Why isn't it illegal to cut mangroves in Mexico?

It is illegal Blue. Corruption is the name of the game.

My father has a land that has a mangrove infont of the sea (the mangrove doesnīt belong to him of course, is patrimony of the nation) and he respects the law. No constructions there. He is selling that land with the condition in paper to RESPECT the mangrove and guess what, hotels donīt want to buy it because they want access to the sea! when itīs very easy to make a wood jungle bridge that can give a jungle cool look to that property!....oh noooo....they want to destroy the mangrove! but nope, he will wait for an ecological hotel that wants to make a protected place for all the world to enjoy nature as it is. What Mexico needs is more environmentalists investors to help us here. Not industrialized greedy people. Beauty of nature first.

By the way, all the mangroves belong to the gov. not to particulars, the problem is those particulars that destroy the mangroves for having a stupid access to the beach. sad, eh?

It is also illegal in Florida and in the Cayman Islands ... without these mangroves the seasonal storms will rip the coastlines to shreds and destroy marine life.

Even when the mangroves are trimmed in freont of our timeshares on Sannibel Island (Florida), there are personnel to "supervise" the trimming; not allowed to cut them down too short (or kill them).

Itīs sad Blue, that the power of some international hotels have nore weight than nature.

And thatīs all around the world. Some people make rules to break them. Itīs so easy to them with power and money to trash this planet.

Thanks Bernardette and Mandy yes, itīs sad and they should protect this place.

Rocio, I donīt understand, I know that this country needs money but we should be careful with this lands and sell them only to people that really will help the nature, rain forest and mangroves. Ecological tourism for people that really love nature. Not those monster buildings that polute with no compassion.

I have visited Tulum and it is soooo beautiful, Teresa, but maybe I was a part of the problem - too many tourists for those who think only of the money?? I try to tread softly wherever I go but there is always the matter of waste from the places you stay in - where does it go? - and of course the beaches that have been made accesssible for the visitors. It would be a crying shame if this beautiful coastline is damaged in this or any way.

Thatīs the price you pay when tourism take place. This happens all over the world.

Yes, but we can do something as tourists too. We have to check that the hotel we are going takes care of the nature and respects the place, we can chose better.
