Always pretty surprising when a mother kills her own child, but perhaps it shouldn't be. It is not at all uncommon for a postpartum severe depression mother to want to kill her child. In many countries, in the not too distant past, it was not considered as serious as murder if done in the first year of life. (U.K. was one)

A terrible blot on Dane County's Child Welfare Services though. You would think that with all the past cases here in the U.S. that medical personell as well as child welfare workers would not have allowed the infant to return home with the mother until she received psychiatric help. (Not even with other people around.)

Postpartum depression can be very serious...I only wish people could see and have them get help or at least take care of their childern if they cannot cope. I don't think people realize what it is like to have it unless they experienced it themselves. The Andrea Yates case was very big here...

In this case...It doesn't mention postpartum....and she didn't harm her older child....So, I am not sure what to think...It just makes me sooooo upset that a child would have to suffer so much before dying....Why child services gave the child back is beyond me. Plus, WHY did she take the baby back...or not just give her up for adoption...

Even if she does end up being diagnoised w/postpartum...she could of gotten some help or made an effort to...and it mentioned her living w/her in-laws - I'm not sure if it was at the time of the childs death or not...but if it is true...then they are also to fault....how could they not help either of them?

Update:
A Madison mother of two who is accused of killing her 6-week-old daughter allegedly told police she "only has enough love" for one of them, although she doesn't understand why that's the case.

That poor ,poor child. It hurt just to read the article.
Yes, the Mother abused and murdered the child, but Child Welfare and the Hospital Staff failed miserably in protecting the child after seeing obvious signs of abuse.
We as a society need to understand postpartum depression, and that motherhood is not a required state and if you find yourself in that state and do not like it, there is no shame in gathering up that child and taking it to the nearnest hospital, police station, church or even a neighbor you can trust and saying "No more."
Just because one has a uterus doesn't mean you are required to bring children into the world. We romanticise pregnancy and children without admiting it is a hard and long-term undertaking and that we should take a hard long look and 'think' about what we are about to undertake.

I agree, that the system failed miserably. Another little angel gone from neglect.

This has to be the most sickening thing I have ever read. No mention of post-partum depression - wouldn't
it have extended to the other child as well? Or not - I don't know. It is possible, wtih her being an immigrant, she was not aware of the condition or treatment available. That said, it really doesn't sound like this was the case. This just sounds like pure evil - this woman surely has a serious mental problem. I cannot imagine the system letting this fall through the cracks - it seems so obvious that this was a very dangerous situation for any child.
I pray this woman isn't released later to repeat this.
Heartbreaking, disgusting, apalling - there are no words to properly describe this one.
What is it going to take to protect these children?

I totalie i agree with what everyone here is saying about proteacting our kids from abuse, They are a gift from god and they are little angels, so why do they keep letting this happen and what is going to take to stop this woman from killing there kids, It just sickens me to hear of another child being abused and killed, and the cps should not have given that child back to her with out her getting some kinda help,I my self have three kids and not once did i ever think of abuseing them i love them sooooooo much so i can't under stand why this woman have to kill them why does'nt the cps step in and take them away from them at the first site of the abuse, and not give them back with out them getting some help.My ex use to abuse my kids but when they were very young i took them and came to texas and they had a very very good life here and they were so happy to get away from there dad, i new if i did'nt get them out of there that he would kill them and me, and it was the best thing that i ever did is to get them away from him. So wake up cps and do something about the little angels out there that are being abused or killed by there parents.
