Help Free Moroccan Rape Victimsfrom Having to Choose Between Marriage to the Perp., or Suicide-PLEASE SIGN!

A Moroccan law allows a rapist to avoid prosecution: if he marries his victim. This puts women, and girls, in a terrible bind. There is a vote coming up in Morocco, regarding this law, which we may have a chance to impact.

This may be a rare opportunity to help improve the lives of women in Morocco, perhaps elsewhere, by extension, now and into the future.

When is there going to be an Arab League Human Rights Statement? They need to be hammered on these issues until they decide to join the 21st Century with the rest of us. Treating women like chattel, or property, is caveman logic, & these troglodytes need to be dragged into the present, even if they're kicking & screaming, their religious sensibilities be damned. No religion should be allowed to enact laws that take away basic human rights, & not having to marry your rapist I would think should be right up there at the top of the list.

It is just beyond imagining that in this time so much of the world turns a blind (deaf and dumb too) eye to the horrific conditions under which women and girls live is so many parts of the world. How is this NOT the business of the United Nations? Is it only if bombs fall that people care about other people's plight? It isn't enough to wring our collective hands at things like this because "it is their culture" or "it is their religion". Human rights are the business of every person and every country on the planet, tradition, culture, religion be damned. PEOPLE come first, your pathetic excuses for harming each other, particularly the weak, the infirm, the elderly, minorities, those of other religions, and women and girls everywhere, hold no water and ought be attacked from every angle possible all of the time, until this flipping world becomes a civilized place. Nothing less is acceptable nor should it be. Silence is consent and I do not consent nor do I understand why anyone, any country does. Look the other way is NOT a policy, it is an abdication of our responsibility as human beings to care for each other. Nothing less will ever work until we all say a collective NO to these serial killing abusers.

I don't believe for one minute that this petition will carry any influence.....but I signed it, partly to assuage my anger at the way this culture treats women.

Signed yesterday, but I was able to sign again w/o the usual message Avaaz gives if you've already signed.

This is a very important petition, and I was glad to see the signatures from around the world rolling in.

Thanks for taking action!
Thanks for sending a message!

The more people sign and flood the minister with messages, the stronger our call becomes.

Thanks Mitch !

AniMaeChi, that is a heart warming kind of response you have told us about.
Gene,, what can I say other than "You Rock!"
Regan, an Arab League Human Rights Statement sounds like a wonderful idea,, sadly, also, right now it sounds like an oxymoron, as well. Troglodytes indeed!!

Apparently, various cultures and their systems, like Morocco's, are either not interested in justice, or see it very differently than we do. I am guessing that this is what can happen when cultures get "frozen in time," like in the 12th century.
I think ours, too, is stuck, much of it in the 18th, or 19th century.
