Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is driving the destruction of Indonesian rainforests for toilet paper. US retailers that are selling APP's "Paseo" tissue products are fueling deforestation in the Indonesian rainforest.

It is frightening to think how much habitat is being converted into products whose actual useful life is very short, and is immediately destined for the landfills and sewers.

Not only do they destroy the rain forest, but by clearning it out, it causes errosion and destroys what is left of the land. They also burn, which pollutes the air, not only in INdonesia, but also other countries. And all for the power and greed of just a few. Perhaps these guys are republicans, cause it seems so.

Chris. This is hard to accept since I have seen thousands and thousands of acres of Loblolly pines in the US southeast grown to produce tp only. I have already been alerted to this, to destruction of old growth rain forest for tp. The great forests destroyed for tp has been making the rounds for 4 decades.

The video adds to the urgency of this subject.
To see the devastation of a Rain Forest's destruction
is overwhelming. Knowing that these particular animals
will discontinue to exist should have an impact on the
toilet paper you buy.

Thank you Chris

Will stay vigilant.

Thanks Chris. I signed through RAN I think. We all must remember that many more consumers are consuming. So more toilet and other paper is going to wipe our bottoms, noses, faces, floors and etc.'s.

WWF says they have contacted the 20 U.S. grocery chains who they believe to be the largest retailers of Paseo products, in an effort to convince them to discontinue sales.

Eight retailers -- including Kmart, Kroger and SUPERVALU -- have recently agreed to stop selling paper products made from APP fiber. The other 12, listed below, "did not respond or commit to stopping Paseo sales," according to WWF.

The CEO of Oasis Brands, which owns Paseo and Livi, said in a recent letter, "Continuous, rigorous auditing has proven APP products are made from sustainable sources and meet well-established sustainability standards."

In 2011, toymaker Mattel announced that it would no longer package Barbie dolls with paper products made by APP. An APP spokesperson said in response, "Asia Pulp and Paper applauds Mattel's commitments to recycling, wood, legality, protection of High Conservation Value Forest, respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and robust auditing and certification procedures. These principles very much mirror APP's philosophy and environmental commitments and we are delighted to see a major global toy manufacturer adopt the same."

Thanks Chris

Noted and petition signed on Orangutans group. I only buy TP made from 100% recycled paper. There was an article just recently on Canadian TV about how the Irving corp. in East. Canada sells a lot of T{ with a logo on it saying that it was from sustainable forests, Many people just bought this believing they were supporting sustainable forests, but investigation showed that Irving was clearcutting forests and replanting them with just 1 species, destroying the biodiversity of the clearcut forest. Hardly sustainable. I also remember a few years ago seeing an article stating that many people wouldn't buy TP that said made from recycled paper because they thought it meant that old, used toilet paper had been used to make the TP labelled "made from 100% recycled paper" :) :) :)

It's really a shame that we can't get more places to plant new trees for the ones they cut down, and to try to use trees planted for harvest rather than older trees as their resources for such things. We need to find ways to encourage better methods.
