The McGuinty government wants to spend billions rebuilding Canada's oldest and most dangerous nuclear station.
The Pickering nuclear station is just 30km from downtown Toronto---closer than any other nuclear station in the world to a major population centre.
Today, nuclear regulatory authorities would not allow a new nuclear plant to be built at Pickering because of its proximity to millions of people. After the Chernobyl disaster a 30km zone around Chernobyl nuclear station had to be permanently evacuated. Roughly 2.5 million people live within 30 km of the Pickering nuclear station.
Greenpeace is calling on the McGuinty government to commit to ramping up the deployment of renewables, to conserving energy and to increasing local generation to replace the Pickering nuclear station when it shuts down in 2014.
It is important to raise concern about Pickering now. On Wednesday in Ajax, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CSNC) will hold a hearing on a request to re-license Pickering B for another five years.
Ontario should not waste billions of dollars to rebuild Canada's most dangerous nuclear station.

Subject Premier McGuinty: Stop building dangerous nuclear power
Premier McGuinty,
I'm writing to ask you to abandon your plans to spend billions rebuilding Pickering B nuclear station and invest instead in safer and cleaner energy sources like renewables, conservation and local generation.
Just 30 km from downtown Toronto, Pickering is the closest nuclear station in the world to a major population centre. Because of the high population density, regulatory authorities would not allow a new plant to be built at Pickering today. Pickering should be shut down, not rebuilt.
I urge your government to shut down the Pickering B reactors permanently when they reach the end of their operational lives in 2014. Invest instead in clean, safe energy options that can replace Pickering by 2014.

You know? With my being an Electrician, it looks to me like it will take Nucs to get us off of coal powered plants. In my mind, if Air Craft Carriers and Subs can be Nuc. powered, we can build small safe ones to power Cities. But this is a very debatable issue.
