Today I saw a picture of a weeping Palestinian man holding a plastic carrier bag of meat. It was his son. He'd been shredded (the hospital's word) by an Israeli missile attack - apparently using their fab new weapon, flechette bombs.

Brian Eno's letter to America: WHY? I just don't get it

Brian Eno is an artist, musical innovator, record producer for artists ranging from David Bowie to U2 and Coldplay. He has been a consistent supporter of Stop the War Coalition since it was first founded.

Dear All of You:

I sense I'm breaking an unspoken rule with this letter, but I can't keep quiet any more.

Today I saw a picture of a weeping Palestinian man holding a plastic carrier bag of meat. It was his son. He'd been shredded (the hospital's word) by an Israeli missile attack - apparently using their fab new weapon, flechette bombs. You probably know what those are - hundreds of small steel darts packed around explosive which tear the flesh off humans. The boy was Mohammed Khalaf al-Nawasra. He was 4 years old.

I suddenly found myself thinking that it could have been one of my kids in that bag, and that thought upset me more than anything has for a long time.

Then I read that the UN had said that Israel might be guilty of war crimes in Gaza, and they wanted to launch a commission into that. America won't sign up to it.

What is going on in America? I know from my own experience how slanted your news is, and how little you get to hear about the other side of this story. But - for Christ's sake! - it's not that hard to find out. Why does America continue its blind support of this one-sided exercise in ethnic cleansing? WHY? I just don't get it. I really hate to think its just the power of AIPAC… for if that's the case, then your government really is fundamentally corrupt. No, I don't think that's the reason… but I have no idea what it could be.

The America I know and like is compassionate, broadminded, creative, eclectic, tolerant and generous. You, my close American friends, symbolise those things for me. But which America is backing this horrible one-sided colonialist war? I can't work it out: I know you're not the only people like you, so how come all those voices aren't heard or registered?

How come it isn't your spirit that most of the world now thinks of when it hears the word 'America'? How bad does it look when the one country which more than any other grounds its identity in notions of Liberty and Democracy then goes and puts its money exactly where its mouth isn't and supports a ragingly racist theocracy?

I was in Israel last year with Mary. Her sister works for UNWRA in Jerusalem. Showing us round were a Palestinian - Shadi, who is her sister's husband and a professional guide - and Oren Jacobovitch, an Israeli Jew, an ex-major from the IDF who left the service under a cloud for refusing to beat up Palestinians. Between the two of them we got to see some harrowing things - Palestinian houses hemmed in by wire mesh and boards to prevent settlers throwing shit and piss and used sanitary towels at the inhabitants; Palestinian kids on their way to school being beaten by Israeli kids with baseball bats to parental applause and laughter; a whole village evicted and living in caves while three settler families moved onto their land; an Israeli settlement on top of a hill diverting its sewage directly down onto Palestinian farmland below; The Wall; the checkpoints… and all the endless daily humiliations. I kept thinking, "Do Americans really condone this? Do they really think this is OK? Or do they just not know about it?".

As for the Peace Process: Israel wants the Process but not the Peace. While 'the process' is going on the settlers continue grabbing land and building their settlements… and then when the Palestinians finally erupt with their pathetic fireworks they get hammered and shredded with state-of-the-art missiles and depleted uranium shells because Israel 'has a right to defend itself' ( whereas Palestine clearly doesn't). And the settler militias are always happy to lend a fist or rip up someone's olive grove while the army looks the other way.

By the way, most of them are not ethnic Israelis - they're 'right of return' Jews from Russia and Ukraine and Moravia and South Africa and Brooklyn who came to Israel recently with the notion that they had an inviolable (God-given!) right to the land, and that 'Arab' equates with 'vermin' - straightforward old-school racism delivered with the same arrogant, shameless swagger that the good ole boys of Louisiana used to affect. That is the culture our taxes are defending. It's like sending money to the Klan.

