The Homerus swallowtail is the Western Hemisphere's largest butterfly, but University of Florida researchers say its numbers are so small that conservation and captive breeding efforts are needed to save the insect, found only in two parts of Jamaica.

These are the biggest butterflies anywhere and there are not many left. I have seen one of these in the Houston Museum of Natural History Butterfly Section (alive) and they are beautful. Now, if they can figure out a way to stop development and urge that the area these butterflies are in be labelled a conservation area then perhaps they will be safe and not go extinct like so many species these day. Thanks in advance for NOTES & Comments. I love butterflies-they seem to represent freedom and beauty -and in a way peace..if only we humans will leave them in peace.

Let us turn the planet back into a wildlife preserve instead of a parking lot! We need to protect all life - from ourselves. Let us begin with our backyards. Let us practice family planning; I have no children and plan on having one child. Let us eat vegetarian. Let us limit consumption of resources by buying less. Let us drive less.

These beautiful insects need to be protected. Here in South
Africa we rarely see these beautiful creatures with the exception of a small white butterfly once a year when they fly in their hundreds but onlyfor a day.
