Thank you for this very important article ! All petitons previously or signed today. Although it's not the Pacific ocean, for me it was a shocking microcosm of nonbiogradable garbage in the oceans. When the winds are particularly high, the next day at the LA River, there are hundreds and hundreds ( I do not lie) of plastic bags littering the trees and marsh grassess all along the river for miles. It's absolutely horrid ! Why aren't more people horrified by all this? ! Why aren't all people in our governments horrified by this ? ! You said it Deb !
" Ironically, with their destruction so befalls the equivalent outcome for humankind. This begs the question, why are people engaging in a war with nature for the perception of human survival when it results in the demise of their species." Yes !

What an utterly horrifying but symbolic photo. The tag line had me confused....I was ready to fight with my boxing gloves on! I get the play on words now.

Constance, my friend, I live in L.A. County, and the lack of oversight given to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is mind blowing. When you go to a city like Victoria, BC Canada, there are recycling bins lining the streets: a no brainer, right? The battle is getting people to use them, but for God's sake, give them something to work with. It's mind blowing.

We're party to a certain self-inflicted suicide here on planet earth. The death knell of the planet gets sounded over and over and over again and only a small minority are listening. I used to think it would be long and slow, but in my lifetime, I'm already seeing it. It's devastating. Greed, corruption, an overall lack of moral fiber and true comittment to preserving Mother Gaia. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Off my soapbox now for a minute or two.

Noted! Perhaps an extremely high penalty can be paid by all cruise lines as they are the most responsible for the trash that is dumped at see. I just say have them pay an outlandish surcharge that can not be passed onto the passengers as this will hit them in the pocket book . These ship are becoming floating nations as they have been built so large. You would think that they could certainly build a sewage as well as useless trash/waste disposal containment that can be emptied at each port of call!

Noted and signed, of course. Spreading awareness of this is important, since people need to realize what consequences it has.

There remain quite a lot of people who lack environmental consciousness, or so it seems. At grass roots level it is inconspicuous: It may mean, for example, that a salesclerk persistently offers you a plastic bag despite seeing you, a shopper, carry a cloth bag. I always do, despite of which this happens to me every single time I enter certain stores, which truly peeves me. It has yet to dawn on them why I keep on saying 'no'. They do it automatically, without thinking - yes, without thinking - alas. This may seem like a trivial thing, but the way it usually is that small things, as they accumulate, turn into big, unsurmountable ones in the course of time, and the result is not nice...