But beyond this, what really troubles me is the bigger picture. Like it or not, in the eyes of most of the world, America represents 'The West'. So it is The West that is seen as supporting this war, despite all our high-handed talk about morality and democracy. I fear that all the civilisational achievements of The Enlightenment and Western Culture are being discredited - to the great glee of the mad Mullahs - by this flagrant hypocrisy. The war has no moral justification that I can see - but it doesn't even have any pragmatic value either. It doesn't make Kissingerian 'Realpolitik' sense; it just makes us look bad.

I'm sorry to burden you all with this. I know you're busy and in varying degrees allergic to politics, but this is beyond politics. It's us squandering the civilisational capital that we've built over generations. None of the questions in this letter are rhetorical: I really don't get it and I wish that I did.

An excellent letter - I wish we could let this man know that not ALL Americans support this war and many are in fact, very much against it. I wish Israel and Palestine would have enough of the bloodshed and come to terms with peace. I wish all the world would scream loud enough and long enough to force Israel and Palestine to make peace.

And on the Israeli side - ZERO children killed ...
Hamas doesn't have flechette bombs - even Regev won't get away with saying "I don't know, you don't know, this could have been a Hamas bomb" ......

And are some of those heartless apologists going to suggest that this was a human shield used by Hamas?
As they tend to say about all these children whose lives have been lost?

Yes, people in Gaza, the families will call such children "martyrs" - how else can they name their deaths? Martyrs are victims to a greater power's killing actions. Some of the martyrs of Christian history sought martyrdom - most had it forced upon them - because they denied the killers the right to force them to deny their identity, their values, what made them who they were.
And the people of Gaza refuse to give up their identity as Gazans, as Palestinians (be they Christian, Muslim or other). They refuse to deny their rights - even if others are denying these same rights: their family lands, their trees, their culture .... their pride & personal dignity. They resist, they refuse to flee (for most, that would be "flee AGAIN" ) - to where? To what? .. to lose what little dignity they have been left. So they stand firm, the more they suffer from missiles, shells, bombs, bullets - the more their determination to resist is reinforced. Because if they flee, all those civilians, all those children - and yes, those militia - who have died will have died for nothing.

War is terrible, oppression is criminal. Supporting oppression with restocking arms is criminal, too -- whichever side, but if you compare comparative need & comparative power, the suppliers of the mountains should be thinking twice .... except, of course, not only is AIPAC pushing, but also the arms industries who get both testing of new arms and fat payments when Israel's arms are restocked ....

Brian Eno speaks for me ... he asks questions that tear at me, he underlines realities that I can't understand how any sensitive person can dismiss ...

Thanks for posting

Thx for posting Eleonora and thx to Brian Eno for his wonderful honest and heartfelt letter! Only I wonder WHO will read it, wish it would have been published in the news media. But he might as well get used to the idea of that govt -and others-actually being "fundamentally corrupt", sold to the MIC and the worldwide Zionist elite.

Many of the videos that were coming out concerning Gaza were off limits to my viewing here in the USA. But I do know enough was coming out to let Americans know that many children were being killed. One had to have their head under a rock not to know this.

Now I like to clarify, there are TWO America's.......the ones that placate to the 1%, the military contractors, those who make a lot of money on keeping weapons supplied somewhere and where doesn't seem to matter to them. We have a Government that has been eating crow by the sounds of it by the subtle or not so subtle words of it's leader to our leaders. So, please pretty please stop your fighting while we just vote on sending a lot of more weapons over there.

Our Leadership hasn't agreed to anything lately. It allows our Elders to suffer, our children to suffer, our poor to suffer with no hope in site. It allows our schools to be underfunded, College is becoming only a dream to a lot of what use to be former Middle Class, and our infrastructure is crumbling. Our leadership can't even send some money to feed and help the children at our southern border but it can agree to send lot of weapons to Israel to kill someone else's children.

