm not saying these five guys, aren't horrible. They are. But they are not single handedly going to blow up the planet.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 7:50 am
And another thing, we never needed GITMO. We could have thrown these guys into a maximum security prison. If there is one thing America, the land of the free, is good at, it is imprisoning people. We have the most people in prison in total population and per capita. Yes, we are ahead of nations like China, Russia, and Iran. And how many of these millions of prisoners get out every year? Not that many.
GITMO CREATES TERRORISTS. If everyone is so terrified of terrorists, then you should support closing Gitmo
Sunday June 8, 2014, 8:13 am
I'd never heard of Nicole Wallace (is she ver4y well known?) but, after listening to her speak, I wondered if she's REAL of if someone blew her up, fluffed her hair, dusted her nose and sent her out to represent the ideal Republican woman.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 8:29 am
"Maher finally said out loud what’s been missing from the discussions we’ve been hearing in our corporate media, and that’s why we could not have just tried these "terrorists" being held at Guantanamo Bay in a court of law — we tortured them."
One can't expect journalism from any Rupert Murdoch owned organization. They are parrots for the right wing and have never been anything else no matter how much their sets costs, or their "news"print, they are shills and will never be anything but shills. Bush did this, they know it, they are so partisan that they care not about what they make us look like nor the position the President was in. Doesn't matter what happens next to this soldier, well, except for him. Perhaps the greatest service he has done his country is to expose the morally bankrupt right wing for what it is. And, this does give them something else to froth about besides Benghazi as that has not been working out too well for them - the facts their trip them up too - they didn't care about any of the others killed at embassies under Bush's watch, just this one because it happened on Obama's watch. Their hypocrisy grows more astounding by the day. I trust the American people see that clearly though the reich wing never will, and that will be their undoing.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 8:31 am
I had to watch several times. Close Gitmo, period.!! Bill got red faced talking to Wallace @ 6:00 mark, he did a good snap back on Wallace. Love his show, and try to watch it every week. Thanks, Tom for this.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 8:47 am
Will someone please explain to me why, if the Army had the faintest suspicion that Bowe Bergdahl was AWOL (they could not POSSIBLY prove desertion from the information at hand, since he had at least once previously left the base without authorization and returned), why, I repeat, the Army PROMOTED HIM TWICE? Are they under some obligation that didn't exist when I was in service to promote people, absent actual disciplinary action, on the basis if time served alone? Are they under some obligation that didn't use to exist to consider time passed as time served when there is even the remotest possibility that the time may have been AWOL time which would NOT count as time served? I just do not get it.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 12:16 pm
Well, the greatest hypocrisy of the GOP has to be that there were Republicans praying for Sgt Bergdahl's release, now they are screaming that he was a deserter and a traitor and therefore Obama should be impeached. Of course they brought out the ideal man to know about treason: Oliver North who went on about paying a ransom for the release using figures that he pulled out of his ass. Given North's own history makes these comments pretty rich. It was North who, along with other Reagan administration officials, helped engineer the illegal sale of arms to Iran in an effort to secure the release of American hostages and then illegally used the proceeds to finance rebels in Nicaragua. Yes he has got the GOP pinned as hypocrites whose views change in the wind particularly when the President is involved.

"The problem is we tortured them and now we can't try them in regular court."
I think the Republicanus/Teabagger, Nicole Wallace, either has selective memory, or even though she was at meetings, she was lied to or not told the complete truth. I favour the second because extreme dicretion would be required when breaking international law . . . and they knew the law. Omission is still a lie. Baby Bush and Chickenhawk Cheney were up to their dirty noses in the torture of the detainees. And Congress, dominated by the Republicanus/Teabaggers, passed laws that the detainees could not be brought to American soil etc. So this idea that Obama has had 6 years to figure out how to close Gitmo, is pure rank elephant shit!
Many things happen in the fog of war that might otherwise not have happened. Let a proper investigation be done with all relevant information and then a decision made as to prosecute for desertion or not. We don't have all the facts so there should be no speculation as to guilt or innocence.
