Australia puts oil profits above the EPBC Act by auctioning off protected water habitats for drilling.

"How is the government afforded the latitude to make such a statement and intonate that further damage to the whales is out of their control? The government is responsible for allowing Shell to drill for oil in habitats critical to the endangered Blue Whale." Indeed!

We need more people to vote for the Greens!!! Here in Oz and everywhere else!!!

Under the EPBC Act, all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) are protected in Australian waters. The Australian Whale Sanctuary includes all Commonwealth waters from the three nautical mile state waters limit out to the boundary of the Exclusive Economic Zone (i.e. out to 200 nautical miles and further in some places). It is an offence to injure, take, trade, keep, move, harass, chase, herd, tag, mark or brand a cetacean in the Australian Whale Sanctuary without a permit.

So, Shell had to have a permit and got one, apparently, which is, as Sandi said, shameful.

Sadly noted, Whales are not owned commodities, they are wonderous & amazing creatures that are a gift to us & the planet. I am just utterly disgusted with the greed & disrespect that perpetuates the destruction of the whales & their habittats! Thanks for posting Deb, & as always signed all pertaining petitions.

Well then it looks like Australia is the kissing cousin of Japan. Boy, they're making a lot of enemies lately. And the oil companies are absolute demons.

Seem like Shell Oil is dead set on covering the planet with oil spills. First the Arctic, where there is no way to clean a spill, that they know of. The XL Keystone pipeline, and now this. Look up Shell Oil safety and spill record. It's the worst record for spills in the oil industry. The impact on the environment is already showing up in the Gulf of Mexico from BP's spill, with shrimp and fish full of sores and no eyes, including eye sockets. But "it's Ok the eat," according to the FDA. Shame on Australia.