The American people are beaten down, ignored, dismissed, no matter what the issue is, including getting help for their most desperate. For the first time hospitals are receiving children who are not only malnourished in a so called richest Country in the world, but children who are starving. Yup, starvation in America. Do you think our so called Leaders are listening to us? Caring about us? Hell no.

So they don't listen to us who cry out against this tragedy that kept unfolding day by day. Now they are on a new vacation. They have more vacations than anyone I know. When they are in DC they are on vacation as nothing gets done and if the American people send more do nothing to help anyone in DC then we'll keep on this way. Nothing that is getting down is constructive only destructive. Bombs, are destructive. You want new planes, bombs, bullets, we got plenty........and if the American people cry foul they have learned just ignore us or starve us or forbid us to have medical care, eventually we'll shut up, tire, or die.

No, don't look to America for any constructive help.......those who would like to give it can't and those who can will not.

In the meantime all I can do is say I'm sorry, what horror those people suffer, and so I keep speaking out to my Do Nothing Representatives, and try to let others know in my humble way what is going on. Maybe enough of a change eventually will take place over here, but I don't see it tomorrow, I just hope to see it before I die. That we've rid ourselves of this Heartless mess we got over here. My tears will never be enough to ease that man and the pain he suffers.

A will never look at a plastic bag the same!!
And no children killed in Israel - that is as it should be.
No children should be killed anywhere!!!!!!!!!
No innocents should be killed, period.
These are netanyahu/IDF MURDERS - hundreds of maimed and mutilated civilians, men, women and children, struck down by israeli shelling and bombs - not Hamas.
The lies put out by IDF AND israeli press and govt are to hide the truth - to cover their real purpose, ethnic cleansing of Palestine and incursion into Gaza for control of natural resources, offshore gas, and land annexation/theft.
Beware, of what you read. The Naziz spread rabid propaganda like the Israeli war machine/netanyahu apologists.
These are violations of the Laws of War and war crimes. They must be denounced. AMERICANS MUST KNOW THAT THESE ATROCITIES ARE BEING DONE WITH THEIR TAX DOLLARS. U.S. military aid to Israel has funded Israeli crimes against humanity, for decades- billions.
Zionist Israel and it's supporters do not want this to come out and do everything to shut dwn and silence the truth, as other autocratic despots have done.
This barbarism must be denounced and the Israeli government/IDF narrative, lies and fabrications.
Speak out against Israeli oppression and tyranny, the ongoing, decades long, illegal occupation of Palestine, land thefts and illegal settlements, the outrageous Israeli blockade on Gaza, and the Israeli massacres, now.

I am hoping that the ceasefire will bring about some sanity on both sides of this ghastly war. And like many of the Americans I cannot understand why the U S government ignores all of the chaos & killing of innocents.

Absolutely sickening - in more ways than one. This is why I recently took part in a rally for Palestine. If any other country was inflicting atrocities like this, we would be on them like ugly on a bulldog. But because it's the Sacred Cow of the Middle East, they can get away with anything they damned well please. All they have to do is play the Holocaust card.

The more ZioNazists kill the faster they build hatred and anger not only in the hearts of Palestinians,Arabs or Muslim but among most human beings who may think that their turn may come soon, ZioNazists are expanding all over the world. If they aren't stopped today, ALL human beings will suffer and regret the day they gave blind eyes to the crimes committed by the so called " Israel "

Wise words Abdessalam and if anything their harsh words have driven me to seek the truth. I will admit I was in fact ignorant of many things over there, however, I've NEVER been ignorant of the slaughter of innocent women and their children. That fact alone, whether people understand about what you write on ZioNazists should be of a wake up call to them. I'm learning more all the time.....I'm making it a point to. For years I've had to teach those who are lacking in knowledge about the ongoing suffering of the American Indians, so my time was deeply in that. This I still do, as people still don't know what is happening and going on, they too were lied about, called savages. I see a lot of similarities to what is happening and happened to the people in Palestine to the American Indian. It isn't taking me long to connect the dots.