Republicanus/Teabaggers are always stirring up firestorms … manufacturing smoke when there isn't any. I am sure that even before Bergdahl sets foot on US soil, they will manufacture a scandal out of all proportion, if no other reason because they want to tarnish Obama.
Question ; Would the military have promoted Bergdahl twice while he was a prisoner if there were pre-existing concerns about his status – captured soldier versus deserter?
Sunday June 8, 2014, 3:31 pm
Wow, I just had a weird thought
Could we possibly need to put the us government that made gimp the paradise that it's become through trials like Nuremberg?
I mean torture is torture?
Sunday June 8, 2014, 4:17 pm
The Bush Administration released more than 500 Gitmo detainees.
The Taliban was a legitimate government which the US recognized and gave diplomatic recognition. Therefore the released prisoners are legitimate combatants under all laws and tradition and must be treated as POWs.
President Obama has announced that our major combat operations will cease at the end of this year. The Geneva Convention states that repatriation will take place "without delay after the cessation of active hostilities". One exception to immediate repatriation is provided in the case of prisoners convicted or prosecuted for criminal offences. But none of the five were ever charged with anything, much less terrorism, and so were never convicted of anything either.
The conclusion? The US would have had to release them by the end of this year by custom and international law. We got something for nothing. All of this contrived, fact-deprived hysteria has gotten tiresome.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 4:20 pm
After seeing Anthony Weiner dominate two Republicans on this week's show, I think we should put him in charge of writing all Democratic campaign ads. Time and time again, the Republicans had no response at all to the points he made.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 9:41 pm
Weiner ... "a nut job that walked off the job". Since when is a soldier who could be suffering from some form of "shell shock" called a "nut job"? When the people who are calling him a deserter, and thus a "nut job", have been in that soldier's shoes and they stayed at their post with no hesitation (many soldiers didn't but they didn't get taken by the Taliban - oh, and they weren't tried as deserters, either), then maybe ... "maybe" they can say things about Bergdahl. And I repeat the "maybe" part of that. Again.
Of course, Maher is correct. And the Republicans sit there and blame it all on Obama, as usual. Stupid is as stupid does.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 9:55 pm
Thanks all. Kudos to many, especially Joanne for her excellent point of his two promotions. As for Wiener he was a fine progressive politician, before his wiener issues. If he had done that as a Republican, he woulf hyave been forgiven and reelected.
Sunday June 8, 2014, 9:56 pm
I feel sorry for Bergdahl and his family. If he was guilty of desertion, he will be court martialed. His fmily has been pilloried by the right wing press. First McCain was for his release, now he is not. Smoke and mirrors form the Republicans, all to discredit Obama
Ditto what Lona said about Weiner. I was surprised at how much sense he made. Good point by Wayne W. too.
Monday June 9, 2014, 6:25 am
I can't add much that has not already been said but the right wing can take anything out of context, twist it around and try to make a scandal out of it to try and make Obama look bad. Or, at minimum, to prevent anything Obama does from in any way looking positive. This is just the next attempt at feigning outrage and successfully getting their blind followers spun up once again. And the Bergdahl family are the victims of it this time, as are the Gitmo prisoners who have been freed for release, but can't because of politics and the need to trash Obama over anything else, even what is in the best interest of the country.
Monday June 9, 2014, 7:17 am
Torture….it all comes down to having lowered ourselves into places we said "other" Countries did and we'd would never. I think the American people need to get off their rose colored glasses in many areas and by doing so see the reality of where we are so we can begin the climb back to having the "higher" standards we speak about but fail to do.
Until we know all the facts behind the soldier people need to keep their mouths shut about him being a deserter or whatever. Many of our troops are suffering from PTSD but are sent back to combat zones over and over again. How do we know what really was happening, maybe he ingested some drug willingly or unwillingly, it is stated he wasn't pleased with things with the USA, well I'm not either but that doesn't make me unpatriotic nor him a deserter. He has been caught up in the cruel politics that has been created because we have a man in office that isn't white and that is a shame.
I agree on what Kit said about the woman panelist, can she slink back into private life and do us all a favor. I too am glad Maher called her out.
