A rescue nine years in the making...

Greetings!
They say that good things come to those who wait. Well, we waited and we worked. For nine years we have done whatever we could to work towards saving Champa, an elephant who touched all of our hearts. Today, we have the best news ever.

She's safe with us now!

It's been an amazing journey with few highs and a lot of lows. Now Champa (aka Jasmine) is finally safe in our care, and those lows are fading memories. We wanted to share this news with you as it is all of you who have made her new life possible.

Let me tell truth...

A owner of Champa was died many years back and this Elephant was declared as per 2003 Notification with CWLW, Haryana. Elephant was injured / sick when she was in Dabchik tourist complex in Hodal, Geeta Seshamani Co-Founders, Wildlife SOS used to visit her for treatment during 1999-2002 and PFA Haryana also doing same job. Later Elephant was declared during 2003 after owner death by grandsons ... claims was not as per rules, rejected by CWLW, Haryana and officials went to rescue after complaint lodged by PFA Haryana with Police Station, Hodal and then notice issued as per section 55 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. So called owner ran away outside Haryana. Tell me something before I go out and send you moneys, arent you able to find funds within your country or is it just easier to ask for these moneys with a cry to all animals lovers the world over, I would like to know what efforts have you made to assure the care of these elephants, its easy to ask for a hand out.

Believe me I am a wildlife activist and I do care immensly but we do have animals that are in need of care to...so persuade me

I honestly don't quite understand what exactly you're accusing Wildlife SOS of. What you have posted doesn't make logical sense, and it's impossible to judge who is in the right. Could you please reply with a simple summary of your accusations? Are you saying that Champa died in a zoo? That she was never rescued? Or what? I would like to understand, but I am not able to decipher what you've said so far. Thanks.

Despite death of 135 animals since last year, the authority of Kanpur zoo was treating the incidents as normal.

A female elephant died in the zoo yesterday taking the toll to 118 since April last year. But, the zoo authority refuses to take responsibility for the deaths.

The elephant named 'Champa', who died yesterday, had been suffering from a disease "Pododerma" and the zoo doctors had been treating her, zoo director K Praveen Rao told PTI.

Asked about reasons for deaths of the animals, Rao said most of it were due to natural causes.

In January 2010, 27 animals died due to extreme cold, among which on a single day alone 17 cocktail birds had perished.

The zoo director denied report of negligence of animals and said the animals were provided proper feed and health care.
Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat kicked up a controversy in Nagpur after a video of him entering a tiger cub's cage was made public.

The video footage shows Thorat entering the cage in Nagpur zoo in the presence of the tiger's trainer.

Thorat, who is also the Guardian Minister of Nagpur, blatantly ignored zoo rules by entering the cage along with eight to 10 people. This despite the fact that a tiger cub had recently died due to infection.

"Actually Balasaheb Thorat is the Guardian Minister of Nagpur, so when he was told about the tiger cub's condition he went to check the status. His love, affection for wildlife is well-known. Just because he touched the tiger doesn't mean he did anything wrong. I don't have all the details, my department is trying to find out. We will initiate an Inquiry if required. But the zoo doesn't even come under my purview. It's under the Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction, their staff look after the zoo," said Babanrao Pachpute, Maharashtra Forest Minister.

But environmentalists are up in arms against the Minister's actions and have asked for an explanation.

Only authorised and trained personnel are allowed to enter the cages under controlled conditions.

Section 38J of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 states that no person shall tease or cause disturbance to animals in a zoo. Many say that the minister's act amounts to teasing.
Naresh Kadyan, representative of the International Organization for Animal Protection - OIPA in India / founder chairman of the People for Animals (PFA) Haryana lodged complaint with the Commissioner of Nagpur Police bearing No. 1250490121740 against the Agriculture Minister of Maharashtra Balasaheb Thorat for the violation of the section 38(J) of the Indian Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 read with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

The Nagpur police on Monday booked two officials of the Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), which manages the Maharajbaug zoo, in connection with the deaths of two deer and three emus. The Sitabuldi police, under whose jurisdiction the zoo falls, booked zoo in-charge Dr Abhijit Motghare and zoo controller and associate PDKV dean Dr Vandan Mohod under sections of the wildlife protection Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Animal rights activist Karishma Galani said that the death toll could be higher and a thorough count of the zoo animals was needed. It was on her complaint that the police booked the zoo officials. The PDKV management on Monday transferred Motghare to its dairy department and replaced him with previous zoo in-charge Dr SS Bawaskar. On Tuesday, university seniors rushed to Nagpur from their headquarters in Akola and began an internal probe. Last Thursday, the zoo authorities, under orders from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), began shifting nine ailing deer to the Navegaon national park in Gondia. Violating guidelines, the animals were stuffed in plywood boxes. A fawn (young deer) died while being stuffed into the box. Its carcass was allegedly buried on the zoo premises along with that of an emu, which had also died of unknown reasons in its cage. Later when the police recovered their bodies, the emu was learnt to have been suffering from a disease. The fawn had plastic in its intestine. Of the remaining eight deer, authorities released three fawns back in their enclosure and dispatched five deer to the national park. One more deer died on the way, of shock. Moreover, authorities at the national park refused to accept the animals in the absence of a transit pass which Motghare had not arranged for.

