Climate taxes, not cap and trade markets alone, will lead to the vast technological changes the world's energy system needs to fight global warming, a top U.S. economist reports today.

And, from article:

A straight carbon tax on energy production -- at an oil wellhead or refinery for instance -- would be simpler and cheaper than putting a cap on tens of thousands of polluters, Jeffrey Sachs, a special advisor to the U.N. secretary general and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University told a panel on Thursday.

As the world prepares to form a successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol by the end of next year, focus is sharpening on how well cap and trade markets are fighting emissions.

Carbon taxes would quickly cut emissions across all sectors of the economy, including vehicles and manufacturing, said Sachs. It could also be more efficient than spreading the trade of permits across the financial system.

A good, worthwhile tax I can live with. Thank you, Kat.

Thank you, Ann...that was really sweet. I agree that so many of the articles posted recently have had to do with very depressing and worrisome issues. Probably some of the worst in our lifetimes. I only hope all will stay strong - like our parents, grandparents did, and we do get through it. We do have to dig in, live more simply and help our fellow man more. It's really only then that there will ever be any personal reward & comfort felt.

How will the elderly, disabled and poor be able to afford more taxes? How or will those is cold climates survive the winter when they can't afford to pay for heat? Now, if Jeffrey Sachs is planning on exempting those in this country who are already living thousands of dollars below the poverty level and funnel some of the monies their way so that they don't have to choose each month whether to buy food, heat or medicine that would be fine. But, Sachs already has plans for those monies. He is an avid supported of the Global Poverty Act. Let's support the rest of the world and let grandma and grandpa die.

Carol...This tax is not for private citizens. It's for refineries and producers of carbon and fuel.

Do you really believe that these taxes will not be passed through to the consumer? If a business has to pay x number of cents (or dollars) more to produce the product you can bet that they will raise the price of the product to compensate.

Carbon tax is not the sollution! Billions of people cannot afford to pay this tax and you do not think that EXXON will cut his profit do you? Get away from oil find clean energy...

Lomborg, “if we are to find a workable and economically smart solution, we would do well to look at the best climate solution from the top economists from the Copenhagen Consensus. They found that, unlike even moderate CO2 cuts, which cost more than they do good should focus on investing in finding cheaper low-carbon energy. This requires us to invest massively in energy research and development (R&D). Right now, we don’t – because the climate panic makes us focus exclusively on cutting CO2.”

A carbon tax is an environmental tax on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. It is an example of a pollution tax.

Carbon atoms are present in every fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas) and are released as CO2 when they are burnt. In contrast, non-combustion energy sources — wind, sunlight, hydropower, and nuclear — do not convert hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide. Accordingly, a carbon tax is effectively a tax on the use of fossil fuels, and only fossil fuels. Some schemes also include other greenhouse gases; the global warming potential is an internationally accepted scale of equivalence for other greenhouse gases in units of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

be cool and smell well and be healthy wealthy always!!

You are right Hans! We are already being taxed to death(don't forget the inflation tax)! This is only a front for the NWO to enslave us further and it will in fact do NOTHING to improve the environment! Don't forget we exhale carbon dioxide! Lets develop alternative energy, get off of fossil fuels and focus on REAL, PROVABLE environmental threats like Genetic Modification(notice nobody is addressing that issue even though its implications are far worse than carbon dioxide)! This is all about making the poor even poorer and the rich even richer!

UNTIL THEY STOP DEFORESTATION AND CLEARING OF RAIN FOREST WE WILL HAVE GLOBAL WARMING THE OZONE HOLE IS SO HUGE NOW THEY WONT EVEN MENTION IT. THE CARS ON THE ROAD ARE SMALL EMITTERS COMPARED TO POWER PLANTS COAL AND OIL BURNING ONES, AND NOT RECYCLING WASTE INTO USABLE MATERIALS. THE HUGE FACTORIES WE HAVE SENT OVERSEAS SMOKING 24/7 AND THE PLANES IN OUR SKY NOT TO MENTION THE DAMN CHEMTRAILS. THEY WERE PUTTING THEM UP ABOUVE MY PLACE 7 MILES FROM AUSTIN YESTERDAY AND I GOT BURNT EYES AND SWOLLEN NOSE NOT ABBLE TO GET AIR THRU NOSR AND BURNING ON MY LEGS AND I WAS ONLY OUT SIDE WHILE THEY SPRAYED FOR 10 MINUTES GETTING THE CAR WINDOW UP WITH PLASTIC WE ARE DOMMED TO THIS WARFARE IN THE SKIES AND WHRN I ASK PEOPLE ABOUT CHEM TRAILS 70% HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT . WE REALLY NEED TO GET AN EDUCATION GOING YOU CAN SEND THEM TO HARP.COM CHRIS RYAN

You poor saps. The country has just been stolen from you, and you ask for more taxation to stop something that stopped happening 10 years ago.

Summary: In recent years the powerhouse
bank Goldman Sachs has supplied Treasury
secretaries to both Republican and Democratic
administrations. A Goldman veteran
serves as President Bush’s chief of staff, while
one runs the New York Stock Exchange and
another lives in the New Jersey governor’s
mansion. Its politics skew left, and as the
company’s competitors on Wall Street go belly
up, Goldman, a friend of Big Government,
remains profi table and its infl uence grows.

Gore's daughter married into the family that controls Goldman Sachs . Goldman Sachs plans to be the biggest "carbon trader" in the world.

Such wonderful coinkydinks!

The real economy is being liquidated and you won't have any money to pay carbon taxes.

Because fossil fuels are still so cheap, the only sure way to force abandonment of them in a timely fashion is for governments to tax them and then funnel that money into research for alternative energy sources. If we wait until the fossil fuels became scarce before we act, it will be too late, because they will aleady be too expensive, the structure for mass production and use of alternative sources will be lacking, and we won't have the money to start the process of transforming our economies to replace the fossil fuels with the alternative sources.

"You poor saps. The country has just been stolen from you, and you ask for more taxation to stop something that stopped happening 10 years ago."

Still parroting the BIG LIE that global warming stopped in 1998, eh?

"Gore's daughter married into the family that controls Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs plans to be the biggest "carbon trader" in the world."

So Gore is doing all his advocacy work for his daughter? Actually, he has three, you know! And it doesn't prove that what's going on is a willful scam. Actually, what Judy calls a scam is what I think is the right thing to do. It's only a "scam" to her because she is incapable of having a long range view, basing her assumptions only on short-term events of today.

Ok, Judy....that really wasn't necessary, and certainly spoiled an intelligent conversation that was actually teaching some of us a lot more on the subject. Extreme rants are never going to get your point across, it only stops the knowledge.......

Gee, I wonder where all those quotes came from. You'd think that Al Gore and others would be smarter than to openly admit they were scam artists or promoting Communism! Maybe that's Judy's point, to make them look dumb.....but if there WERE dumb, they couldn't pull off any scams!
