Inflate Your Car's Tires (and Your E-Go)

By keeping your vehicle's tires inflated to the proper pressure, you will be increasing your fuel economy and extending the life of your rubber, which means more cash in your pocket and more hope for polar bears. It may not sound like a lot,

WARNING. You need to be very careful when you inflate your tires from say 26 to 36 . I used to drive my Datsun 260 C at 26 psi which was the recommended pressure. Although it did have hydro steering and I was used to it, a friend suggested taking the pressure up to 38 as he reckoned that a policeman had suggested that was a better option. (1984 was the date)

I went down to the local gas station and filled them up to the 36 psi. I drove out onto the main road and accelerated and was nearly involved in an accident. The "car" now drove so freely on the steering that it was just finger tip control. It was very scary for the first 100 yards as the steering response was so light. The fuel economy jumped dramatically from around 20 miles per gallon to over 26 and a bit later when we travelled across Australia to the East we did a round trip of around 6,250 miles. THAT gave me a much less cost than it would have been to the tune of some 75 gallons of fuel. That really adds up.

Thanx Teresa for reminding me again. This backs up your story. I do have to admit that I was somewhat of a non believer when Dale told me about it but I have always driven with my tyres pumped just over the recommended amount and if my tyres happen to go down and I haven't checked them, there will be a much lower mpg.(here in Oz we work in kilometres to the litre so I just did the calculation for all those who use gallons instead of litres per kilometre. My Nissan Navarra Ute does around 8 kpl but if I travel at 90 kph instead of 110, it takes a bit longer to get there but also gives me an even 10 kpl and that is a saving of some 20 to 25%.. It definitely pays to go slower. I do pull over to make sure those who want to travel faster can pass me easily instead of having 15 to 20 vehicles behind me swearing at me for travelling so slow. Its my pocket that has the extra money in it so why shouldn't I be more courteous?

Thanks Teresa...just rechecked my tires yesterday and did just that...but personally, I wish we could have American's here in the United States forced to ride the transit system we have and put into place, and update it so people would want to save the environment and ride in large numbers instead of one or two people...I guess one could only wish for those days of just riding bikes, but we have become a race of distruction and pleasure also GREED. Great Article, I have printed it out for my friends.

I am glad it helped.

I used to have a business of cars and since long time ago I do this. I learn about saving gas this way and also a very important thing: When you are in the highway your tires have better stability this way and your car reacts to the curves much better.