The CZA has not been happy with the upkeep of the zoo, which keeps animals in enclosures instead of in open spaces. The zoo got an extension on its permit till April 2011, but the CZA has been asking authorities to shift its animals to bigger zoos.
These are some questions, which remain unanswered, hence the International Organization for Animal Protection in India needs following information under RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT, 2005 and de-recognition of zoo if approved by the CZA.

* How sale purchase of elephants are going on in India and who sold out elephants at present in Hodal - Haryana and why in Sonpur - Bihar?

* Why wildlife crime cases are not yet been shifted from Gurgaon and Sirsa to Special Environment Court at Faridabad - Kurukshetra ?

* Why CWLW Haryana - SHO, Police Station, Hasanpur in Palwal failed to book peacock poachers?

* Why CWLW Rajasthan failed to book elephants abuser who used iron ankush during marriage funcion at Hotel Raj Mehal, Jaipur? .ZEE News telecast event on 19-8-2010.

* CWLW Haryana and UP failed to rescue the injured female elephants from Dabchik - Hodal - Country in resort , Kosi in UP, why?
Champa female elephants missing from Haryana, which was in Dabchik then found in County In resort Kosi Kalan, PFA Haryana issued notices as per section 55 of WP Act, 1972.

* Why whistle blower Naresh Kadyan booked in Nawab Pataudi black buck poaching case, where as he did his fundamental duties, FIR against him be canceled at once with apology, Padam Shri be awarded to him. Why Soha Ali Khan and officials involved are not yet punished for wrong arms license and appeal not yet decided b he Gurgaon Commissioner?

* What action taken against Balasaheb Thorat for the violation of the section 38(J) of the Indian Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 read with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, if not yet taken then why it is so. ........1250490121740

* Whether zoo recognized by the CZA or not ?

* Why was a mandatory transit pass (TP) not sought by the zoo before shifting the deer.

* Why were the deer packed hurriedly during the night. No vet accompanied the animals to Navegaon, violation of the cattle transport rules, 1978 amended in 2001.

* There were five boxes, but nine deer were stuffed in it. When one animal died, only five were shifted. Who told to do so, IPC 428-429 be imposed on all accused.

* Why Navegoan officials were not informed about the deer. The Navegaon forest officials too are responsible for the mess as they did not register an offence against the zoo for illegal transport of animals, criminal conspiracy against animals read with IPC 120-B.

* From Nagpur it took four hours to reach Navegaon, but while returning it took 12 hours. Why odd-Kamptee Road was chosen instead of Bhandara Road to shift the deer, where are the necessary pre transport permission from AWBI as per section 96-97 of he Cattle transport Rules, 1978 amended in 2001, violation of section 38 of he PCA Act, 1960.

* Return trip delayed to hide deer deaths that occurred midway. The zoo did not allow Police to count remaining deer raising doubts.

* Why Motghare and Mohod did not visit the zoo after the carcasses of emu and deer were seized by police, why exotic birds were in a zoo and who allowed inbreeding over there, when inbreeding was banned in 2009.

* Police role doubtful as despite clear-cut evidence, no arrests made. FIR too was lodged after pressure, not yet imposed 428-429 IPC on accused.

* Till Tuesday, there is no action against the zoo officials.

* Matter be investigated by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, New Delhi

NAGPUR: Amid high drama for the fourth consecutive day over death of two deer while relocating them from Maharajbagh Zoo to Navegaon, the People For Animals (PFA) demanded arrest of associate dean of College of Agriculture Vandan Mohod and zoo in-charge Dr AB Motghare. An FIR has already been filed by the Sitabuldi police.

Mohod, Dr Motghare and Summit Deshmukh, zookeeper, were responsible for two deer deaths on Friday due to alleged negligence while relocating them to Navegaon National Park. Of the two deer one died in transit while one was quietly buried in the zoo. The case was exposed by People For Animals (PFA), Nagpur. The NGO suspects the remaining four deer also must have died.

"We didn't get any cooperation from forest and zoo officials to count the deer. It indicates that they want to hide the facts, " alleged Karishma Galani, chief of PFA, while talking to mediamen on Monday.

Meanwhile, the PDKV, which manages the zoo, has transferred Dr Motghare to dairy department. He will be replaced by earlier in-charge Dr SS Bawaskar. However, it has taken no action against Mohod and zookeeper Summit Deshmukh, who is also his relative.

ER Patil, dean of faculty of agriculture in PDKV, Akola, admitted that Mohod and Deshmukh erred but was non-committal on action against the duo. "The zoo staff was negligent. They should have followed the requisite procedure. The deer relocation could have been delayed by a day or two, " Patil said.

Although Mohod and Dr Motghare were slapped with various sections under Wildlife Protection Act 1972; Recognition of Zoo Rules 2004 and Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, but none was arrested. "Police, forest and zoo officials did not take the matter seriously, " said Manish Singh Chauhan of PFA.

When the PFA members called up Addl CP Anup Kumar Singh in front of media men to ask why action was not taken against Mohod and Dr Motghare, he replied, "Don't teach me law. I cannot assure you about their arrests. I will let you know after the duo are arrested, " Singh said.

The PFA activists alleged that initially police were reluctant to act. "But only after our leader Maneka Gandhi called up commissioner of police, they swung into action, " they said.

In the last two days, police quizzed Dr Motghare and also seized one wooden box in which the deer were shifted. Dr Motghare admitted before the cops that his action was as per the directions issued by his boss Mohod.

PFA activist Arunpal Singh Behal demanded to book the culprits under section 429 of the IPC, which implies killing of wild animals under mischief. He also demanded counting of deer afresh. "Only then we will know how many deer have actually died, " he said.

The PFA threatened to launch hunger strike in front of Maharajbagh Zoo if Mohod and Dr Motghare are not arrested in a day or two.

Dr RC Baisare, assistant commissioner, Regional Disease Investigation Laboratory said that the carcasses of deer and emu were in putrefied condition and hence it cannot be concluded how they died. The deer that was in transit died due to shock and around one kg of plastic polythene bags were found in its stomach.

NAGPUR: Even as two more emu deaths were reported in the Maharajbagh Zoo on Tuesday morning, the Panjabrao Deshmukh Kris...hi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), which manages the zoo, has stripped associate dean of the College of Agriculture Vandan Mohod of t...he charge of zoo controller for the deer relocation mess.

Dr VM Bhale, the registrar of the Akola-based PDKV, said: "From Monday evening ER Patil, the dean of faculty of agriculture, has taken additional charge as zoo controller. Mohod will continue to function as associate dean of the college."

"We have shifted zoo incharge Dr AB Motghare," Dr Bhale said. He was non-committal about a similar action against Mohod and zookeeper Sumeet Deshmukh, who accompanied the vehicle to Navegaon. Incidentally, Deshmukh is Mohod's nephew.

On the two emu deaths, he said the zoo is under threat from pollution. On Amravati Road, many hotel and eateries dump garbage affecting zoo animals and on the other a nullah is still causing a problem. "We are devising a plan to curb pollution," he added.

The emu deaths comes close on the heels of two deer deaths due to negligence. This is the third emu death in the past six days. One emu that died on August 12 was buried quietly by Dr Motghare and the staff without performing post-mortem.

"No steps were taken to find out the exact cause of emu death. Had the post-mortem been done, the two emus that died on Tuesday could perhaps have been saved," claimed Karishma Galani, People for Animal (PFA) leader in Nagpur.

The post-mortem on two emus was performed at the Government Veterinary College. With three emu deaths, the zoo is left with only two emus. The zoo had procured two emus in 2005 for Rs 7,000 from a farm near Malkapur in Buldana district. The pair had bred in the zoo.

Following TOI's report, Naresh Kadyan, representative of International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA) in India and Haryana PFA leader, on Tuesday issued a notice to the chief wildlife warden and state director general of police (DGP) demanding strict action against Mohod and Dr Motghare.

Kadyan has decided to take up the matter with MoEF minister Jairam Ramesh and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). The CZA has also received complaints on deer deaths.

PFA's Manish Singh Chauhan and Karishma Galani reiterated their charge that police was delaying arrest of culprits.

Investigating officer PI P B Thombre denied delay on part of the police. "It is true that crime has been committed but we are collecting supporting evidence so that the case stands in the court. There may be more than two culprits. We are also in touch with the wildlife officials. We have also not received the post-mortem report of the deer," Thombre said.

He recorded the statement of Sumeet Deshmukh, who said as the vehicle encountered a snag, there was a delay in reaching Nagpur.

Interestingly, the vehicle had left Navegaon at 5pm and should have reached Nagpur at 10pm.
